Prologue

Harry stared out the window, wrapped in a thick blanket dragged from his bed to protect him from the chill of the castle. Outside it was dark and shadowy, the moon was almost gone but Harry was hoping to get one more glimpse of it before the nights became too dark to make it out and he’d have to wait for the new moon. Nightstalker he called it, and in his imagination the creature was a noble solitary hunter, glorying in his own power and freedom. Free from the cares and expectations of others, to go where it willed without incurring anyone’s disapproval or worse, disappointment.

Distracted by his thoughts Harry nearly missed the brief flash of movement as the black on black shape flickered between the trees on the edge of the forbidden forest. He held his breath in anticipation, hoping that this would be one of the rare times when Nightstalker would show himself completely. Since Harry had first glimpsed the panther several months ago at the beginning of term it had become a symbol of hope for him, of all that was good and incorrupt in the world, a piece of beauty that Voldemort would never destroy. Whether he, Harry Potter, succeeded in destroying the dark wizard or not, Nightstalker would go on as before, unknowing and uncaring of the plight of humanity. It was refreshing and somehow reassuring to know that this creature, at least, did not depend on him for its life or happiness.

Harry sighed as the long, lithe body slid gracefully back between the trees. For just a second he had caught a glimpse of its full sinewy form, indistinct against the darkness of the forest but breathtaking nonetheless. It had occurred to Harry briefly that the panther was not native to this area, but he didn’t know or care how this one had come to be here; after all this was Hogwarts and much stranger things happened on its grounds than the presence of an un-magical, if foreign, creature. Heart lighter then before he struggled back to bed to get some sleep before the double of potions he had to sit through the next morning.
