Broken Covenant
Disclaimer:JK ROWLING IS OWNS THE POTTERVERSE. This started off as a one-shot, but the plotbunnies have minds of their own. This is an extremely AU fic. You have been warned.
Seventeen year old Lily Evans was Head Girl of Gryffindor, a mastermind at potions, and transfigurations, and anything else she attempted. She was, in short, the smartest witch of her generation. Her sweet nature and her sharp mind were only amplified by her graceful physicality, and her natural beauty. She had captivated a pureblood from her own house, James Potter, and not a few other admirers besides. However, Lily also knew that she was a muggleborn, and this was constantly an obstacle for her. She pushed herself harder than anyone she knew, just to get half the credit for her efforts that any pureblooded student would by just sneezing. Even the halfbloods had it easier...once in a great while, Lily Evans would become extremely infuriated over this, and bitch to her close girlfriends, a few of whom were muggleborn as well. She was in the middle of a funk during an exam week and finally cracked. "Why the fuck do we have to do TWICE the work those goddamned purebloods do?? They are so bloody spoiled--all they do is have a bowel movement and they get the highest marks! I HATE this!"
Her friend, Lavinia, looked at her sympathetically. "You know, Lily, you're so lucky, you really don't know how good you have it, especially for a muggleborn. You're head girl, you have top marks above most of the other students in all of the houses, AND James Potter, one of the most popular men in all of Hogwarts, a pureblood, no less, has promised to MARRY you! That just doesn't usually happen to us muggleborns, Lily.
Just think about it."
Lily was silenced by her friend's wise words, but still she seethed inside. She still wanted more--and felt guilty, oh so guilty for it--but she had an ache she couldn't identify. Whether it was based on a mudblood insecurity complex, a desire to put a crack in her goody two shoes reputation, or reckless youth, she wasn't certain. But Lily Evans longed for more than life had given her. Her curiosity, her thirst for adventure, and knowledge,
would bring her to the attention of a very unlikely
individual. She didn't realize it yet, but she already wanted a new covenant.
