Darkness. It’s all Harry knows as he lies in the gilded cage. Voices jeer and holler at him through rolling clouds of black. Touches, caresses, slaps, pain. Faces contorted with pain swim across his vision. Hermione’s mouth is opened in an O of horror, Ron’s body twisted at impossible angles. They’re all gone. All dead. Leaving Harry all alone. He’s always been alone. But not like this.
He can’t breath. A large hand is wrapped around his slender throat in a vice-like grip. He chokes, sputters, entertaining those who wish to hurt him, those who do not know that he is secretly wishing to die inside. Just as the edges of his vision close in, the hand lets go. They never let him die. They’re much too cruel for that.
Shackles bind his skinny wrists to the floor. Harry could have pulled his hands out long ago. But he won’t. They keep him sane. They tell him that he is still part of this world when the spikes inside tear into his wrists. Pain. Red trickles down white skin. Harry stares at it in fascination, ignoring the hand that smacks his face, demanding his attention.
A gilded cage. The irony. The golden boy held in a golden cage. The jeers suddenly subside which means only one thing. He is here. A cold white spiderlike hand grips his bruised chin, turning his head up to meet a hot blood red gaze. Emerald meets garnet, hatred clashing in their stare. Voldemort sneers and suddenly there it is again. Pain, red hot and lancing through his body with a fire. Screaming. Who’s screaming? Suddenly, Harry realizes that those pained screams are his own. Pain. Darkness. That's all he knows anymore.
