Biding Time

Prologue

She had been so very careful, or so she had thought.

She had moved an ocean away. Yet, she could swear sometimes she could hear his tread on the stair behind her.

She had changed her name. Yet, she could almost hear the faint stirrings of the familiar syllables in her ear.

She had changed her life. Yet, the mask she wore felt so very thin and tenuous, even if she did almost believe the lie.

It had been ten years. Ten years in another country, in another life, and yet something had been happening over the last several months to give proof that all was not as she would have liked.

It had started with a change in the air. It had become chill, almost electric, like the air before a thunderstorm. The hairs on the back of her neck were constantly pricked, and she was always on edge. Then, the strange telephone calls which were nothing but static, but not quite just static. It had been a strange, low murmuring – voices without words or rather words without a voice.

Then, she had started catching half glimpses of figures reflected in mirrors and windows. At the corner of her eye, she would see a shape, a flash of colour, and then it would be gone. A jade sleeve fluttering out of sight, the shimmer of russet hair before she blinked and it was all gone.

She had started seeing familiar faces on would-be strangers and, on some of them, on their bare arms, she could almost swear that she saw the shadow of the dark mark before the sleeve would slither down the skin to conceal all.

From her silence and isolation, she could feel the mask, the false life, starting to slip.

Note: This story may be semi-slow going but there will definitely be some limey goodness in later chapters. Just setting the tone in the first few chapters.
