Hermione fluffed her hair with one hand and tugged at her too-short skirt with the other. She was wearing a short leather skirt and thigh high leather boots, her tank top had been slashed so it just reached the top of her ribcage. Her hair was as she always wore it, long and dark brown and in loose curls down her back, she was wearing a lot of makeup and jewellery. Her friend beside her grabbed her wrist.
“Hey, Herm stop fidgeting will ya? You’ll scare away the customers”
Hermione looked at her friend, slightly dazed “Huh? Oh, yeah, sorry Hallie.”
“What’s up with ya tonight anyhow, you seem distracted. Somethin’ buggin’ ya?”
Hermione frowned and shook her head, she smiled at Hallie. “No, I’m just tired, that’s all.”
“Well you’d better snap out of it, we’ve gotta work it tonight girly, rent’s due.” Hallie looked at her friend and colleague. “Come on, lets get out there.”
They made their way to their section of the long, broad strip of road where all the girls went and stood under a street lamp. A convertible sports car drove past with guys hanging out of the windows, they wolf-whistled at the girls. Hallie gave them the finger and then turned and smiled at a man walking past.
“Heya honey, lookin’ for a date?” She licked her lips and leaned against the street lamp, arching her back and sticking her chest out. The man looked a bit taken aback and quickly walked on away from the girls. Hallie pouted.
“Fraidy cat” She turned back to Hermione “I’m gonna go get something to eat. Be right back.” She walked off in her high heels and left Hermione to her thoughts.
Hermione leant against the lamppost Hallie had just left and sighed to herself. How had she managed to get to this point in her life?
During her sixth year her parents had died in a car crash, it was a sudden blow for Hermione and she was left confused and scared. Eventually she decided it was best for her to continue her education at Hogwarts. Although her parents had left her some money they were by no means rich and the money that that had left her was quickly used up on her final year of education, school things, her home and other necessities.
After school had finished Hermione was left completely alone, as she had no remaining relatives she was left with nobody to care for her. She refused all help from her friends insisting that she would be fine taking care of herself and could make do on her own. She had lost her house and had taken different part-time jobs in order to maintain an income but the hours were long and tiring and the money wasn’t good. A few nights on the street had turned in a few months and Hermione had been unable to save herself from the kind of life that she had always feared the most. She had nowhere to go.
Hallie had found her begging for money from strangers on the street and had taken her in, she had shown Hermione that she could earn hundreds of pounds a week by selling herself. She had refused at first, insisting that it was still beneath her to do so, but eventually she realized that she needed the money.
She felt cheap and dirty the first time she ever had sex for money, the man had been rough with her and had thrown the money at her feet when he was finished, leaving her to scrabble around in the dirt for it. She felt shaken and scared after that and had cried herself to sleep for many nights before she could finally convince herself to do it again, she was living in Hallie’s flat now with no way to pay her share of the rent. She had to pay her way.
Since then she had become accustomed to that way of life, she simply never allowed herself to become emotionally involved. That was what Hallie had taught her right from the start.
Her train of though was broken when Hallie got back “Had any yet?”
Hermione shook her head “No, it’s really slow tonight”
“Well it had better pick up, I ain’t goin’ hungry next month”
Hermione nodded in agreement and lit up a cigarette. She had started smoking shortly after her first trick, it helped her to dull the pain and humiliation she felt inside.
They stood for a while smoking and flirting with men who were walking by.
“Hey, Herm, look” Hermione looked up to see a car pull up a few yards away from them, a black Bentley “Rich bastard. Hey, you should try for him”
Hermione looked doubtful “You think I could get him?”
“Hell yeah, you’re a pretty young thing and guys like that. Go for it, see if you cant get our whole months rent in one, eh?”
Hermione was still uncertain but she nodded and looked determined. She sauntered over to the window of the car and rapped on the black tinted glass. She began to speak as it rolled down “Hey sugar, need a date?”
The driver looked up at her and she gasped as recognition flashed in his eyes. She stepped back, slightly embarrassed and stunned at who she was looking at.
“Professor Snape?”
