Summary: One goes off to war and leaves a message behind. It may seem like it is a HP/? Poem. I leave it up to you to decide who the other party is.
A/N: This is something that came to me the night a family member passed away. It seems to fit in the HP world, but looking back at it on our Independence Day, it could almost fit for any soldier in a war torn country who has had to leave their family. Bless them all.

When the gods and goddesses call me home
When you think you are all alone
When the sky darkens & the day light fades
When the fallen leaves litter the glades
When you hear our child cry
Will you stop and wonder why?
When daylight is covered in clouds
When the hawk cries aloud
When you see our child smile
Will you stop and play awhile?
When the days of rites arrive
When the time to teach of our lives
When you hear our child’s cry
Will you stop and wonder why?
When the days pass and nights are long
When you hear my favourite song
When you see our roses bloom
Will you step up out of the gloom?
When friends stop in to say hello
Will you try to be a jolly fellow?
When you want to cry but instead you laugh
Will you have learned to deal with the aftermath?
When it seems I’m nowhere near
When it seem I’ve left your dear
When it seems you naught by cry
Will you stop and wonder why?
When the wind caresses your cheek
When our little one seems too meek
When the world seems unfair
When it feels too much to bear
When these thoughts and others fill your head
Remember, my love, there’s nothing to dread.
While I may be cold and in the ground
My love for you can always be found.
When the birds fly, when our child will cry
Rest easy my love, my spirit is nearby
When the sun sets and the moon is high
Hear my whispers as the wind passes by.
When the air is filled with scents of spring
When you touch your golden ring
When our child holds your hand
Will you try to understand?
When you teach our child our ways
Remember me from your teaching days
When the protective side rears its head
Do not weep, do not feel dread.
When our child grows, loved and happy
When you remember me being sappy
When you wake in the middle of night
Will you remember we did what was right?
When the moon sits yellow in a midnight sky
I beg you love, don’t sit and cry, don’t question why
When the rain hides your tears & the sun warms your face
Remember I fought for all to have a better place.
When it all seems too big & all seems lost
Please, my love, don’t count me as a cost.
When the days & years pass o’er the sundial
Will you let our child see you smile?
When little feet find their way
Will you take the time to play?
When it all seems hardest
Will you remember today and what I say?
While the words are hard to read
While I can still feel your need
While my mouth caresses your lips
While my hands hold your hips
While this is my last day on this plane
Know my choices were never in vain
The monster I willingly go face
To give you and our child a better place.
So when the gods & goddesses call me home
Never feel I’ve left you alone
When you feel the urge to cry
When you feel the need to say “Why?”
Remember these words I say so clearly,
“I did it for those I love so dearly.”
