High and Dry
Severus Snape watched her house from a shadowy spot across the street. Remus Lupin was somewhere nearby, also watching, but Lupin was not there for the same reason Severus was. Lupin was there for protection, and Severus was there for reassurance, something only she could give him.

Two jumps in a week,
I bet you think that’s pretty clever don’t you boy?
Flying on your motorcycle,
Watching all the ground beneath you drop

This was the second night in a row he had stood in the shadows, watching, waiting for a chance. The night before he had been standing in the exact same spot, a broom stolen from Hogwarts clutched in one hand. On this night, however, the broom was lying, forgotten, on the ground beside him, and his hands bled as his fingernails dug into his palms. He waited.

Then he heard it, the ‘crack’ signaling apparation, and he raced across the street to her yard. With a quick flick of his wrist he unlatched the gate leading to her backyard, and slipped inside. Then, more waiting. More breathless hoping that he wouldn’t be caught, at least not yet. So, he waited.

Nothing.

So he had been right, the sound has been Lupin disapperating, and not someone coming to replace the watch. He had also been right about the wards around her house. They hadn’t changed them, and since he was still technically a member of the Order the wards allowed him access. Moody’s mantra of “constant vigilance” had obviously been tossed aside by the Order in their grief, even by Moody himself, and for that Severus was grateful.

Severus moved further into the backyard. He settled himself in a spot that was slightly lit by the moon light, but still held shadow. Then the real waiting began. Everything else had only built up to this, and Severus could feel a cold sweat forming on his skin. He stood deathly still, staring at what he somehow knew was her window, and he waited.

It took fifteen minutes for it to finally happen. Fifteen long, agonizing minutes, that made him want to run from the yard and never look back, but he had held his ground. The light in her window flickered on, and he saw her move around her room. Then, she paused, turned, and looked straight at him.

You’d kill yourself for recognition,
Kill yourself to never, ever stop

Countless seconds passed by as they stared at each other, then suddenly she spun around and ran from her room. Severus hesitated. Was she going to come out to him, or was she runing to get an Order member to take him away? His answer soon came as the backdoor opened and she stepped outside, alone. He held his breath as she moved toward him. He finally exhaled when she stopped mere feet in front of him, but he was still waiting.

It seemed like he was always waiting for her.

Her mouth opened and closed a few times before she finally spoke, “Severus...”

“Hermione,” he answered her slowly. Seeing her standing in front of him, with the moonlight illuminating her face, reminded him of just how young she was. Not yet eighteen and she had already seen enough to leave deep imprints on her soul.

You broke another mirror,
You’re turning into something you are not

“Your hand is bleeding,” she said softly, not daring to look him in the eyes just yet.

“I know”

She slowly brought her gaze up to meet his, and he was taken aback by the radiating sadness he saw in her chocolate brown eyes. Eyes that before had been so full of life that it had taken his breath away. “You look different,” she whispered.

“So do you,” Severus replied, his eyes scanning her face, committing every detail to memory. “You look older, more mature somehow.”

“It’s because of you.”

Don’t leave me high, don’t leave me dry
Don’t leave me high, don’t leave me dry

Drying up in conversation,
You’ll be the one who cannot talk

Severus felt his mouth go dry. A tense silence stretched between them, but he didn’t want to break it just yet. The longer they were silent the longer he could stay with her. As long as they were silent he didn’t have to tell her why he had come.

“You should be dead,” Hermione said suddenly. She stared at him, daring him to tell her otherwise, as her words crushed him with their weight.

All your insides fall to pieces,
You just sit there wishing you could still make love

Severus felt his stomach twist into a knot, and his chest felt as though it was caving in. “I know,” he said in a hoarse whisper.

“How could you do it?” She asked, her eyes pleading. The wind dried her tears before they could slide down her cheeks, but Severus still saw them. “You made me love you. You made love to me, and then you...” She wiped her eyes with the back of her hand and looked away from him. “Why are you here?”

“I need you to hate me,” was his only reply.

They’re the ones who’ll hate you
when you think you’ve got the world all sussed out
They’re the ones who’ll spit on you,
You’ll be the one screaming out

She looked up at him, her surprised evident on her face. “You know I can’t do that. No matter how much I want to, I just can’t.” He tears began to fall freely down her face, but she made not attempt to wipe them away.

Severus’ hands twitched with the desire to reach out to her, but he stopped himself. “You must. Think of all the things I have done to harm you. I called you names, insulted you, I stole your virginity away and I... I killed Albus.” Gods, that last one had hurt! He had to take a deep breath and smooth out the features of his face so she wouldn’t see how much it had pained him to kill the man who had loved him as a father loves a son. She couldn’t see how much he wanted to take it all back. She couldn’t know how many times he had begged Albus to release him from the promise he had been forced to make.

“Why do you want me to hate you?”

“So you can kill me when the time comes.”

Hermione wrapped her arms around herself and shook her head. “I could never... Why don’t you ask Harry or Ron to do it? I’m sure they would love to help you out.”

“Because you trusted me more than Albus himself. I hurt you the most with my actions.”

“You’re still hurting me.”

“How?”

“I still love you.”

Don’t leave me high, don’t leave me dry
Don’t leave me high, don’t leave me dry

Severus blinked in surprise. “After everything I have done to you, you still...”

“I think you should go,” Hermone said, cutting him off. Severus only nodded, and, after looking at her tear stained face once more, he turned to leave. He was about to sneak through the bushes when he heard her call out to him, “wait! Severus wait!”

Hermione rushed forward and placed her hand gently on his arm. “Won’t you at least kiss me good-bye?”

Severus gathered her up in his arms so fast that she didn’t have time to blink. His lips came crashing down upon hers in a kiss so full of sorrow and longing that it completely overwhelmed them.

Oh, it’s the best think that you ever had,
The best thing that you ever, ever had.

Everything came rushing back to him as he kissed her. He remembered the way she had looked on his bed. He remembered the softness of her skin, and the way her breathy moans tickled his lips. He could see the pleasure that was on her face as he had taken one of her rosy nipples between his lips, and the tears that had leaked from her eyes when he had broken her hymen.

He remembered how hot and tight she had felt around him on that first night, and all the nights after. He remembered how his name sounded coming from her lips as she cried out in pleasure, and the way she clung to him afterwards, whispering her love for him, making him love her. As he kissed her he wanted nothing more than to feel that way again. He wanted it so much it made his heart ache.

When he pulled his lips away from her’s he kept her in his arms. He gazed at her face, noting the way her tears escaped her closed eyes. Severus brushed her hair gently away from her face, and wished that time would stop so he could hold her for just a little while longer.

As Hermione’s eyes opened Severus leaned in and kissed the spot right below her ear, the one that had always produced breathy moans from her as they brought each other pleasure. This time, however, this time it wrenched a broken sob from her lips, and she shoved him away.

It’s the best thing that you ever had,
The best thing you have had has gone away.

“Why do you do this to me?” She cried. “You betrayed me, you betrayed everyone in the Order, but I don’t want you to leave. My heart aches for you when you are away, but I can’t have you. I’m so confused, and it’s because of you! I hate this... I hate you!”

Severus felt his heart shatter at her words, and he stumbled backwards. If this is what he had wanted, why did it hurt so much? He took several deep breaths, before looking at her. Her face was white, her eyes wide, and her hands had come up to cover her mouth.

“Good,” he gasped out.

He turned and rushed through the bushes before she could say anything else. He was halfway through the next yard when her heard he anguished cry. “No, Severus! Come back, don't leave me! Please!”

Don’t leave me high, don’t leave me dry
Don’t leave me high, don’t leave me dry
Don’t leave me high,
Don’t leave me high, don’t leave me dry

Severus wanted desperately to go back to her and take her in his arms, but he stopped himself. He knew that if he did he wouldn’t be able to leave again.

“Hermione?” Remus Lupin’s voice rang out through the still night air, and Severus had to force himself to leave. Lupin’s arms would hold and comfort Hermione that night, and Severus’ mind and heart screamed out at the very thought. He wanted to go back and steal her away, to kill Lupin so the dirty werewolf’s hands never touched his Hermione again, but he could not.

He would die by her hand, and it would be enough. It had to be.
