Albus Dumbledore sat staring into the fire, the silvered wisps of a memory swirling in the pensieve as he contemplated its meaning. The third true prophecy made by Sybil Trelawney and considered by most to be drunken ramblings as Sybil was known to have relied on the bottle as a way to escape the heavy handed mistreatment of Dolores Umbridge. Only Minerva McGonagall had recognized her words as what they were and had hastened to preserve the memory, using the Weasley twins’ parting salvo as the distraction that allowed her to use Dumbledore’s pensieve without notice. She had quickly bottled the memory and hidden it away. Umbridge had been far too furious at the twins and the mess they’d left behind to even notice the intrusion into the Headmaster’s office. Minerva had given the bottle to Dumbledore the night he’d returned to Hogwarts after the disastrous events at the Ministry of Magic.
The Changed One will be found after endless time wandering alone, sought by evil and not knowing where to turn…found by the Mirrored Knights who are stronger than any know. The Knights will protect her, keeping her secret and standing before her against all foes until her knowledge is complete and she can take her place beside them on the Day of Great Evil. As long as the three are bound together, the side of the Light cannot fail and Evil cannot gain dominion. Give aid to the Knights for their task is a noble one and will benefit all.
“What can it mean, Albus?” Minerva whispered worriedly. “But how can it be? How can new players be added to the equation at this late date?”
Dumbledore replied without looking up. “The players change as quickly as the events themselves, Minerva. Old players are left behind and new ones take their places…” He sighed, remembering the one they had lost at the Ministry. “Of course, it is also possible that these are players already known to us, just ones of whom we’ve not understood their importance…”
Minerva was silent a moment. Finally, she asked, “But what about Potter? Does this mean that he is not the key, after all?”
Dumbledore smiled, cocking his head at her and finally meeting her eyes, the twinkle that she’d not seen earlier returning. “Rarely do major events come down to the actions of one person. They are a skein of occurrences that weave together, one event causing another to occur until the tapestry cannot be divided into one single person or action. Somehow, the characters of this prophecy will affect or be affected by the other things that are already in play….” His eyes returned to the fire.
“But Albus…?” Minerva whispered, her voice falling into silence as she tried to put her questioning thoughts into words.
“As is generally the case with prophecy, Minerva, it is likely that things will not be explained until everything is all over and we can look back to see the patterns that we miss when it is happening….” He steepled his fingers and allowed his thoughts to follow their own direction. “Mirrored Knights…” he murmured to himself. “To whom could that refer?”
“So we can do nothing, Albus? Nothing but wait?” Minerva said in frustration.
“Wait,” Albus agreed. “And watch.” After a moment of silence, he added, “We’ll watch as events unfold. Perhaps something will be revealed along the way…”
