Chapter 1: Surprise Spies and Roommates
Hermione stopped outside the door to her new flat above Flourish and Blotts on Diagon Alley. She rummaged in her pockets for the key, finally giving up and doing an Accio.
Crossing the threshold she took in her new diggs. She noticed that while it was fully furnished as she had been told, everything was draped and a musty odor hung in the air.
She smiled wickedly realizing that she was the first to arrive and would have her pick of rooms. She had been told when she checked in at the ministry that morning that the other two students chosen for the internship were none other than Zabini and Malfoy.
Thinking of Malfoy brought the events of the last three weeks rushing back to her. Dumbledore was dead, at the hands of Snape no less. Their anger had turned to shock when they found out that Dumbledore, already dying, had asked Snape to kill him. Draco had been ordered to do it but Dumbledore wanted to spare him that burden.
They were doubly shocked the day Snape walked into headquarters at Grimauld Place with Draco in tow. Draco had taken the dark mark and was to become a spy like his Godfather. This had all been orchestrated by Dumbledore prior to his death.
Harry had gone to ground taking Ron with him and they were rumored to be in heavy training mode for the coming battle with Voldemort. Hermione was given the option to go with them but she had been offered an internship at the ministry that consisted of rotating through departments to find one that suited her. The Order had made a group decision that the chance to have a floater inside the ministry even for a short time could not be passed up.
The night before the boys left the “Golden Trio”, as she new they were called behind their backs met one last time. They discussed it, and decided that if any of them should return to Hogwarts in the fall for seventh year it should be Hermione. Ron had walked her back up to her room where they amicably ended their much lauded albeit brief relationship.

Hermione picked the largest room the one with the private bath; she was NOT sharing with the two princes. She left her trunk at the foot of her bed opened her window to begin airing the room out and went out to do the same in the sitting room. Once that was completed she began removing the sheets from the furniture and used a fabric refreshing charm to rid the overstuffed couches and armchair of the musky odor.
She heard a key in the door and walked out of her room where she had been unpacking to see that Malfoy had arrived with two house elves carrying his belongings (surprise surprise).
Hermione walked over to him and gave him a hug and a peck on the cheek, “Hello Draco,” she said.
“Hello yourself”, he replied, returning her hug and kissing her cheek.
To most people who knew them that would seem very odd. But, they had forged a tentative friendship during the two weeks they spent at headquarters. The still didn’t trust each other completely but they were working on it.
“Where pray tell, is your partner in crime?” Hermione quipped.
“He’s on his way; believe it or not he has more stuff than I do, “he replied.
“You guys are worse than girls,” she said.
“Don’t hate us because we’re pretty,” Draco Smirked.
He picked the second biggest room leaving Blaise with little more than a closet, which was ironic considering he had more stuff than either of his flatmates. He was quite looking forward to these living arrangements, he had been in a relationship with Blaise for several years and this gave them not only easy access but privacy. And Hermione, well she challenged him, and he really respected her for it.
After getting the house elves started unpacking Draco walked back in the sitting room to find Hermione leaning out the window with a cigarette in one hand. She was leaning on her elbows giving him a perfect view of her glorious rear. She had come so far from the mousy little thing she was in the first year. Her hair had been straigtend and was cut in layers that were all over the place and fell just to her chin, and she had added russet highlights.
“I didn’t know you smoked Granger, “ he said walking over to her, taking the cigarette out of her hand and taking a long drag on it.
“There are lots of things you don’t know about me Malfoy,” she replied.
