Reflection
Disclaimer: They belong to J.K. Rowling, not me, and I don’t make a profit. I’ve just borrowed the characters for my own amusement.
Author's Note: This is the First chapter of my first ever original fan fiction. I hope you all like it, and please review if you want to find out what happens next. ;) This is a Sirius Black/Remus Lupin story, so if that offends you, please don’t read on. Slashygoodness ahead.
London, Present
It was raining, and it was going to rain. It didn’t used to, not before he fell. Remus stood looking out the window, watching as raindrops hit the glass, trying to stop the tears that were threatening to spill from the corners of his eyes.
“God Sirius, why couldn’t you stay?” He whispers this to the rain, whispers even though he is alone. “I remember when we first met…we were eleven years old and you were already an arrogant jackass…”

Hogwarts express, September 1971
Remus Lupin was staring out the window watching the scenery as the train sped towards Hogwarts. He couldn’t remember a time when he’d been more excited in his whole life. He turned his head as the compartment door opened, and in came a frightened looking boy who looked about his age and was slightly overweight.
“Hi, I’m Peter Pettigrew, do you mind if I sit with you? Everywhere else is full.”
“Of course you can sit in here. I’m Remus Lupin. It’s nice to meet you.”
“Than—”
They were interrupted as the compartment door was opened for a second time. “Hi. James Potter.” The second boy was followed in by a third, both boys had black hair, James’ was extremely messy, but the other’s was slicked back; he looked as if he could have been royalty.
“Oh. I’m Sirius. Black.”
“I’m Remus Lupin, and this is Peter Pettigrew.” Remus watched, transfixed, as Sirius and James sat down. Sirius put both hands in his hair and ran his fingers through it. Some time later when it dried it was very straight and a little messy.
“I’m the Black family heir, I have to ‘look a certain way in public’, I’m not supposed to associate with the wrong people either. I do hope that you guys are the ‘wrong people’. He smiled and laughed and the other three joined in.
The four boys talked amiably all the way to Hogwarts and after their journey across the lake, they were pleasantly surprised to find that they were all sorted into the same house; and would be sharing a dormitory for the next seven years. Their friendship grew fast and strong, and on Halloween night they lost their house two hundred points.

Halloween night 1971
“Hurry up Peter. You have to walk at the same pace as the rest of us or someone’s going to see your feet.” Sirius scolded the other boy jovially.
“I am hurrying. You guys are walking too fast.” Peter whined.
“If we don’t stop talking no one is going to have to see Peter’s feet.” This last part came from James, to whom the invisibility cloak belonged.
“Why are we out of bed at two in the morning anyway?” Remus asked in a whisper.
Sirius stopped and they all ran into him. “I told you, I heard Snape telling his buddies that he was going to meet Jenkins for a duel. I want to see Snivellus get a good hexing.”
“Oh right, we are risking expulsion for your amusement. I remember now.” Remus smiled as he chided Sirius.
“No Remus, we are risking expulsion for our collective amusement.” James had to hold back a laugh and Peter snorted rather loudly.
When the foursome finally arrived at the charms classroom they found it empty, but they heard footsteps leading off toward the dungeon, and hoping to get a glimpse of Snape, the boys hurried off in that direction. They hadn’t made it down the first corridor when the caretaker’s cat spotted one of Peter’s feet and wound her way between his legs, tripping the clumsy boy. All four of them landed in a heap, and were caught when Filch himself appeared moments later.
It wasn’t until they were safe in their beds that they all laughed at the events of the evening. They had lost two hundred points for Gryffindor, but they were not expelled.

Remus whipped a tear from his eyes and smiled. “I remember every good time we had and every bad. You and James led us astray often, and we let you. I even remember that time in sixth year when we got detention from Slughorn…”

Hogwarts. December 1976
“Sirius Black and Remus Lupin, what do you think you are doing?”
“It’s a vanishing potion professor. I thought it would be funny to use it on Miss Laken’s clothes… Remus didn’t have anything to do with it, he was trying to dissuade me from doing it.” Remus had to give it to Sirius, he kept a straight face throughout his entire explanation. Much to the dismay of the young lady in question.
“He looked as if he were egging you on. You will both come down tomorrow night at seven pm for detention.”
“But I really wasn’t spurring him on Professor.”
“Not another word or I’ll make it all week Mr. Lupin.”

Later that same night
“This is so not fair. Once again you’ve landed me in detention for something I didn’t do.” Remus and Sirius were heading down to Slughorn’s office to receive their punishment.
“Really Moony, it could have been worse; I could have landed us in detention all week.” Sirius was laughing at the situation he had created, and not even trying to hide it. “At least I didn’t just get you into trouble this time, detention is much better with two people.” With this statement Sirius winked at him and threw his arm around his shoulders. “You never know what’s going to happen.”
“Oh Pads, I probably wouldn’t mind so much if you showed an ounce of resentment for landing me in trouble with you. Probably.” Remus couldn’t help but smile, there was no one he would rather be in detention with than Sirius. It was only lately that Remus had started realizing what he felt for Sirius, that he didn’t feel for Peter or James. He was in love with his best friend. He knew he would never be able to tell him, but he couldn’t help how he felt. His favorite moments at Hogwarts were the ones in which he found himself alone with Sirius.
“Ah, gentlemen, please come in and sit down.” Slughorn had been waiting outside his office for them.
“Yes sir.” Replied Remus and Sirius.
“Now buys, I do realize that you thought you were being funny, but potions class is not a joke. I dare say Miss Laken would have been very embarrassed had your scheme succeeded.”
“Yes sir, but the rest of the class would have been very happy. Excepting Miss Evans, perhaps…” Sirius just couldn’t help himself, he was drawn to trouble as if a spell had been cast on him as a boy to make him long for mischief.
“Mr. Black! That is quite enough.”
“Yes sir.”
“Now, you boys will be scrubbing out the first years cauldrons, and you won’t be leaving until they are spotless. Do you understand?”
“Yes sir, we do.” Remus piped up before Sirius could get them into any more trouble. And off they went to scrub cauldrons; but it was what happened after the detention, on their way back to Gryffindor tower that would etch the memory into Remus’ mind forever.
