~Chapter One~
Seeking Severus
It was only a month before the start of there next school year and Hermione had spent most of the summer with the Weasely family.Of course, they welcomed her and Harry to stay with them as long as they liked, considering what happened the previous year.Hermione knew she probably should have spent the summer with her mum and dad,but decided that if Harry decided to do anything foolish, she would want to be there to either stop him or help in any way she could.Even with the Weasely house full of cheerfull faces and everyone carrying on about how lovely Fleur and Bill's wedding was,Harry seemed to shut himself away from everyone and did not wish to join in on any of the festivities.Hermione could not blame him for acting this way and felt that way at times herself, but she felt that she must put on a brave face and not show that inside she was actually a bundle of emotions.
Before the end of last year,Hermione had gotten to know her Ex-Professor a little more than she should have.It was not a romantic involment but it was definitely closer than she had seen anyone get to him.She remembers that it all started because she was taking extra classes in all of her subjects to prepare for the O.W.L.S exams.Of course, she ended up spending most of her time, when she was supposed to be attending to Head Girl duties late at night,in Snape's classroom. She knew that he despised her,and that if she did not take the extra time to show him how much she wanted an O for Outstanding in the Dark Arts, that he would pass her but not give her the O she needed to pursue her career as a Medi witch.
Hermione absolutely hated having to go to his classroom every night,as im sure he enjoyed seeing the school "Know it all" trying to prove herself further. At every late night lesson,Hermione could only smile to herself knowing that next year she would not have to attend his classes,if she recived the grade she deserved.Every night he was just as foul and moody as he was in any of his classes during the day,as Hermione had grown accustomed to this over the years, and just kept quiet at his snide remarks as he would carry on.
But one night, when Hermione entered the classroom and sat down in her seat, she found Snape to be a little less foul and a bit more distraught,as he sat in his chair looking a bit sallow. He looked quite sick and her first instinct was to go get Madam Pomfrey, when he looked over at her with his sunken brown eyes. They looked void of any emotion as he seemed to stare down at the floor, then back at Hermione,as he began to open his mouth to speak.
"No class tonight Miss Granger.Im not in the right frame of mind to teach you things you already know just so you can seek more attention..."He states trailing off,as she stares at him angerly.
"For your information,Professor...Im doing this so that I can do well on my Owl exams.I would not be here just to recive attention from you...of all people."Hermione states expecting to have house points taken away,as he merely glances over at her.
"I assure you Miss Granger that you would do well on your exams without my assistance...and I must agree that if I were you I would not wish attention from myself either..so leave...."Snape states somberly,as Hermione stares at him in shock for a moment, then begins to pick up her books to leave. As Hermione turns her back towards him,and begins heading towards the door, she can hear something that almost sounds like someone crying. She turns around only to find that Snape is draped over his desk weeping,as Hermione stands there in a state almost beyond shock.
*What the bloody hell should I do!*She thinks to herself, just wanting to run out of the room,as she stares at him in this pathetic state.Hermione does not have the slightest clue as to how to comfort such a foul man,nor does she think she even wants to try.As she begins to turn her heel to leave the room,Snape begans to call out to her.
"Hermione....don't leave...."Snape mumbles through his tears,as she turns to face him with a look of utter horror on her face. She begins to walk towards him nervously not knowing what to expect,as she stands next to him at his desk.As Snape looks up with tears rolling down his pale face,he clings onto her, wrapping his massive arms around her small frame. All she can do is stand there in a mixture of horror and shock as he does this. When she feels as if she is going to push him away,he looks up at her and Hermione finds herself actually wiping the tears from his face,as he burries his face into her robes.
That was the night when there relationship began. He did not tell Hermione what was bothering him,but from that night forward they seemed to share some sort of understanding between each other. He was still foul at times but he also seemed to value her company. They would even go off the topic of the Dark Arts and talk about current events and just chat with one another like they were friends.Hermione enjoyed having intelligent conversation with him when she could, and even found her way to him when she did not have class with him.Of course,no one knew of there friendship, not even her closest friends Ron and Harry, which she knew was for there own good.
As her and Snape became closer,Hermione felt it was time to ask him why he seemed so distraugt most of the time.He had told her before that he could not say, just that he wanted her company when he was not feeling at his best.Of course, she recived her answer with a deep blow to her heart.Snape had killed Dumbledore and it seemed he was still faithfull to "You know who".Hermione knew that Harry would'nt lie,and the fact that Hagrid saw him run into the forest with Draco and the other deatheaters only confirmed it.She was confused and did not understand why he had wished her company all of those times,if this was what he had planned on doing from the beginning.
As Hermione sat at the funeral, she felt as if she did not have a right to mourn there former Headmaster. Her thoughts kept trailing to Snape, wondering if he was under the imperious curse or tricked into it.Then she kept remembering that Draco was Snape's godson and Harry was suspicious of both of them from the beginning, but no one listened to him.She became friends with a deatheater and was a little to close to him for comfort, she was relieved that no one knew of there so called friendship, but at the same time she could not help but miss him which made her feel utterly horrible. She wished she could tell Harry and Ron about everything that was going on in her head but as Harry was going on about how he would drop out of school, then find "You know who" and all of his followers and kill them, she knew that she would have to carry her burden alone.
As she sat there thinking about all of this at the Weasely's dinner table, she knew that she had some choices to make before the start of the next school year.Would she go back to school and follow the path of becoming a medi witch, which was what she had planned to do for her lifes work.Would she follow Harry and help him try to bring "You know who" down for good, she knew that her booksmarts had helped him on many occasions and wished to be there for her friend.Or would she try to seek out Snape and ask him why he did it,of course she thought this was the mindless thing to do and that she would probably get killed in the process. She thought that trying to find Snape and actually speak with him like he is a normal human being, was not only ridiculous, but impractical.
As Hermione sat there watching everyone having a good time, she realized the only thing that was keeping her from joining in and not just pretending to be happy, was Severus Snape. She knew that she had a month left until school started and decided, that she still needed to think about what she was going to do.As Harry seemed to walk into the room, without the slightest bit of recognition that anyone was there,he sat next to Hermione not saying a word. She looked over at her friend sadly, and tried not to let him know that she felt sorry for him,as she looked towards Ron who was talking with his brothers Fred and George.Hermione knew that she had to make a decision soon, and only hoped that it would not hurt anyone close to her,or hurt her chances to live a happy life.
