Against All Odds
Disclaimer: I don’t own the characters, the world. Nada. And, I’ll admit it, it is a bit of a song fic. It is a bit more inspired by the song than following the actual words.
He was walking away.
Remus could almost imagine the man’s teaching robes billowing behind him as he stalked off into the sunset. It was cruel, Remus thought to himself from the distance his mind had seemed to run to, that there was no rain. There should be rain, really, not this heart-breakingly beautiful sunset of layered red, gold and blue. There should be a cold biting rain pounding on Remus’ head. That would be fitting.
He had fought to gain Severus’ love and trust for so long. He had spent countless hours talking to Severus, and coaxing his lighter, more jovial, but still snarky, side out. He had made millions of cups of tea, thousands of dinners, and in the last few months even a couple breakfasts. All that time and effort had apparently been wasted. As proof of this, Severus walked away without a backwards glance.
Remus just continued to stand on the doorstep unable to react, unable to think. Hence the rain thought. He did not want the happy ending stereotype, he wanted the fitting rain stereotype. He supposed though that the tears coursing down his cheeks might cover that lack well enough.
A hand on his shoulder woke him up as Severus turned the corner. Remus turned his head and caught sight of Sirius. He was stunned through his haze by the look of commiseration on Sirius’ face.
Nothing was fitting today! Sirius was supposed to be happy. He had never liked the Remus and Severus couple, he had always said that this was going to happen. How many times had Sirius said “He’s not worth it, Moony. He’ll just hurt you.”?
“Why aren’t you chasing him, Moony?” Sirius asked.
“Why would I do that?” Remus asked in a dull voice he did not recognize as his own. Sirius just stared at him like he had lost his mind.
Maybe he had.
Sirius just cupped Remus’ cheek and brushed a lone tear from his soaked and salty cheek. He tilted his head and gave Remus a smile that managed to be resigned and encouraging at the same time. “You love him.”
“He doesn’t love me.”
Ignoring Remus’ protest Sirius asked, “Did you ever tell him?” After Remus’ dull head shake Sirius gave him a little shove off the step. Remus stumbled back, but managed to regain his balance and gaze up at Sirius. “Go,” was all he said and Remus was off running, hoping against hope that he could reach the Potions Master before he reached an apparation point.
People crowded the streets on the beautiful summer night. Couples walked everywhere in varying displays of affection. These sights spurred Remus’ need and he ran full speed. Eventually he just stopped dodging people and ran through them. A few people landed unceremoniously on their behinds.
His breath was pounding in and out of his chest, his feet were barely touching the pavement, and his arms were swing wildly. Finally he caught sight of the all too familiar figure stalking down the street. A part of Remus realized that Severus had no problem getting the crowd to part before him.
Severus began to turn in to an alley just as Remus was getting in to yelling distance. “ SEVERUS ” Remus bellowed, using what was left of his breathe to gain his lover’s attention.
Severus paused and slowly turned. Remus just flung his arms around the beautiful neck, leaning into the strong chest he loved so much. Severus just looked down at him, not reacting, his eyes cold and distant. He tried to push Remus away, but
Remus would have none of that, he had come to say something and he would not wait.
Gasping for breath he managed to choke out a ragged “I love you.” Severus just continued to stare at him and the already broken pieces of his heart began to shrivel. Once he had gotten more of his breath he spoke again. “I love you. You can’t go. I didn’t tell you before, I know. I was dumb. I just assumed that you did not want to hear it. I thought it would scare you away, so I didn’t even think it. Please, please, Severus, come back with me.”
Severus looked away and when he turned back a smile split his face and his black eyes had turned to onyx from coal. Lifting his hands to his lover’s face he wiped at the streaks. “You are quite the foolish pup,” he whispered, and Remus grinned foolishly up at him. Severus drew him in and held him tightly against his chest. Snuggling his nose into the sweet scented chestnut hair he whispered a quiet I love you.
He lifted Remus’ face and stared into eyes glittering with the mirror image of his own tears and leaned forward, sealing their mouths in a deep kiss. A kiss meant to reaffirm their proclamations. It was filled with the fire of a crucible and burned away all the doubts they might have had. Then Severus deepened it, allowing himself to explore the familiar recesses of his love’s mouth. He pulled back slowly and peered down at the werewolf’s closed eyes, and couldn’t help the grin that formed as those auburn eyes slowly opened.
Severus leaned forward again and nipped at the earlobe before him, eliciting a deep groan from the smaller man. “Let us depart to a more … suitable place for our discussion,” he whispered into the blushing ear before him. Before Remus could respond Severus had apparated them away.
Note: As you can tell. It is just a scene. I’m trying to get myself to finish stuff, so I am starting small. I’ll, hopefully, just be posting a bunch of these for a while. Anyone want to make a pairing suggestion?
