Nymphadora Tonks was the lucky owner of a five-inch mirror.
She didn\'t know where she got or nor did she quite care, the only fact that became increasingly clear to her was that it was a damn blessing to have such a thing nearby. To be honest, Tonks couldn\'t quite say she was obsessive over her apparence, but being able to change it...well, a mirror could come in handy.
And since there was no important business going on, no real plans; just the gaping, useless space of free time after lunch, she had retreated to her room for a nap and, finding sleep refused to take her, simply sat up and played with the color of her hair for a good four minutes before Sirius entered.
Tonks manadged a little jump. Smiling wryly, he sat down at the base of her bed.
\"Wotcher, Black.\" she said heartedly.
There was an awkward pause. The mirror glittered, his haggard, once handsome appearence reflected along side her\'s. She stared at the two of them together for a moment, a simple illusion in a five-inch piece of glass, and then heard him whisper; \"I like your hair that length.\"
\"Thanks.\" said Tonks briskly.
\"What about a different color?\" he suggested in a uncomfortable, almost inaudiable attempt at starting a settling conversation.
\"I dunno.\" she said, poking the shining spikes with two fingers. \"I kinda like this color of brown, but it may be a bit too dark...\"
\"For your face.\" Sirius said, unprovoked. Tonks stiffled a giggle. \"Since when are you the fashion expert, Sirius?\"
\"Since I was the eye-candy of Hogwarts.\" he said jokingly. The both smiled for a moment, and then his face softened and darkened into a grim, accepting expression. It was quite clear to Nyphadora exactly why - all that time in Azkaban had ruined his apperence. But it wasn\'t his looks he seemed concerned with, it was his stolen time. Time he should have spent with Harry, with Dumbledore and Lupin...with her...
\"Something wrong\" she said.
\"Nah, just...memories.\" Sirius said vaguley. \"But...I mean, while we\'re on the subject...Harry was at the Dursley\'s and... \" he trailed off. his voice the perfect mixture between humiliation and sheer, fatherly worry.
\"Don\'t fret.\" she said quickly. \"He looked fine. No marks, if that\'s what you\'re asking.\"
Sirius tried to smile. What came was a sort of strangled gasp.
\"I\'m sorry.\" he said finally.
\"It\'s nothing.\" she whispered. \"I know it\'s becoming quite obvious. I think Ron and Hermione were outright told how those damn pigs treat him.\"
\"Sure.\" Sirius scoffed. \"Well, we\'ll have him next holiday, that\'ll cheer him up.\"
Tonks set down her mirror and spared him a weary glance. \"What are you planning to tell him then?...\"
\"You know...\" Sirius muttered drly. \"That I\'m there.\"
\"He already knows.\" Tonks said, laying down across the matress lazily. \"I know he\'s just a boy, and I know he\'s got so much piled up on his shoulders at the moment...but Sirius, it would be so much better for you to calm down and accept the fact that you can\'t help him while he\'s in Hogwarts.\"
\"I can use Floo Powder.\" he suggested hopefully.
\"I didn\'t mean that.\" she said, smiling a little. \"I was referring to the fact that he has to live his life on his own. With you to back him up, of course, but...\"
\"If those bastard\'s so much as TOUCH him next summer...\" he began threateningly, and Tonks drew back at the sudden flash of fury blazing behind his eyes. She paused for a moment, and relief washed over her. It was frightening in the moment, really, to see Sirius so flustered, but the fact that he cared so much for the boy was just...moving. Unnerving. It made her want to cry, to throw her arms around him and -
\"Tonks?\"
It took her a moment to registar the fact that the soft thing she was laying on was not the matress anymore, but Sirius\' lap. She blushed apologetically, straiting up, relizing the she must have shifted during their conversation, but Sirius held up a hand and she froze. A broad, daring smile had lit up his face.
\"I know!\" he said triumphantly, and for a moment, he seemed anything but himself - the look on his face was so silly and young and alive. She thought, perhaps, it was the way he looked before being sentanced to Azkaban; happy and carefree and, in a way, simply beautiful.
\"Pink!\" he declared heartedly.
\"...huh!?\" she breathed, bewildered.
\"Your hair.\" he pressed. \"A bright pink, like bubblegum. You\'re too spirited for dark hair, you know? Just sort of - \" he held his arms out for emphasis. \"Free.\"
It took Tonks some time for his words to sink in, but once they did, a broad smile lit up her features and she beamed happily, groping for her wand, which she had left conviently by her mirror. She paused for a moment, tapping the tip at her scalp, and her hair snapped into a bright, fiery shade of pink. Sirius broke out into a childish smile.
\"Pink it is.\" she said in final tones.
