Prologue:
They
We all need a reason to live. That’s why there’s love. Because for love we live, for love we die . . .
They were gone in an instant but no one noticed the loss. They had been fading for an eternity, slowly becoming lost among new rituals and modern beliefs. Their power, once so vast, vanished. In the past mortals feared and worshipped them, now they were merely stories – mythical legends that most believed never existed. They once ruled the world, once controlled the rising and the setting of the sun. They had aided in creating life because they in essence controlled death. But now, they were no more.
It was quite sad, really.
But sadness has no place here. Sadness was foreign to them – as were all emotions. Thus explaining why they were so feared. They did not know the meaning of the world “feeling.” They created life without love. They created war without hate. They killed without any feeling of remorse. To them, life had no value.
And consequently, they felt no passion.
Which is why they killed – why they seduced men and women – why they ruled with no mercy. They wanted to know what it meant to feel. They wanted to know how it felt to need. Love, hate, passion. They wanted it. They were greedy. They knew they could never feel, but they tried none-the-less with no regard for the lives they destroyed.
They wanted a reason to live, but more importantly they wanted a reason to die.
But they never died – they simply faded away.
