Prologue
“Severus, there’s no other way. Now that Voldemort knows you’re a spy he will target the ones you love.” Albus Dumbledore said.
Severus Snape, feared Potions Master of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry was pacing the length of the small kitchen at 12 Grimmwauld Place, the secret headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix.
“She will never agree to it Albus. You, me and everyone else in this room knows my mother will never go into hiding.” Severus grumbled as he paced.
“Severus, you’re the only one that she will listen to.” Remus said.
“Give it up Remus. Snape obviously doesn’t care if his mother lives or dies.” Sirius said from where he sat, his chair leaning against the wall.
Everyone in the room groaned. Sirius still tried to get a rise out of Severus. Just as Severus did the same. Severus stopped pacing and whirled around to face Sirius.
“Tell me Black. What do you know about family loyalties? Huh? When your brother died you weren’t that heartbroken. Same with your father and mother.” Severus snarled.
Sirius leapt to his feet. Him and Severus were staring daggers at each other.
“I would love nothing more than to hand deliver you to Voldemort myself.” Sirius hissed.
“Ha! As if you could take me. Either by a Wizard’s Duel or a muggle one.” Severus retorted.
“Oh for Merlin’s sakes! Sirius, professor, sit down and shut up!” Hermione Granger called out as she jumped to her feet.
Everyone stared at the 18 year-old witch in surprise and shock.
“Sirius, professor, I believe I said to sit down. I meant now.” Hermione said.
Both Wizards reluctantly sat down. Hermione remained standing.
“I swear! You two are worse than Harry, Ron and Draco. Now, the point of this meeting is to figure out how to protect Professor Snape’s mother. From what I’ve been told, Remus and Professor Dumbledore are right. Professor Snape, you have to convince your mother that going into hiding is the best thing for her right now.” she said.
“And how pre tell, Miss Granger do we do that? My mother, Isabell Snape, doesn’t take orders she gives them.” Severus asked sarcastically.
“Hermione will go with you and explain the situation.” Albus answered.
Severus sighed heavily. He sat down in his chair.
“Miss Granger, I really hope you know what you’re getting into. If you think I’m harsh and stubborn, you haven’t seen anything. My mother makes me look like a pansy.” he said wearily.
“Sir, I am well aware of that. Professor Dumbledore has shown me a few memories of your mother. I can handle myself just fine. I assure you.” she replied with a smile.
“It’s settled then. You two leave as soon as the meeting is over.” Albus said.
Thirty minutes later Severus stood at the living room window waiting on Hermione.
‘I hope Miss Granger can help convince my mother to go along with Albus’s plan. She’s the only family I have left. Well, blood family that is.’ he thought as he stared out the window.
“Professor?” Hermione said as she entered the room.
“Are you ready Miss Granger?” Severus asked as he faced her.
She simply nodded. The two walked out of the house silently. They made their way to an alley a few blocks away. From there they would apparate to Severus’s family home.
“You do have your apparation license right?” he asked.
“Yes sir.” she answered.
“Take my hand. I promise I won’t bite. We will apparate together. Since I know where to go you have to be touching me.” Severus explained.
Hermione simply nodded as she took his hand. A few seconds later the two disappeared. They re-appeared a few seconds later standing before a large iron gate. Before Hermione could speak the gates opened wide.
“Let’s go. Now remember, my mother can be and is very intimidating at times. Don’t let her intimidate you. Understand?” Severus said.
“Yes sir. To be honest your mother sounds an awful lot like my grandmother Alexander. She was quite scary to be honest.” Hermione replied with a giggle.
Together they walked up the path to the three story brick mansion. Before he knocked Severus took a deep breath. Hermione patted his shoulder comfortingly. The door was opened by an elderly house-elf.
“Ah, Master Severus. Yous have been expected. Follow me.” the house-elf said.
Hermione and Severus followed the elf through the house. They were taken to the sitting room. There sat a woman in what looked to be her mid fifties. She had graying raven black hair. With the exception of his nose Severus looked very much like his mother.
“Thank you Oron. That will be all for now.” Isabell said.
Oron bowed and vanished with a pop.
“Mother.” Severus said.
“Hello Severus. And who is this lovely young witch?” Isabell asked.
“I’m Hermione Granger, Mrs. Snape. It’s nice to meet you.” Hermione answered politely.
“My, you have good manners for a young witch. Now, what brings you two here?” Isabelle said with a smile.
“Mother, Albus feels that for your own safety you should leave the manor for a short time.” Severus replied.
“Go into hiding you mean. Why ever should I do that?” Isabell questioned.
“Voldemort knows I’m a spy mother. He will no doubt come after the ones I love. You are the only family I have.” Severus answered.
“I will not leave my home. It will take more than that pathetic excuse of a Wizard and his followers to chase me from my home.” Isabell said firmly.
“Mrs. Snape, your son and Professor Dumbledore only care about your safety. The Order has been seeing more and more attacks. We are only trying to protect you as well as the family members of those in the Order.” Hermione added.
Isabell faced Hermione. She stared at the young witch for a while. Isabell could that something was different about her.
“How old are you Hermione Granger?” Isabell asked.
“Technically I will be 21 in September.” Hermione answered.
“How is that? You are a student of my son’s are you not?” Isabell questioned.
“Yes ma’am. I’ve used a time-turner since my third year. I have gained 3 years.” Hermione replied.
“Tell me, how can the Order of the Phoenix protect me better than I can protect myself?” Isabell asked.
“Mother! Now is not the time to ask questions! Please, trust Albus to do what’s best!” Severus pleaded.
“Mrs. Snape, Voldemort has been targeting family members of those who defy him. The summer before my 6th year my parents were both killed. I know how Professor Snape feels. Please Mrs. Snape, come back with us. I don’t want anyone to go through what I went through 2 years ago.” Hermione added.
Isabell smiled gently at her.
“Very well. Give me a few minutes to gather my belongings.” Isabell said.
Severus sighed as his mother headed upstairs. He turned and faced Hermione.
“Thank you Miss Granger. For getting my mother to come back with us.” Severus said.
“No thanks are needed sir. It’s my pleasure to help you and your mother.” Hermione said with a smile as she patted his arm.
Isabell watched Hermione and her son from the dark stairwell.
“What do you think Oron?” Isabell whispered to the elf.
“Me thinks she is a perfect match for Master Severus.” Oron answered.
“Me too.” Isabell said with a smile.
She then made her way down the stairs. As she did she admired the picture Hermione and her son made.
“I’m ready.” she said.
“Thank you mother. For coming with us.” Severus said.
Isabell smiled at her only son. The three then apparate from Snape Manor to 12 Grimmwauld Place. Once there Isabell was taken to see Albus.
“Ah, my dear Isabell. It’s good to see you again.” Albus greeted as he kissed her cheek.
“Hello Albus. How are you?” Isabell replied.
“I’ve been better. Now, for the time being you will be staying here. Just until the final preparations are finished on the home you will be staying at.” Albus answered.
“Fine. Now, I would like to rest before dinner if you don’t mind.” Isabell said.
Albus nodded and led Isabell upstairs to her room. Hermione smiled gently at Severus as she turned and left the room. Severus simply nodded. A few minutes later he left and entered the library. At the doorway he heard someone speaking. It took half a second for him to realize it was Hermione talking.
“Oh Crookshanks, what do I do? Who would have ever thought I would have fallen in love with him of all people. Too bad he could never love me in return. Why? Why did it have to be Severus Snape?” Hermione said to her cat.
Severus quietly slipped out of the room. Once in his room he let out the breath he was holding.
“Hermione Granger loves me.” he said quietly to himself.
