I Waited

Okay, I have literally just finished the Half-Blood Prince and this little beauty just jumped into my head. Flames will be ignored, constructive criticisms are loved.

Warning: Big-ass spoiler for the Half-Blood Prince, if you read on after this it’s your own damn fault!

I Waited


I promised him I’d wait. It went unsaid, but he knew that it was there.

For three weeks I was where I have always wanted to be. In his arms, his lips on mine. Even then I knew it wouldn’t last. Something would happen, someone would be hurt and in a fit of honour he would nobly give me up for my protection. And I was right, I hated it, but I was right.

The moment we looked at each other during the merpeople song at Dumbledore’s funeral, we each understood.
I knew that he was going to leave. I knew he was going to find a way to destroy Voldemort.
And I knew I had to let him. And he knew I would wait. I had waited six years to be with him. I could wait longer.

And I did. I waited for him to come back with his fight with Voldemort. I waited for months at his bedside for him to wake up. I waited to see the glow in his eyes as he opened them again for the first time.
I waited for him to come out the darkness that had surrounded him. I waited for life to shine in him again.

And when he visited Hogwarts again I was there, waiting as he bid farewell to the ones he had lost. I waited in his arms as he leaned in to kiss me with a whispered “I missed you. I love you.”

And now I wait for him. Standing by our son’s crib, stroking his red hair and looking into his emerald eyes.

I wait as he looks at us, his wife and his son safe. Because of him. Because I waited for him.
