It's Between Me and the Dog

Author\'s Note:

Bryn sat back and sighed. This was going to take forever! The report had to be written, however, as much as she didn\'t want to do it.

Things had been a HUGE mess when she arrived at the scene of the latest crime. Neighbors had come in and cleaned up the house (masking some clues and completely obliterating others) and no one would tell her whether or not they actually saw anyone coming or going from the house around the time of the robbery. She couldn\'t say it, but she suspected that they tampered with the crime scene on purpose.

Sitting back up, she muttered, \"Nice, Bryn, just keep on stalling, the report will write itself. Not that it will matter, because Bones won\'t mind that you have absolutely nothing of value to report other than there WAS a break in. Bloody hell, I need sleep.\" Groaning, she rubbed her temples and glanced up.

Kingsley smiled at her. \"Yes, you do. Go home and write it in the morning.\" She moved to protest and he shook his head. \"No, no protesting, Bryn, just go home and go to bed. I\'ll take care of anyone who gets upset about you not turning it in fast enough. You\'ll be able to think better after a full night\'s rest, anyway.\"

Reluctantly, Bryn nodded. \"All right, Sir. Do me a favor, though?\"

He turned back to her. \"What\'s that?\"

Smiling, she made a face at him. \"Take a bloody shower?\"

Kingsley stared at her for a moment before looking down at his travel worn and very stained robes. \"I guess I COULD use some freshening up, couldn\'t I?\"

Bryn snorted and crossed her arms. \"I\'ve smelled corpses with a better odor. What were you doing in Ireland, anyway?\"

Kingsley visibly swallowed and failed at affecting an air of nonchalance. \"Oh, just getting some things in order. Sorry I didn\'t go home and get cleaned up before coming here.\"

Shaking her head, Bryn gathered her things and left.

The steam rose invitingly from the cup of tea as Bryn curled up on the couch. She pulled a quilt off the back and closed her eyes, it had been an extremely long day. First, Jason had said he didn\'t want to see her anymore. Then there was the woman who had reported her neighbor for supposedly doing \"Dark Magic.\" Bryn had found out that the man was only trying to charm her clothes dry so he didn\'t have to, as he put it, \"see any more underwear that would be better served acting as a parachute for an elephant.\" That one, at least, was hard only because she couldn\'t laugh in front of either of them about it. Then the break in. It still mystified her. In broad daylight, the front door had been blown off it\'s hinges and the entire house looked like a hurricane had hit it and no one saw? Something was going on, here, and she intended to find out what.

She was broken from her reverie by a yelp outside. Frowning, she looked out the window to see a man standing over a dog with a wand drawn. She rushed to the door and stalked out to the man. \"Hey, what do you think your doing?!\"

He looked coolly up at her, not moving his wand an inch. \"I suggest you stay out of this, miss. This is between me and the dog.\"

Bryn shook her head and moved closer to the pair. \"No. I don\'t know what she did to you, but I can\'t just stand by and let you abuse an animal. Move your wand, now, please.\" He regarded her for a moment, and Bryn pulled out her badge. \"Fine, I\'m an Auror and I will make sure you\'re arrested if you harm her.\"

Straightening, the man put his wand in his pocket and sneered. \"Very well. I hope she gives you as much trouble as she\'s given me over the years.\"

Bryn scowled as the man walked off and looked down at the dog. Lying on the sidewalk, apparently unconscious, it appeared the man had already hurt her. Sighing, she gathered it into her arms and went inside.

Lying the dog down on a bed she\'d made out of blankets, Bryn inspected it. The dull black fur was matted and quite dirty, she could feel how much her ribs were sticking out, and there were cuts on all four paws. Sighing, she decided the fur could wait, but the other two needed attention.

Going to the kitchen, she pulled out some leftover stew and filled a bowl with water in case her new charge woke during the night. Standing over it, she shrugged. \"This will have to do until morning, sweetie. Sorry I don\'t have anything better for you than my attempts at cooking.\" she said regretfully as she put the two bowls down, she walked around the dog and lay on the couch to sleep.

Padfoot opened his eyes, and lifted his head. Food, he could smell food nearby. Sniffing, he eyed his surroundings warily. A couple of chairs, a fireplace, the opening to a kitchen, and a couch with soft breathing sounds coming from it, obviously someone asleep. Hmmm.... no place he\'d ever been before. Getting up, he whined as pain shot through his paws and limped over to the food dish.

It wasn\'t long before he was licking the bottom of the bowl and wishing for more. Starting on the water, he heard an alarm clock go off somewhere upstairs. Lifting his head, he eyes the sleeping form on the couch warily. Should he trust to luck and hope this person wouldn\'t recognize him, or should he try to leave the house before they woke?

Luck seemed to work more often than not for him, so he went over and softly woofed at the couch. Stretching, the person\'s eyes opened up and she smiled at him. \"Hey, girl. What do you want?\" Sirius wagged his tail when she scratched his head and she sat up. \"Ugh, I\'d better stay home with you today. You need some attention and I don\'t want a dirty dog messing up my furniture. They\'ll understand, I hope. This would be the first time I\'ve ever taken a day off, so it shouldn\'t be a problem.\"

Lying back down on the pillows, he watched her go over to the fireplace and floo someone.

Apparently, it wasn\'t a problem because she came out smiling. Getting herself some breakfast, she smiled again when she saw the state of the bowl of stew. \"Well, at least SOMEONE likes my cooking. I can\'t get anyone else to eat it.\" Padfoot nudged the bowl and she picked it up. \"Alrighty, breakfast for two.\"

Watching her make eggs, Sirius listened as she rambled on about her job (she was an auror), her family (her brother was currently doing some field work for an experiment in Jamaica) and how she needed to fix a couple of leaky pipes in the upstairs bathroom.

A door closed somewhere to his left and he sat up, ready to run if need be. The woman didn\'t notice and continued to talk as a tall blonde walked into the room.

\"Bryn, who are you talking to?\" she asked, a mix of confusion and humor on her face.

Looking up, Bryn grinned. \"My new puppy. I found her last night.\"

Staring down at him, the blonde looked as if she\'d swallowed a lemon. \"Puppy? It looks like a mangy old mutt to me.\" Sirius slumped down on the ground and put his head on his paws.

Bryn frowned at her and put the eggs on a plate. \"Hey, I can call her a puppy if I want to. Besides, once I get her cleaned up and groomed, she\'ll look every bit as good as those prissy little dog-wannabes that you like to carry around, Beth. And don\'t look at my dog that way.\"

Beth drew herself up and an indignant look crossed her face. \"My dogs are not prissy! They happen to be purebred Pekinese and they look absolutely adorable in their carrying case.\"
Smirking, Bryn put a big pile of eggs in front of Sirius, who perked up and began eating again. \"It\'s a glorified granny purse, Beth. And your dogs, if you prefer not to call them oversized rats, look as if they\'re waiting for your attention to slip so they can escape the wretched form of torture you put them through. Do you want to eat?\" Beth shook her head. \"Ok, well then, I\'m going to be rude and eat in front of you because I\'m hungry.\"

Shaking her head, Beth crossed her arms. \"Don\'t try to change the subject, Bryn. It\'s NOT a granny purse, it\'s a carrying bag specifically for dogs and they love it. Besides which, you\'ve gone bonkers if you\'re going to keep that dog.\"

Looking up from her plate, Bryn swallowed. \"Oh? Why\'s that?\"

\"Because, you don\'t know how to take care of a dog. Not to mention, you\'ve never really liked them, your mom is allergic to dog hair, and you\'re never home.\"

Shrugging, Bryn took a drink of orange juice. \"I can take assignments close to home, my mom not coming over is a good thing, and dog\'s can\'t be too hard to care for or else you wouldn\'t have five.\"

Beth tsked. \"Fine, keep it. You\'ll find out that I know what I\'m talking about soon enough.\" Turning to go, she looked back and smiled. \"Oh, and by the way, genius, your dog is male.\"

Whipping her head around to Sirius, Bryn studied him for a moment before looking back at Beth. \"He prefers to be called, \'estrogen challenged!\'\" Laughing, Beth left.

Clearing the dishes, Bryn turned an apologetic smile on Sirius. \"Sorry about that, I guess I should have looked before I called you a girl. Now,\" she said, rubbing her hands together, \"time for your bath.\"
