Rubeus Hagrid ran a finger gently over the silken petals of the flowers he had picked. He used a pink ribbon to tie them together. He looked at them with a sigh and tucked them into one of the pockets of his shabby coat. He knew what he wanted to do with them. But was not sure how the gift would be received.
It was so confusing. Things had really been going well last night, then suddenly, everything had gotten all bollixed up.
He had gone up to the Great Hall for supper, a bit late, but still within the time that the elves served the meal. Since it was Saturday evening and most of the students and staff were still in Hogsmeade it was quiet. Headmaster Dumbledore had ordered up some butter beers for the few staff members present.
Hagrid usually like something a bit stronger, but he was certainly not going to say no. He had been about to sit in his usual place when he noticed Professor Snape. It was not odd that he was not at Hogsmeade, Dumbledore did not often make him take that duty.
The headmaster would only say that Professor Snape had other duties at the school.
What caught Hagrid\'s eye was the way Snape looked. Most times, the Potion Master reminded him of at hedgehog. Always curled up in a ball with his spikes sticking out to keep everyone at bay.
But for once, he was not acting prickly, or looking like he would rather snap the head off the next person that came near. He was sort of slouched, not looking at anyone; yet, there was something strange, sad in those lovely black eyes.
Taking his butter beer as well as his life in his hands, Rubeus Hagrid walked over and sat down in the chair beside Severus Snape. \"Ya alright Sev\'rus?\" he asked, then braced himself for a snarl.
\"Fine,\" the reply was soft, perhaps slightly distracted. No growl, no glare, nothing, just an almost whispered, \"fine.\"
\"Good.\" Hagrid had answered, almost shocked at the non-threatening response. \"Oh, Professor Dumbledore said ya were lookin\' fer some wiggen weld bark for a healing potion. Found a right nice patch o\' the stuff near the lake this mornin\'. Kin get ya some if ya like.\"
\"Yes,\" he replied, \"thank you, Hagrid.\"
No stiff, abrupt response, and those deep black eyes glanced at him almost shyly, then looked away. Hagrid\'s heart began to pound in his chest. Was Professor Snape flirting with him?
He certainly hoped so!
Most people called the Head of Slytherin a snake, or even a bat. To Rubeus Hagrid, he always was reminded of a cat. Sleek, beautiful, stalking through the school with such grace.
The half giant had spent many a long night in his large, very lonely bed, thinking of how he would stroke that sweet pet. Oh, he wanted to rub his tummy, and well, other things.
\"That bottle be empty. Let me get ya s\'more.\" Hagrid offered. Snape gave him another of those almost painfully shy looks, and nodded. Walking on air, the Care of Magical Creatures Professor quickly moved to get another bottle.
Things were going well. They continued to talk, even after the rest of the staff and students left. Hagrid had been encouraged when he had told Severus that he wanted to get to know him better, and the other man had actually smiled.
Then it had gone wrong.
Emboldened by the positive responses from Severus, Hagrid had touched him. Ran a hand along his arm. He wanted to invite the Potion Master to his hut, maybe share a slightly more potent drink.
Severus Snape\'s face had flushed bright red, and he stammered something about a potion that needed stirring. He had all but run for the door, leaving a very confused and saddened Hagrid. Why had Snape panicked so?
Maybe Hagrid had misread him. Maybe he only saw what he wanted to see in those shy looks?
He was still mulling over the events of the evening as he strode from the edge of the forest back to his hut. But as he turned the corner of the old hut his heart almost stopped. The object of his attentions was standing on his front step. The man looked from the door of the hut back to the castle, obviously torn between knocking on the door, and running back to the dungeon.
What if he decided on the dungeon?
Well, it was now or never. \"Oh, \'llo Sev\'rus! \'ow long ya bin waitin\'?\"
\"Oh... I just got here.\" Severus was blushing. \"I, uh...\"
\"Would ya like ta come inside?\" Hagrid asked, trying to keep his voice even, hide his excitement. Maybe he was getting another chance, but he needed to be careful, take it slowly.
\"Uh, yes.\" Hagrid was elated when Severus followed him into the house. He tried not to let his excitement show. He attempted to keep things low key, but then the object of his attentions presented him with a tiny kneazle kitten. He could not contain the joy as he lifted the purring kitten and rubbed the sleek fur against his cheek.
He almost did not realize that Severus was trying to get away. The skittish Slytherin was about to make a run for the castle!
With a smile, he remembered the flowers. Looks like he would get to deliver them after all.
Severus looked utterly lost staring at the greenery the half giant placed in his hand. Hagrid considered, then rejected several more subtle options then decided to try direct action.
\"Ah got somethin\' else for ya, if ya want.\" Still hold the kitten in one hand he moved closer, then used the unencumbered arm to bring Severus into a kiss. He felt the other man\'s arms go around his neck as the kiss was answered.
Rubeus Hagrid reveled in the feel of that long lean body against him as Severus whispered that he thought he was mistaken. \"No mistake,\" assured Hagrid. He used his free arm to hold Severus more tightly against him as he planed what he would do with his two lovely new pets.
First he would take care of the little kneazle kitten. She was just a baby after all. Hagrid would wrap her up in a nice fluffy blanket near the fire, and pour her a little tasty cream.
Then he would carry his other lovely sleek kitten to his bed and stroke him till he purred.
