Chapter 1 - Trading Faces
All the students had arrived and had been sorted into various houses. The staff and students alike were waiting for their Headmaster to make his annual welcoming speech. As he rose and began his speech, one of the staff was lost in deep thought. Severus Snape, Potions Master and head of Slytherin house was watching the new Defence Professor with great intrigue. She was a woman of slightly large proportion. There was something about her that got Snape. Most new Professors had the decency to at least pretended to be nervous about their new job. This one however, did appear to be twitching an awful lot in her seat, but she was not twitching through nerves. It came across that she was dying to speak. \'Impatient Wench\' thought Snape \'Probably a Granger type person, wanting to prove her worth\'
Snape came back to attention as soon as Dumbledore mouthed the words \'..Introduce Professor Umbridge, our new Defence Against the Dark Arts teachers.\'
If Umbridge\'s bright pink cardigan, with matching alice band failed to send eyebrows rising, her next actions certainly did. The woman had now begun to stand on her feet and began staring out at the hoards of students gaping at her. More incredulously Dumbledore had seated himself back down and was watching her with intent. Snape eyed her with an expression of dumbfoundment. This was a new approach to the year. He almost gave a visible reaction when she had stated that it was good to be back at Hogwarts.
He was also reminded of Gilderoy Lockhart, when she had mentioned all of the smiling faces around. He snorted softly as he took into account the amount of smiling faces around. Only hers happened to be the one sporting a smile. Snape\'s snort cost him a futile stare from Professor Sinistra. He ignored his colleague’s stare and carried on watching the new Defence Professor with amusement. Clearly this woman was in denial. Smiling faces indeed.
Apparently like Lockhart she liked the sound of her own voice. She carried on warbling for several minutes. Unlike Dumbledore and a few of the staff, the students had started conversing amongst each other. Snape studied the students for a moment; it came to no surprise to see that the Granger girl was taking in every word that Umbridge was saying.
Finally Umbridge\'s declaration of changes around Hogwarts came to an end. Snape clapped twice, like many of the staff out of politeness. Dumbledore was then allowed to carry on with his normal routinely speech. The rest of the welcoming feast went without incident. Well, unless you count the Umbridge woman staring at Snape. Snape caught her eyes as he looked across the table. Not wanting to back down he stared back at her. She had a strange expression across her face. What was it? Did she know something that he didn\'t? No couldn\'t be. Snape dismissed this idea. What could a woman know?
Her expression changed slightly as the minutes wore on. Her expression changed from strange to almost scary. She was now smiling at him. Snape let down his guard and shuddered at her smile. How he wanted to look away, but his pride wouldn\'t let him. He was not going to back down to a female with a horrendous dress sense. He felt a cold sickening feeling sweep across his body. He tried to ignore it and intensified his stare. Umbridge was unmoved by his new tactic. Instead of looking away, she - much to his horror - started to lick her lips. Snape was saved the thought of anything else, when Minerva McGonagall interrupted the war of expressions.
\'Severus, May I have a word with you after dinner?\' McGonagall asked, with a hint of exasperation in her voice. Snape merely nodded and then looked back at Umbridge. Umbridge had now finally turned to her own dinner.

After dinner had finished, Snape looked towards McGonagall, who in return nodded. Both Professors removed themselves from the table and walked out the door. They got down the corridor and McGonagall, motioned for them to enter an empty classroom. Once the door was shut, she turned round to face her colleague.
\'Now Severus, I realise you wanted the post but-\' Minerva started, but Snape interjected.
\'Minerva, I don\'t want to hear how your awfully sorry that once again I never got the post\' He countered with a sweetly sarcastic tone his voice. His eyes were glaring at her, showing that he was annoyed about the subject. Minerva rolled her eyes and carried on.
\'As I was about to say Severus, I realised you wanted the post and I want to warn you to behave yourself this year-\' She stopped to look at the speechless figure that was Snape \'-Umbridge will be poking around, in all area\'s. She is not to be messed with. So don\'t upset her!\'
Before Snape could respond McGonagall had stalked out the room, shutting the door behind her. After collecting his thoughts together, he too set off out the room.

As Snape entered the Staff room, he could have sworn he felt a pair of eyes watching him. He shook his head and put it down to a stressful day. He stalked over to his favourite seat by the fire and picked up the book he was reading earlier in the day. He was half way down page fifty-six when again; he could feel two eyes watching him. He turned around to find Albus Dumbledore, smiling at him. Severus glared at the older wizard and turned back round to carry on reading. Why he had assumed that those eyes had belonged to that Umbridge woman was beyond him. Why would she be staring at him any way? She disturbed him at dinner, but that was no reason to be paranoid about her. Snape snorted at the though of him being paranoid. Maybe he should consult Moody on such things. Though the idea of walking around with a hip flask was ridiculous, so maybe Moody should be left out of it.
Again, he could feel eyes boring into the back of his head. Again he turned round to see Dumbledore. It took a lot to refrain from grabbing the old man round the neck, for being so damned infuriating. On the third time, Snape slammed his boom down and spun round to face a grinning Dumbledore.
\'What?! What is making you grin at me so?\' Growled Snape.
\'Oh something miraculous, my dear boy’ Smiled Dumbledore, Snape raised his eyebrows.
\'Which is?\' He asked Dumbledore in a bored tone.
\'Have you no complaints about our dear Dolores Umbridge? Usually you storm into my office to vent your anger at being overlooked. I missed our usual get together, in which you yell and I eat lemon drops\' Snape glared at him and expressed his opinion that, he no longer cared. After he declared this to the Headmaster he turned around again, in a vain attempt to actually get to read some of his book.
Once more, he felt a pair of eyes upon him. This time though, he had really had enough of this. He refused to give into Dumbledore\'s silly mind games. Now was not the time for it. All he wanted to do was be left alone with his book. After a few minutes, he heard footsteps behind him. At last he thought, he was now on his own. Now fully concentrating on his book, he reached a peaceful mood. He failed to notice the figure coming up behind him. He, however, did not fail to notice the pair of hands coming from behind him and placing themselves on his shoulders.
The hands belonged to a woman. They had bright pink nail varnish on and were working their way further down Snape’s chest. He gulped and put his book down. Time seemed to stand still. Eventually, he heard a quiet whisper in his right ear.
\'Hello Severus. I felt that we should get more acquainted with each other\' Came the soft, sickly sweet tone of Dolores Umbridge. Snape pulled her hands off him and stood up Quickly. As he stood trying to compose himself from the shock, Umbridge smiled at him. Before he could say any thing, she started pacing backwards and forwards.
\'You see Severus, I have noticed you. I saw you at the staff table. You give off an air of respect. I like that in a man. Then you saw me glancing in your direction. I could have been looking behind you, but oh no. You instantly assumed it were you I was looking at. Arrogance isn’t attractive placed in the wrong person. It suits you. Yes it does\' Umbridge whispered in a barely audible tone. Severus wondered what Albus hoped to achieve by hiring a crazy woman. Insane. The woman was insane.
Umbridge approached Severus, who was too shocked by her announcement to move. They were barely apart when she reached her hands to his face. She stroked his cheek and then gave a, what he thought was meant to be a seductive smile. The smile then turned into a wicked grin. She removed her hand and started to walk off. Turning for one last time and looking at the Potions Master.
\'You don\'t want to get on the wrong side of me Severus’ were her last words upon leaving a very stunned and mortified Potions Master.
