Chapter !:
Melody walked through the library silently as she searched for a particular book. She looked at her watch and it glowed the number’s 1 am. Sighing she continued further on her search. When she stopped to pull a book from it’s shelf she heard light noises coming from a corner hidden by a book case.
She silently peeked around the corner and almost gasped when she saw Draco Malfoy huddled in the corner shaking and crying softly. She saw the bruise’s and cuts on his face and neck. She felt her heart go out to this young man who had always seemed so strong and immovable. ‘Something happened,’ she thought as she took a step closer. She kneeled down and placed a hand on his shoulder. She pulled her hand back when he jumped in fright at her touch. His black eyes focused on her through his platinum blond hair.
“Draco? Are you ok?” she whispered as she saw the relief in his eyes.
He turned away and looked down at his hands. She saw the cuts and blister’s on them and knew that someone had done this to him. She reached out and encircled his wrist gently with her hand. She held fast when he tried to tug away and pulled him until he turned toward’s her.
“It’s all right Draco. Your safe with me,” she whispered when he stared into her sky blue eyes.
Her heart broke when she saw the tears flow again from his eyes. He wrapped his arms tightly around her waist and pressed his face into her chest as he sobbed uncontrollably. After getting over her shock she began rubbing her hand in circles on his back. She had never seen this side of him before. He had always seemed so strong and in control, and now she saw him in a different light. She still considered him strong even when he cried and rested her chin on his head.
She almost gasped when she saw the large bruise on the back of his neck as it disappeared under his shirt. She lifted the hem of his shirt and her eyes widened when she saw the large bruise covering his back. She dropped the shirt and with tears misting her own eyes she rested her cheek on his hair. ‘Oh Draco. Who could have done this to you?’ she thought.
She held him for several minutes before he finally quieted down. He lifted his head and leaned back to look at her. She smiled softly and brushed the hair from his eyes. He slowly withdrew his arms and sat back against the book case. She saw him wince as the wood touched the bruise on his back.
“You don’t need to explain anything. And I won’t tell anyone. But will you at least come to my room and let me clean those cuts?” she said softly, offering him her hand.
Draco nodded and took her hand. She saw him wince when he stood but she said nothing. Since she was the head girl this year she had her own set of rooms. She led him through the halls in silence and into her sitting room. He sat down on her sofa and waited as she brought some antiseptic and gauze to clean the cuts. She sat beside him and dabbed the gauze at the many small and medium cuts on his face. He winced when she touched the one on his lip and she stopped. His hand encircled her wrist and pulled her hand back to the cut.
“Please continue,” he whispered, staring into her eyes.
“Ok,” she said softly.
She soon finished his face and moved to the cuts on his arms. When she was finished she sat back and smiled at him. She frowned when she saw the bruises again.
“Would you like some ice for those?” she said.
When he nodded she took her wand and conjured up a bag of ice. She gave it to him and he pressed it against the bruise on his eye.
“If you want I can rub some liniment into your back. It will help it hurt less,” she offered.
“I don’t want you to see it,” he said stiffening slightly.
“Too late. I took a peek earlier. Now do you want some or not?” she smiled holding the bottle.
He nodded and slowly tried to remove his shirt. “Here let me do that,” she said when he hissed in pain.
She pulled the shirt over his head and down his arms. She frowned when she saw all the scars and more bruises on his chest.
“Here lie on your stomach and put this pillow under your chest,” she said softly.
“Melody, thank you,” he said before lying down.
Melody smiled and kneeled on the floor beside him. She poured some of the liniment on his back and began working it into his back. She saw him cringe and clench his fist as she gently rubbed his back. She soon noticed that after a few moments he sighed and closed his eyes.
She stifled a giggle when she heard him snoring softly. She wiped her hands on her pants and grabbed a nearby blanket. As she covered him with it she placed a soft kiss on his cheek and stood. Melody entered her bedroom and changed into her night shirt. She slid under the covers and sighed as she laid her head on her pillow and closed her eyes.
Melody awoke 2 hours later to the sounds of someone crying out. She rushed and opened the door. She heard Draco tossing and thrashing in his sleep and rushed to his side.
“Draco wake up. Your dreaming,” she said as she nudged his shoulder.
“Melody?” he said softly when his eyes focused on her.
“Yep your still here,” she said. “You were dreaming.”
“I’m sorry I woke you. I can go,” he said.
“I don’t mind if you stay. I can stay in here with you if you would like,” she said smiling at him.
“Yes,” he said smiling for the first time that night.
“Hmm the couch isn’t very big. Your welcome to join me in the bed if you want,” she said.
He gulped, nodded and followed her into the bedroom. She climbed back under the covers and padded the bed beside her. He removed his pants and climbed into bed wearing his boxers. He snuggled up to her side and they soon fell asleep with him in her arms.
The morning dawned bringing light into the room. Melody opened her eyes and blinked when she focused on a bare chest. Somehow during the night she had ended up snuggled against him with her head and upper body draped across his chest.
“Good morning Mel,” she heard him say.
“Good morning. How do you feel Draco?” she said lifting her head to smile at him.
“Much better thanks to you,” he chuckled.
“I am glad. Would you like to go to breakfast or should I have a house elf bring it here?” she said sitting up.
“I don’t want anyone to know I am here. So we should go down to eat,” he said.
“Are you sure?” she said.
“Yes, I can’t keep hidden until the cuts go away. It would take too long,” he said.
“Ya, I don’t think you want any professor’s honing in,” she chuckled.
“I better go get some clean clothes,” he said as he pulled on his pants. “Oh Mel, thanks again.”
Melody walked him to the door and he snuck out. She took a quick shower and dressed in an off the shoulder peasant blouse, hip hugger jeans and sandals. She braided her waist length black and red hair and headed down to breakfast.
“Hey Mel over here,” cried Ron waving at her.
“Hey guys,” she said as she slid in by Ron, Harry, and Hermione.
“Hey did you hear what happened to Draco?” said Hermione.
“No, what happened?” said Melody.
“His father showed up yesterday. He’s been disowned for not becoming a death eater. Now he is a ward of the school. Dumbledore refused to kick him out,” said Ron. “Though he deserved whatever he got.”
“What? Your saying he deserved to be disowned for not being a death eater? Geez Ron you’re a real pill,” growled Melody.
“Well no. But he deserves to be kicked out for being a real ass,” said Harry.
She was about to say something when the whole room went silent. Melody turned to see Draco enter and take a seat at a small table off in the corner. She noticed he sat alone and frowned.
“Oh great. They kicked him out of Slytherin. Now he will have to work to go to school,” said Hermione.
Melody looked from Draco to where Dumbledore sat. There eyes met and he nodded at her. She smiled and without a word took her tray and stood. She walked slowly down the aisles and walked over to the small table.
“Would you mind if I sat here?” she said when Draco looked up at her.
“Your friend’s won’t like it,” he said.
“I don’t care. I will sit by whomever I want to,” she said as she sat down next to him.
They sat eating in silence until the rest of the room went back to eating. As the others finished and were leaving, the head housekeeper walked over and sneered at Draco.
“Ok Malfoy time is up. You will be working in the kitchen today. If your late you will lose privileges,” he said.
“What about your classes?” said Melody.
“He does his work first than he can study in his free time,” sneered the man.
“It’s all right Melody. I won’t be able to become an auror anyways,” said Draco, standing and following the man.
The days trickled into weeks. Melody, busy with her classes and head girl work barely saw Draco. When he was able to join classes he always looked lost and lonely. No one ever spoke to him except the professors and her.
One cold November moring Melody came across Draco sitting alone in an alcove. She watched him as he scribbled in a notebook. She clenched her fists when she saw him growl and toss the book aside.
“What’s the use? I can’t even get caught up,” she heard him mumble.
“Draco?” she said walking over to him.
“What?” he growled, gasping when he saw Mel. “Oh sorry Mel. I didn’t know it was you. Can I do something for you?”
“No, but I think I can do something for you. If you will let me?” she said, sitting down beside him.
“I don’t think you could help me with anything. Besides I am a servant now,” he muttered.
“Not to me your not. To me you’re a friend,” she said, touching his hand and smiling.
“You’re the only one I have than,” he said, smiling shyly.
“Than the other’s weren’t true friend’s. Now will you let me help you study?” she said leaning over to look into his eyes.
“Yes,” he said smiling.
“Great, let me know when you have free time and we can study in my rooms. Eep I had better go or Snape will hang me,” she said standing.
“Thanks,” said Draco.
“Anything for a friend,” she said, kissing his cheek before taking off.
Melody and Draco set up a schedule and she began helping him catch up. They had once been in all the same classes so she kept him up on it all. This went on through the middle of December. Just before christman she received an oql from her parents. They had decided to go on vacation and she was to remain at the school. She found she was the only student besides Draco that were going to be at the school for 3 week’s. Dumbledore and Professor Snape were staying as guardians.
Melody sat in the great hall one afternoon reading when Draco found her. He walked over and smiled at her as he sat down.
“You seem happy. What happened?” she asked as he lay down with his head in her lap.
“I just came from Professor Snape’s office. I am no longer a ward of the school,” he answered.
“Really? But how?” she gasped her eyes widening.
“Professor Snape has become my guardian until I graduate in the spring,” he said giggling at the look on her face.
“He’s your father now? Wow that’s great Draco,” she said excitedly.
“Mel, I couldn’t have gone on without you here. You kept me from taking my life,” he said sitting up and looking serious.
“I am glad Draco. I would have lost one of my best friend’s,” she said smiling gently.
Melody’s eyes widened as Draco leaned toward’s her and pressed his lips to hers in a soft kiss. She hesitated only a second before putting her arms around his waist and kissing back. This gave him confidence and he deepened the kiss filling it with the many emotions swirling inside him.
“If you two are done I have some things to speak with Draco about,” said a deep voice.
Melody and Draco broke apart and turned blushing faces to Professor Snape. Draco stood and followed Snape out of the hall. Melody sighed, confused about what had just happened. She had never felt these feelings before and they shook her to her soul.
“Melody would you join me in my office please. There is something here for you,” said Dumbledore.
Melody nodded and sat down in a chair in his small office. He pulled a parchment from his desk and handed it to her. She read the outside and sighed.
“It’s from my mother and father. They say they won’t be here for Christmas or new years. So they sent me this gift,” she read.
Melody opened the small envelope Dumbledore handed to her and she opened it. She pulled out the deed to a beautiful 100 acre ranch in Scotland. Sighing she put it back in the envelope and stood.
“Another piece of land. Thank you headmaster,” she said quietly before she left.
“You would think they would know she doesn’t want the gift’s. She wants their attention,” said Snape stepping from the shadow’s.
“Yes,” said Dumbledore. “Come let us give her and Draco a Merry Christmas.”
Melody stayed in her room until dinner was served. She walked to the dining hall and was shocked when she saw a large Christmas tree in the middle sounded by gifts. Draco walked up beside her and was shocked as well.
“Come on in you two. We have a wonderful meal and gifts for you,” said Dumbledore.
Draco took her hand and they walked to sit down at a table with food. Snape joined them and Dumbledore. Melody sat in silence as they merrily talked and laughed. Earlier she had received another owl from her mother. Mel would be staying at her home alone for the spring break as well unless she stayed at Hogwarts.
“Why Miss Melody. What is wrong dear?” asked Dumbledore.
Melody stood and ran from the hall and to her room crying. Several minutes later Draco burst in to find her crying on the sofa. He sat down and pulled her into his arms and held her like she had held him so many months ago. When she quieted down he lifted her head with his hand.
“Melody?” he asked, tilting his head and smiling.
“Apperently my own parent’s should never have had children. They never want to be with me,” she whispered.
“I want to be with you Mel,” he said, lowering his lips to hers.
Melody felt the warmth and truth in his kiss and kissed him back. She felt the warmth seep into her bones until she was almost panting. Draco broke the kiss to breathe and smiled at her. He produced a small wrapped box and set it in her lap.
“I know it isn’t much. But this is my gift to you,” he whispered as she lifted it gently in her hands. “Professor Snape helped me to get it.”
Melody carefully undid the small bow and lifted the lid from the box. Inside was a small gold locket on a gold chain. She lifted it out and opened it to find a picture of he and her from an October festival. She looked up at Draco with tears of joy and smiled.
“Oh Draco, I love it,” she said, throwing her arms around him.
Draco encircled her in his arms and clasped the locket around her neck. She leaned back and grabbed a small wrapped gift from the table. She handed it to him and smiled.
“This is something I have been working on for awhile. Merry Christmas Draco,” she said.
Draco opened the brown paper to find a framed painting of him and her at the same festival. He ran his fingers over the dry paint and in the corner it said her name.
“You painted this? It’s beautiful. Thank you,” he said, his eyes shining with happiness. “It is the most wonderful gift I have ever received.”
“I am glad you like it. I wanted to give you something special because you mean a lot to me. I care very much for you Draco,” she said, looking down at her hands.
Draco lifted her chin to look at him and smiled. He set the picture on the table and pushed her gently back on the sofa. He stretched his body over hers and captured her soft lips with his.
