A/N: One Shot. It\'s up to you who he\'s with. I was originally setting out to write Sev having an insightful conversation with himself on his relationship with Harry, but apparently my muse didn\'t like that idea. So, I had Harry in mind for this role, but, really, that\'s just me, it could be anyone.

Severus doesn’t quite know what this feeling is, but it seems to creep into him the way the morning’s chill creeps into the bone. It comes often, but he can’t name it if he tried. He knows there’s something for it.

Maybe it is the body next to him.

Oh, yes, this body.

He’s not sure why this body is in his bed. Severus often wonders why this =thing= is here when he wakes up in the dark. He has no recollection of how it gets there, or how he ever manages to remedy the problem.

But it’s there.

So he looks at it.

And the feeling creeps into him.

He would venture to guess who this body belongs to, but he fears more for the answer than the question.

Maybe it will wake up if he speaks, but he isn’t sure he’s ready for the horrible something he knows is coming.

Severus steels himself and puts a hand on the cold shoulder of the body. The head it is attached to turns toward Severus with closed eyes and blank expression.

He knows who it is. And like a sudden typhoon, his world erupts into utter chaos as the closed eyes open and there is nothing but two equally deep and soulless voids staring back at him.

The lips curl up into a menacing grin that reveal sharpened teeth unbecoming of any human.

Severus screams and the body animates and crawls toward him with stocky movements that the living simply cannot make.

Just as the travesty of a living human reaches him, its fetid mouth forms the words Severus most dreads to hear:

“I love you Severus, I’ll never leave you.”

Then his world is black and silent for moments while his heart thuds in his ears and the adrenaline rushes through his veins. He realizes he is awake, and takes in a shaky breath before opening his eyes and seeing that he is well and truly alone in his bed.

He untangles himself from his sheets and puts on a dressing robe. The fire is still crackling merrily in his living room when he arrives, and sits in front of it.

On the table to his right is a small list of casualties, and his eyes scan over it several times, always coming back to the name of his lover.

He shuts his eyes tightly to forget the dream that has haunted his nights for years.

Five years since the Final Battle. Five years since his lover fell. Five years since his lover uttered those words here, by the fire, in confidence that they were true.

“I love you Severus, I’ll never leave you.”

He begins to shiver as the morning chill slowly creeps its way to the bone.
