Through the Sorrow and Carnage...

Prologue.

“Let my will be done,” Severus intoned gently. Harry, Hermione, Ron and the professor stood silently in front of the Veil, in the Department of Mysteries inside the Ministry. They did not ask why or how Snape had come to the conclusion, it bothered Harry to no end however. If Snape wanted to bring Harry’s beloved godfather back from the Veil, he wouldn’t quibble about the why’s or how’s, he would do all he could to help him. Snape extracted a vial from his voluminous black robes, and held aloft, so that the reddish fluid cast a red sheen on their faces. He uncorked it to let it breathe, his gaze never leaving the scarlet hue as he asked quietly, “Have any of you ever read Romeo and Juliet?”
“I-I have professor,” Hermione quietly stuttered. Snape smiled kindly at her, “You do remember the draught she ingested that made everyone believe she died?”
“Yes, professor.”
“Well, this is that same potion. Only this,” He inched his arm up, raising the vial a fraction higher, “Will bring the drinker so close to death, that he or she, could successfully walk through the Veil and back, but only a short time. Spend too long a time in there, the portal between the world close, and you will be lost.”
“But how are you going to come back?” Asked Ron, clearly misunderstanding that he was here with his Potion’s master. Harry tried no to laugh as Snape rolled his eyes in exasperation, “Mr.Weasley, I know you think my class is a waste of time, but I dearly hope that at least some of my teachings managed to seep through the heavy layers of Quiddtich and young Hermione in your mind long enough for you to know that you should never take a potion, be it dangerous or benign without having its antidote with you.” he reached into his other pocket and displayed the very vial he was talking about, waggling it in the sir to emphasis his point. He sighed, then gave it to Hermione. He nodded at her, she at him, and drank the potion as one would do a shot.
His shoulders immediately slumped; his eyes slipping almost shut. It looked as if he was sleep walking as he made his way up to the dais, hardly breathing at all. Harry’s heart beat faster as the constant whispering grew in volume. The veil fluttered with a slight breeze that wasn’t present in the room, reminding Harry of the first time he was here. Hermione gasped as Snape pulled back the curtain to reveal the other part of the room. “Seems a little anticlimatic, doesn’t it?” Ron said, being immediately shushed by both Hermione and Harry.
To Snape, however, he saw a place filled with a dense fog. Every now and then, he saw the silhouette of a person, but couldn’t recognize them. He heard whispering all around them, but couldn’t differentiate between the many conversations. The sound of barking behind him caught his attention. As he turned, he saw a great shaggy dog bounding up to him. He kneeled as the dog came closer and stopped in front of him.
“You’re going to be very weak and nauseous when you get out of here, I have some things you’ll need to take, but you are going to have to trust me.” He smirked at the whine he had received and stood. He walked back towards the Veil, knowing the unusually hyper-active animal would be following him, albeit warily. He paused halfway to the barrier, feeling the pull in his chest and the weakening in his limbs. If he stayed any longer, he would most assuredly die behind the Veil, as some people before him had done. He was very lucky that Sirius was the smart type, staying around the place he had fallen in for some time now, or the Potions Master would have been able to find him.
They made it through, Sirius pulling him by his sleeve. Severus lost the breath in his lungs, time passing quicker out of the Veil, his was dying at a rapid rate. He fell to his knees as Sirius, still in dog form, layed own on his stomach on the cool stone floor. Hermione uncorked the vial and shoved it into his clenched hand and he hurriedly drank. He stayed on the floor until he could lift his head without feeling the effects of vertigo. As he stood, he sought out Sirius, who upon seeing the other man, shifted. He curled around his stomach, his head in his hands and shaking slightly. Being behind the Veil and not being dead had taken a major toll on him, shredding pounds off his already malnourished frame.
“Children, I need you to get back to Hogwarts as fast as you can,” intoned Severus as he held up his hand at the protests, “Sirius and I have to get to a safe-house; mind you, he is still wanted, both the Ministry and the Death Eaters would like a piece of him right now. Go.” Amidst grumbling, and Harry taking a last look of Sirius for the time being, they left. Snape knelt down in front of Sirius and looked him over.
Sirius’ head lifted and locked gazes with Severus, “I-I saw-”
Snape nodded, “I know. I’ll need you to pretend. They musn’t know. Especially Harry, not yet.”
Sirius sat up, and exhaled, “It’s going to be rather hard to do that , I hope you know.”
“I know that.”
“You owe me.”
“Big time.”
