He grabbed a hold of her arm and jerked her off the couch, making her teeth clatter together. She tasted the faint copper of blood, and tried not to spit the unpleasant taste from her mouth as she was pulled into the other room, the pressure on her arm nearly unbearable.
Suddenly he swung around and struck her full on the face, and her head rocked back alarmingly, the world fading for just a moment before coming back into focus as he struck her again. She blinked her eyes at him, her mind racing as she tried to remember what it was she had done to anger him so, but any thoughts flew from her head as he tossed her carelessly into the wall.
She hit it hard, her teeth biting hard down on her tongue, and the warm gush that came from her nose and into her mouth was now joined by more that issued forth from her tongue. She though absently that she might have bitten a some of it off, but as she sucked the blood gushing from it she realized it was still all there. He advanced on her, eyes blazing with fury for some wrong she had done, and she sunk in a heap on the floor, waiting.
He stood there, looking at her with a sneer. The time passed slowly, and it seemed to her as if everything was now moving in slow motion and the world had stopped on this one moment in time. And then it sped up again, and a foot connected with her side, and she bit back a moan as she curled more into herself. Her hands went automatically to cover her stomach, and his eyes flashed again, and he reached down and grabbed her hair, his fingers wrapping in the thick blond tresses as he pulled her easily from the ground so that she was facing him.
He spit as he talked, his hot, sour breath making her gag. \"Lies. All lies. That child isn\'t mine!\"
She quivered slightly, her whole body trembling in fear at what she thought he was going to do next, and she stammered out a response, hoping she could assuage his anger enough that he spared the life growing inside her. \"It is, I swear it.\"
He drew his hand back and struck her, and her head rocked back and forth, his grip in her hair tightening. \"Do you honestly expect me to believe after the first two pups you pushed out that this third is mine?\"
She swallowed and looked at him, eyes pleading for some sort of release, and this only infuriated him more. He pulled her hair even more, and she could feel chunks of it being torn from her scalp and bit back another moan of pain.
Suddenly her ears picked up the faint sound of shuffling, and she turned her eyes as much as she could to where they issued from. She caught sight of blond hair, and gasped in a breath. He turned to where her eyes were focused and smirked at the child that now stood in the doorway to the room they were in. He loosed his grip on his wife\'s hair, and chuckled darkly as she fell to the floor in a heap.
The girls startling blue eyes were wide as she watched her mother fall to the ground, and followed her fathers tall form as he walked out of the room, sweeping past her without acknowledging her presence in the slightest. As soon as her father had passed out of sight down the hallway, she rushed to her mother\'s side and fell to her knees on the hard floor, taking a handkerchief from her pocket and holding it to her mother\'s nose to stem the bleeding.
The woman let the girl do as she would, and when it seemed the bleeding had stopped, only then did she speak, her voice hoarse and guttural. \"Narcissa, I\'ll be alright. You go now before your father comes back.\"
The little girl instantly obeyed, standing up and pursing her lips together in a small red bow, and without another word turned and walked from the room.
Only when she had left did the woman give in to the tears, and nearly choked with the force of them. She huddled in a ball on the unforgiving floor, body aching and heart trembling as she sobbed and clutched at her stomach, silently praying to whatever god would listen to let her baby live. It never crossed her mind to ask how long Narcissa had been standing there, or what she had seen, but it wouldn\'t have mattered anyway. It was too late.
