Summary: As the Dark closes in on Hogwarts as the Trio’s seventh year commences, their new teacher seems as cold as the enemies they fight and suspicions are high as Death Eaters swarm towns showing no mercy, merely an agonizing fate. Can someone who controls both life and death gain the trust of those that must be saved?
Chapter 1: Gentle Autumn Rain
“Don\'t stand beside my grave and weep,
For I\'m not there, I do not sleep,
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond\'s glint on snow,
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn\'s rain.
When you awaken in morning\'s hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush,
of quiet birds in circle flight,
I am soft stars that shine at night,
Don\'t stand beside my grave and cry,
I am not there. I did not die.”
-Melinda Sue Pacho
Cold silver drops fell onto the Hogwarts train in a soft patter as it sped along the tracks, steam pumping out of the engine in a choking white cloud. Inside one of the cars, the Golden Trio plus one sat, talking among themselves about something strange that they had seen.
“What are you talking about, Hermione?” Ron said, his arm around Luna, his new girlfriend. He and Hermione had broken up after she had revealed her belief that she was gay, and he and Luna had gotten together over the summer. There had been some jealousy in the beginning, but it faded quickly. They had a lot more important things to worry about.
“Every so often, a man in a black cloak walks down the car, looking in the window. But the second you see him, he disappears. If you open the door, he’s gone.” Harry raised an eyebrow. “Maybe he’s Apparating.”
“Probably. I just want to know what’s so damned important that he keeps on looking through our door.”
“Celebrity?” Everyone laughed but Hermione, who saw the man once more, and trembled at his frozen gaze.

As the students shuffled into the Great Hall, they looked up at the High Table for a glimpse of the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, if there was one. The last one, Professor Grimwen, had lasted a little more than half a year, before leaving, muttering about hexes and Dark Magic in the halls. Her replacement did not look so easily disturbed.
He had a resemblance to the Potions Master, in his icy stare, but his eyes were a pale grey, making him almost look blind. His black hair fell halfway down his back, the silky locks hiding half of his face. He sat between Professor McGonagall and Professor Snape, talking in between sips of wine.
“That’s him!” Hermione said in shock, looking up and remembering his eyes.
“Who, Hermione?” Harry said, looking for Draco in the mass of students flooding into the room.
Even though their relationship was secret, it was hard for him to hide his affection for the Slytherin boy. Of the few people that knew, they didn’t bother to explain it. Some of their hostilities had died down in 6th year, and a few months later, a 2nd year Gryffindor had burst into the Common Room, muttering that he had seen the two of them kiss. The boy had been laughed out of the room, but Ron and Hermione believed him, keeping quiet about their thoughts.
“The man I saw wandering on the train. It’s him I know it.”
“Don’t worry about it Hermione. If he’s the new teacher, he was probably just doing rounds on the train.” Ron said with a nonchalant shrug.
“Yeah, that must be it.” There was some doubt in her voice, but for now she would let the subject drop. No point in making her friends think she was crazy.
They sat down in their chairs, eager to eat after the long train ride. Dumbledore stood up, smoothing his robes and smiling. “Welcome students, newcomers and old, to another year at Hogwarts. For some it is your last, others your first, and others another step in your lives. I’m sure some excitement will conjure itself to compel you stay, as it always seems to do.”
After letting out a deep breath, the Headmaster continued. “I would also like to introduce our new Defense Against The Dark Arts Teacher, Professor Adrian Marcellus. I am quite sure he will have a little more luck than the others.”
The new Professor stood, holding his wine glass in both hands, looking out at the tables and the sea of students. He was certainly the youngest of the teachers, but such things didn’t bother him. His dark hair still covered the right half of his face, and he made no motion to move it. A small smile lit up his features.
“Thank you, Headmaster, for allowing me to teach Defense Against The Dark Arts. It is an often-sought position despite the…risk of assuming it. I plan to teach all of you how to protect yourselves from the Dark, even if it hides within these halls or within your hearts.”
With this grim words, he sat down, taking a final sip of his blood-red wine before setting down the glass. The smile on his face disappeared so quickly, it was if all emotion had been erased from his face, leaving a statue. The Headmaster took his seat as well with the words, “And with that, let us feast upon the wonderful feast that has been prepared!”
Mountains of food appeared on huge plates in front of the students, and everyone began digging in. Hermione chewed slowly, watching the new Professor as he refused every dish, asking only once for more wine. He was hiding something, but what was a mystery she couldn’t solve at the moment. Turning to her friends, she let her guard down and started eating at a quicker pace, not noticing as the cold grey stare of Adrian Marcellus watched her every move.

This chapter was very mild in content, but the whole of the fic will be darker and certainly have more of an NC-17 feel. Sorry for the slow beginning.
