Summary: A last visit on their would-be anniversary.

His hair, once his crowning glory, had faded to a dull gray. His reached his liver-spotted hands out and gently fussed away invisible dust. His voice was hoarse and gravelly, as decades rubbed together in his throat.
“I never dreamt it would be this way…that I would live this long without you.”
A smiled stretched and tightened his features, deepening the crevices and wrinkles that now covered his once youthful face. Eyes that had been dulled by time and hardship sparkled momentarily with the vibrancy that had long given up residency there.
“You know today is our 50th anniversary. I’ve missed you.”
Unfurling his arthritic fingers, he placed a single tulip on the browning grass. He shivered against the chill of autumn, his body unable to retain the heat as it once had. Standing, his spine slightly curved with age, his body hunched in on itself, as though warding off any possible onslaught of emotion.
“I still love you, you know. I promised you that I always would. This is the last time I’ll be able to visit you here.”
His eyes grew misty and his gnarled fingers brushed ineffectually at the tears seeping from his eyes.
“Farewell, my love…”
