PROLOGUE

“Lucius!” There was a banging on the door of Malfoy Manor. “Lucius!!” The shaken house-elf answered the door. There I stood, soaked by the rain, a bundle in my arms, and fear behind my eyes, undoubtedly.
“Dobby. Take her. Take her to Master Lucius. The note explains all.”
“But sir-”
“DOBBY! There is no time!” Dobby reluctantly accepted the tiny burden, light even in a house-elf’s arms. Kneeling quickly, I kissed the tiny bundle’s head. “My girl . . . grow strong. Grow safe.” As I left, Dobby shut the door with a dry click.
“Poor little Miss . . . Master Sevvy knows not where he has brought you . . .” I heard, but did not choose to understand. I did not allow that Lucius would do such a thing to you.
