Ch 1 - Changes
CHAPTER 1 CHANGES
Thanks to my beta Zephyr
Anything you recognise belongs to Joss Whedon & J.K Rowling
The reigning king & queen of my world!!
Still don\'t know what I was waiting for
And my time was running wild
A million dead-end streets and
Every time I thought I'd got it made
It seemed the taste was not so sweet
So I turned myself to face me
But I've never caught a glimpse
Of how the others must see the faker
I\'m much too fast to take that test

An arc of blinding light illuminated the dingy alley, a warm blast of air accompanying it, blowing rubbish and newspapers out into the street. A man wearing grey robes fell through it as if in slow motion, and crumpled to the ground in a heap as the arc disappeared and the alley was plunged once more into shadowed moonlight. A car backfired in the distance and the man jumped, clamouring to his feet and looking around wildly, confusion, anger and fear etched on his rugged features. He raised his wand and muttered "Lumos" trying to get his bearings. Something was very wrong here, one minute he had been fighting Bellatrix Lestrange in the Department of Mysteries and trying to rescue Harry and the next thing he remembered was falling and landing in the alley.
"Harry" he whispered, the panic rising inside him. What if his godson needed him? What if he was still in danger? He tried not to panic too much, as he had seen Dumbledore enter the room minutes before he fell and knew that Harry would be alright now he was there, but he still needed to get back, to get away from here.
"But where the bloody hell is here?" he asked aloud to the empty alley. He looked one way, which was a dead end and then the other, which lead to the street. " this way then," he said, keeping his wand raised in front of him and headed out into the empty street.
He walked out into the street, taking in every detail in case he had to get back to the alley, and feeling of fear increased with every step. He did not recognise anything around him. He was not in London, he knew that much. The streets and houses all looked different, with wood sidings, wrap-around porches, and gabled roofs, nothing like the brick terraces he was used to. His body ached all over and he remembered that Bellatrix had hit him with a Stupefy before he fell through the veil, causing all his muscles to tighten.
He stopped suddenly in the middle of the deserted road. The veil. That was what he had fallen through. He had heard voices behind it while he was fighting. Whispered voices, calling him, and then as he fell, he felt their hands, pulling him in He had been afraid. Not afraid of the ghostly voices or hands as he was quite sure that they were not evil. No, he was afraid of dying. He had spent too long in Azkaban plotting a way to get out, to lose his life so early. He had just got his family back together again, Harry, Remus, the Order. He remembered silently, desperately begging for it not to be his time as the hands pulled him down. He tried to mentally convey to the whispering figures that he was needed on earth, that he was important in the upcoming war, that he was a champion for the side of the light. Then without warning, they suddenly let go and he fell straight through to the alley.
He came to the end of the street and found himself outside a set of old gates, which read "˜Calvary Cemetery'. He had just decided that he had experienced a close enough brush with death tonight to last him a lifetime, and began to walk around the outside of the cemetery wall when he heard a woman's voice shouting, sounding like she was in trouble. Without a second thought he was running back to the entrance and pushing the wrought iron gates open, running in the direction of the woman's voice. After all, Sirius Black was no coward.
~*~*~
"This has got to be the most boring town I have ever been in," the young woman sighed as she strolled through the graveyard. She walked like she didn't have a care in the world, dressed in a red vest, jeans and a denim jacket, she looked similar to all other young woman her age. She was not. "Hellmouth my ass," she scoffed as she effortlessly jumped six feet in the air onto the top of a particularly old sarcophagus and sat down cross-legged, as she lit a cigarette.
She had been in Cleveland for a little over a year now, and with the exception of training up the few recruits who lived in the area, giving pointers to a couple who were headed for England and the odd Vampire gang, she hadn't seen any real action.
"Centre of demonic activity, blah, blah, your very own Hellmouth to guard, blah, blah, you won't get bored here, very dangerous work, blah, blah," she recited in a very bad imitation of an English upper crust accent. "The only thing I'm in danger of dying of here is boredom," she snorted to herself, "and who builds a baseball stadium on a hell-mouth anyway. No wonder the Indians suck." She blew out a long stream of smoke and shook her head.
Buffy and the rest of the Scoobies were far away now. Giles and Willow had returned to England and began working with the covern. Buffy, Dawn and Andrew were in Rome, where Dawn was going to school and Buffy was taking some well deserved time off, with Andrew as her liaison to the rest of the slayer network, and Angel and his team, well she did not want to think about that just now, it was still too painful.
"And I'm stuck here, in the universe's most under active Hellmouth," she sighed again, closing her eyes, and then opening them quickly as she sensed the danger approaching.
"Hey baby, you looking for some action?" growled a voice from behind her.
She smiled to herself as she slid the stake from her arm holster. "And there was me thinking it was going to be a slow night," she murmured, sensing how many and where her adversaries were standing. She jumped to her feet and whipped around to stake the vampire who had been directly behind her. The six other vampires all stared at her for a moment in amazement.
"What's the matter guys, don't want to play now I've killed your little boyfriend?" she mocked, twirling her stake though her fingers as though it was a majorette baton.
They rushed at her, and she fought them off easily at first, until one of them blindsided her and kicked her legs out from under her. She gave an almighty yell as her head hit the hard stone and before she had a chance to get back on her feet, two of the gang were holding her arms and dragging her up. She smiled a little smile as they bought her in front of the vampire she assumed was the leader of the gang.
"So," he said in the same gravely voice that had first addressed her. "Those were some pretty fancy moves you put on just now. What's your name sweet thing?" She motioned with her head for him to come closer, marvelling at the stupidity of the average vampire as he slunk forward to her.
"My name's Faith," she replied as she used the two vampires holding her as leverage to jump up and kick the leader in the chest with both feet, causing him to fall off of the sarcophagus and elbowing the two who were holding her, in their faces. She smiled as the remaining three closed in on her. "Faith, the Vampire Slayer."
~*~*~
Sirius was running as fast as he could, but the graveyard seemed to go on forever. He suddenly stopped and smacked himself on the forehead with the palm of his hand. "For fucks sake man, use your head," he said in a exasperated voice as he tucked his wand up his sleeve and transformed into the big black dog that Harry had once seen and thought to be a Grim.
He picked up the woman's scent straight away, but paused before pursuing her. It was different to what he had expected to find. The adrenaline was there, but there was no fear, just"¦excitement? Whoever this woman was, she seemed to be enjoying herself; it was even turning her on a little bit. There was something else. She did not smell like a muggle or a witch, she smelt like something else altogether, but what was she? He ran off towards the scent, knowing where she was, and if his senses were not mistaken, she obviously did not know, what she was fighting.
He rounded a large tombstone and saw them there. Five vampires and a young woman, all fighting so fast he was having trouble seeing where she was. He charged in, scattering them every way and giving the woman a chance to run. She did not. Instead she continued fighting with them. Thinking that she was obviously not in her right mind, Sirius tried to block the way between her and the vampires, but the woman was super naturally strong and lightning fast. He just watched as she plunged what he had first thought to be a wand and now saw was a stake, into the chest of one vampire and turned her attention to the others before the first one had even turned to dust. Sirius did the best he could, pulling the vampires away from her so she only had to fight one at a time. But in all honesty he did not think she looked like she needed help. He watched as she dusted the last of them and jumped down to where he was sitting.
"Hey dog," she said putting her hand out for him to smell and then scratching him behind the ears. "What are you doing in a graveyard in the middle of the night?"
The stroking had momentarily distracted him as the man inside remembered how long it had been since he had felt a woman's touch. He stretched and transformed back. "I could ask you the same thing," he replied.
~*~*~
Faith jumped back and raised her right arm, stake poised for action. She had spotted the dog pulling the vampires away and figured that dogs could sense unnatural things and was just trying to help her. But now there was a man where the dog had been, and that man looked dangerous, not to mention the fact that he was pointing what looked like a small thin stake at her.
"Who are you?" she demanded, "And more the point, what are you?"
Sirius smirked. She had balls. "Again, I could ask you the same thing."
"I'll be the one asking the questions tonight Bud," she said, her eyes never leaving him "You're obviously not human, so I'm thinking demon." She raised the stake a little higher, to show that she had no problem killing him if that was what he was.
"I'm not a demon," he said without a trace of fear, "but I'm not exactly human either."
"Uh huh, me neither, but I'm still not letting you out of my sight until I'm sure you're not dangerous."
Sirius laughed, a deep, bark like sound. "Well, depending on who you ask, I may or may not be dangerous," he said with a humourless smile, "but, as to whether or not you're going to let me leave, I'm not sure you have a choice." With that he transformed back into his canine form and bounded off out with the woman chasing after him. He wasn't afraid of her, he could sense the good as well as the power, but there was something deeper in this woman, something darker, he felt it.
He had just doubled back, thinking he would surprise her from behind, when she leapt off of the top of a tombstone and tackled him to the ground. As he returned to human form he found there was a stake pressed to his heart and the woman sitting astride him. He was once again reminded of his long bout of celibacy from the female of the species, until she pressed the stake a bit harder into his chest.
"You better start talking big guy," said Faith with the superiority of someone who knows how powerful they are. "Name, address, occupation, whatever, just talk."
"I'm afraid that I can't tell you any of that, not until I know who you are and if you can be trusted," he replied, struggling to understand how he had been completely overpowered by this young woman.
"Oh no baby, it doesn't work that way. You see, when I have you trapped like this, I ask the questions and you answer them," said Faith simply.
Sirius lay there and weighed the pros and cons of telling her who he was. She didn't seem to be connected to the wizarding world or surely she would know who he was, after all he was the British Ministry's second most wanted wizard after Voldemort.
"My name is Sirius Black and I am a wizard," he said finally, searching her face for a sign of her next move. Her expression didn't change
"A wizard huh?" she said. Her years spent in prison and her suspicious nature had helped her to develop a sixth sense of when someone was lying. She just knew he was not. But she was still wary. "Okay then. So let's say that I believe you. You're British right? What are you doing over here?"
Sirius sighed, "I'm not sure to be honest with you" she gave him a warning look "Look, I'll happily explain what I know, but do you think you could let me up first."
She looked like she was considering it for a moment, then she climbed off, holding her hand out to help him up. He shot her a look that clearly said "˜I don't need your help' but when she raised one eyebrow at him, he smirked and grabbed her hand, pulling himself up.
"So you know who I am, but I don't know who you are, Miss?"
"Faith" she said, reholstering her stake.
"Well Miss Faith"¦" he began
"No, no," she cut in, "just Faith, y'no? One name, like Madonna?"
Sirius had no idea who Madonna was, but nodded anyway.
"So Faith, you didn't tell me why you were fighting vampires in a cemetery in the middle of the night," said Sirius falling into step beside her as she began walking through the grounds.
"Well Sirius, that's usually where and when you find them," she said with a smirk.
Sirius frowned "You know what I mean,"
"I do," she said, and turned to face him. "I'm a vampire slayer."
"You're the slayer?" he asked in surprise. In the wizarding world the vampire slayer was a myth. A muggle girl who had super powers, killed demons and rid the world of evil. Sirius had thought it was just a story, but having seen Faith in action, he knew that it was true. She was much to fast and strong to be just a muggle.
"No, I'm a slayer." He frowned at her again and she laughed, "It's a long story and I'm going to need a drink to tell it again. You look like you could do with one too. Coming?" she asked.
"Lead on Faith, vampire slayer," he said in a mock serious voice as they walked out of the cemetery and towards the town.
