Harry made his way to the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom. As he walked down to the classroom, he wondered what the new professor would be like. Professor Dumbledore had introduced her last night at the start of term feast. Her name was Reannen Greenup. He’d never quite seen anything like her before. She wasn’t tall, but he could tell that underneath her robes she was built quite solidly, unlike any woman he’d ever seen before, and as he was now 16, he was beginning to notice women. He began to wonder what her classes would be like. He remembered his five other Defense Against the Dark Arts teachers over the five years he’d been at Hogwarts, and could remember only two of them being useful. One was an impostor of a professor, the real Professor Moody had been locked inside his own trunk for the whole year, so he wasn’t sure if that one counted or not.
He walked into the classroom and saw that it was different than it had ever been under any other teacher. There were plants in the corners.. What kind of plants, he had no idea, and there was a table up front near the teacher’s desk that had a bunch of weird looking instruments upon it, one of them he recognized as a sneak-o-scope. He was just sitting down as Ron and Hermoine came through the door. He realized they were the first ones there. “So what do you guys reckon.. Is she going to be a nutter like the last one?”
“Clearly I hope you’re not meaning Professor Umbridge. She creeped me out.”
They turned around and saw their professor behind them. Harry looked like he’d been petrified. Ron however, thought nothing of it. “She was funny after she came out of the forest. Make a clomping noise and she got all wigged out. Hi Reannen.”
Their professor walked up to the front of the room and put her things down. She canned the room to make sure they were the only ones in there. “Ron, it’s Professor Greenup in class, and you’re Mr. Weasley. Best get used to it mate.”
Ron’s face and ears turned red, but Hermoine looked at her funny, “You two know one another?”
Ron looked at her, “Hermoine.. This is my mum’s friend.. Reaney, don’t you remember me telling you about her?”
Hermoine looked at her as though she were just recognizing her. “Oh- Professor Greenup. I’ve heard tons about you. It’s a pleasure to finally meet you.”
“The pleasure’s mine Miss Granger,” she said smiling.
Harry remembered Ron telling him t het her and Mrs. Weasley talking about their new teacher. Surely she couldn’t be all that bad if she was friends with Ron’s mum.
The rest of the class started coming in, and when they were all there, Reannen stood up at the front of the room. “Hello class.. As you all remember from when Dumbledore introduced me last night, my name is Professor Greenup. As you have probably well figured, I’m your Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, as Dumbledore said last night. I want to give you a bit of understanding as to why I’m teaching this job.. I realize that you’ve had quite a few.. Umm… how do I put this without disrespecting my fellow collegues…… a few not so useful teachers in this subject in the past. I hope that I’m not one of them. One of your teachers, Remus Lupin actually referred me to Professor Dumbledore. I didn’t actually apply for this job.. Dumbledore sought me out. I was a student here way back in the day.” She looked around the classroom and saw that the kids were watching her, intently. None of them seemed too bored, to her surprise, so she went on. “I suppose you’re wondering what makes me qualified to teach you Defense Against the Dark Arts. Well, I received top marks in all of my Defense Against the Dark Arts classes here as a student.. Both in my OWL and NEWT classes, and did well in Potions as well. After I got out of Hogwarts, I went on to university and received a degree in teaching, although this is my first real teaching job. Since then I’ve been tutoring students with their Potions and Defense Against the Dark Arts classes. I’ve even helped a few Hogwarts students, during the years when your teachers were.. Less than helpful. And with him being back in power, I am aware that now is the time for you all to learn Defense Against The Dark Arts. As for where you’re at in your Defense in the Dark Arts classes… since your last teacher was less than helpful, but, I’m aware that some of you,” she looked at Harry, smiling, “took it upon yourselves to learn things that would come up on your OWLS… excellent!! I just hope that I don’t bore you with things that you already know. Now… I’m afraid that I’ve been talking much too long. If you have any questions, please, don’t be hesitant to ask. And if I’m unable to answer them, I’ll either do my best, or point you in the direction of your answer.” She finished, smiling, feeling as though she’d been dronin fon forever.
She looked out into the faces of all the kids and saw that they were all impressed. She even saw one hand raise. “Yes.. Neville Longbottom, is it??”
Neville blushed. “Yes Professor.. I was wondering… will we get to use our wands in this class?”
Reannen looked around the room, and saw the look of wonderment around all the other kids faces. “Of course you’ll be using your wands. How could you defend yourself against the Dark Arts without your wands??” she smiled. “Excellent question Neville. Any others?”
She looked around the room as the students seemed to be looking at one another, with thoughts of questions on their minds, but weren’t asking anything. “Well, if that’s all then.. I have something for you all to do. I’m not one for assigning homework on the first day of classes, I remember how much I hated that when I was a student, but I’m afraid I’m unsure as to where you all are at in your studies.. If you would all please write me just a short little note about what you know, curse and hex wise and stuff… what you don’t know but would like to know.. And I’ll keep it in mind when I do my lesson planning. And if you all were to start now.. I’m sure you could probably get it done before class ends and turn it in, causing you to have no homework. So.. If you’ll all please get started on that. If you have any questions please let me know.”
She looked around the room and saw that all the students had pulled out a piece of parchment and were starting to write. Good… maybe I’m not so bad at this teaching thing after all. She was hoping that none of the students would ask her about her past here at Hogwarts. She was sure though that none of them know, unless they had parents that had been here when she was, but she was sure that they wouldn’t of told their children anything like that.
The bell had rang and she noticed the children putting their books in their bags and standing up. “If you’re done with your note, please bring it up and lay it on the front desk. I look forward to seeing you all again next class.” She watched as the students put their parchments on the desk and said goodbye and walked out. All except Hermoine, Ron and Harry.
She was somewhat surprised to meet Harry Potter. She knew about him, honestly who didn’t? but it was almost as though she were looking at James again, only with deliberate mistakes.
Harry caught her staring at him. “Professor, are you alright?”
She realized she had been staring and blushed. “Yes, I was just thinking to myself. You look so much like your father, but you defiantly have your mother’s eyes.”
Harry looked at her, “You knew my parents?”
“Oh yes. I played Quidditch with your father and knew your mother,” she said, nodding.
Harry looked shocked. “You played Quidditch?”
“Yes, I was a beater.”, she said, smiling. Harry’s eyebrows rose. She could tell what he was thinking. “Yes, I know there aren’t many women beaters, but I was one, and quite a good one.”
Harry smiled, thinking that this women was truly genuine.
“Reaney, mum wanted me to ask you if you’d come for Christmas.”, he asked, smiling at the woman.
“It’s Profr Grr Greenup Ron, and I’ll have to think about it.”, she said, trying to act stern, but Harry could tell that she was trying to hide a smile. “You all better get going.. Don’t want to be late for your next class.”
Hermoined looked at the clock, “Guys we still have to make it all the way down to the dungeons!!”
Professor Greenup looked at them with a look of distaste on her face. “Potions?? Ugh, I’m sorry. You’d better hurry, you really don’t want to upset Professnapenape. I’ll see you kids later.”
She turned around to gather her things and the kids left. She thought about them being in the dungeons and shuddered. She knew Snape could be downright vile to his students sometimes, having tutored a few of them. She had been helping students with learning Defense Against the Dark Arts since she had been struggling for a job during the summers between being at Hogwarts. Life hadn’t always been easy for Reannen. She grew up as a Muggle, with muggle parents, but in fact her real father was actually a wizard, but he abandoned she and her mum when she was around 2. Her mother met a man and remarried, and when Reannen was 11, she got her letter to come to Hogwarts. She had always been good at magic, her favorite subjects in school being Defense Against the Dark Arts and ons.ons. She was told in her 5th year that she should consider being an Auror, and seriously considered it, but when her 6th year rolled around, things came up that made her not able to become one. She shuddered at the thought of her 6th and 7th years at school, which had undoubtedly been her worst.
She took one last look around the classroom and couldn’t believe that she was back in this place teaching. She l to to tutor students, and had made a fair bit of Galleons doing so, but to actually come back to Hogwarts was beyond her. She had had enough of this place when she was here to last a lifetime. But when Dumbledore approached her, she considered her alternatives, which were slim, beings Voldermort was back. Everyone knew about her history and didn’t want to risk hiring her. She knew she’d be safe with Dumbledore. Although she told him she didn’t want him hiring her just to ensure her safety and the sweet old man actually laughed. He had told her that she had come highly recommended by a few of the children that she tutored and their parents. Also, he knew that she, having had a few encounters with actually fighting the dark arts herself, was perfect for the job. She had been worried that he was just saying this to be nice, but as soon as she was in the classroom, it came second nature to her.
She looked at the clock and realized that she didn’t have anymore classes for the rest of day day. She thought longingly of being abl go go to her room and write in her journal about her first days teaching experience.
