The infirmary. It’s quiet and dark at this time of night. All the beds are empty except one at the very end. In it lies Severus Snape; Potions’ Master at Hogwarts.

A female student enters the room. What is she doing up at this time of night? If you look closely you can see the Ravenclaw emblem on her school robes.

She walks straight to the professor and takes his hand. He is unconscious. Perhaps a coma? It looks like he’s been there a while; his muscles have atrophied from what you can tell.

Shhh, she speaks.

“Did you ever get that feeling that gestates in your heart and makes it cold? Well…that’s silly, of course you have, but did you ever feel utterly alone? You must have had Albus, or….maybe your Death Eaters.
“You made me feel that way, though, utterly alone. You made me feel safe at first. Safe, and more than a little mad for you, but you were lying to me. True, you never made a move in the wrong direction, or promised me a life of grandeur…but I thought it was worth more than that to you. I thought it would make sense for us to have a life together.

“Look what you made me do…\"

She sniffles, and her hand drops to her side. There is a long pause before she speaks again.

“It doesn’t matter now, thoudoesdoes it? I don’t think you’ll ever know how much I hurt, but I’ve taken lengths to ensure you suffer. Madame Pomfrey thinks you’ll wake up any day, but you’ve been here for a year. It makes me proud that I’m the only one who could ever bring you out. It makes my heart grow warm that you’re the weaker one now. But, Severus, don’t worry.”

She lifts a hand to his face and strokes it in a familiar way. She is smiling.

“I will take care of you, like you took care of me, but this time we won’t have to worry about messy endings. This way we can be together forever. Perhaps not with the quality of life that I expected, but things hardly seem to fit perfectly all the time.\"

She pauses again, looking sweetly at his gaunt face.

“I think you’ll be happy to know that when I graduate I’m going to apprentice at St. Mungo’s and then when enough time has passed I will petition for you to move there. Then we can be together.”

Her smile seems almost fanatic now.

“Then when I am too old to work, they might have forgotten about you and I can take you home with me. Of course you’ll die before I do, but I take satisfaction in knowing that I will be the only one at the end. Because, Severus, I know you didn’t mean what you said, and I forgive you. Maybe someday I’ll release you, and you can tell me for yourself how sorry you are.”

Her eyes are flashing in her dreamings. She places a kiss on his forehead quickly, turns on her heel and exits as quickly as she entered.

The infirmary is silent. The occupied bed is motionless.

Not even Albus Dumbledore knows what transpired this night. The only witnesses: the cold grey walls, and of course, whatever you are. But your time here is done. Too brief? Life is created and extinguished in the blink of an eye, and you were not meant to linger.

Farewell.
