Destiny

Part One: Destiny

Vren Cabrera sat in front of the Slytherin common’s fireplace. Propped in her lap was a book, an old book checked out from the library with crinkled pages and faded writing. The flames of the fire illuminated the words on its pages as well as her face; her soft features showing, the dim light revealing her unrestrained hair.

The common room had long turned silent, Vren was fairly certain she was the only one left. She leaned back in the plush armchair she was sitting in and closed her eyes, listening to the rain as it softly pattered against the window panes and the crackling of the fire.

When she opened her eyes and looked back down at her reading, she noticed a small roll of parchment stuck in the middle of the book. Confused, and yet intrigued at the same time, she unrolled it.

Turn around? What kind of message is turn around, she thought to herself, probably just someone playing a trick on me.

Rolling her eyes, she got up from her chair. And when she turned around…

“Merlin’s beard,” she jumped,” are you trying to give me a heart attack?”

Draco Malfoy smiled smugly, resting his hand on top of the armchair.
“Give you a heart attack,” he asked, cocking an eyebrow,” why would I want to do that? What point would there be in killing one of the most promising people here?”

“What are you playing at,” she asked him warily.

“I know what your parents are. You know it too. There’s no denying the reason they’re in Azkaban. Their blood runs through your veins,” he walked around the side of the chair,” you’reurebureblood, which I’m sure you already know. But what I don’t understand is this, you’re Pureblood, you’re in Slytherin, yet you hang out with that Mudblood Liana. Why?”

“Well, she’s my friend.”

“She’s not your destiny.”

“And how would you know what my destiny is,” she huffed.

“Your parents promised their first child to Voldemort, which would be you. I’ve seen you Vren. I’ve seen how you read about the Dark Arts in private. How you glare at Mudbloods,” he moved close to her, less than an inch away. His voice was barely above a whisper,” you know who you are. You know what you are. Don’t hide it.”

Vren felt his fingertips graze the side of her cheek. She stared at Draco blankly. Her mind was reeling, filled with foggy flashbacks of her childhood; her parents telling her she was special, that one day she would be called upon. She dismissed it as craziness. Azkaban had that effect on people. And yet…

“You remember that day in the toy store, don’t you,” Draco whispered softly, gently.

She nodded slowly as the memory crept into her mind.

She had been playing with a toy tiger. One that behaved much like a house cat, only stuffed. A small boy came up to her and sat down.

‘Hi,’ she said brightly. He looked to be about four, the same age she was.

The boy looked solemnly at her, then took her hand saying,

‘You are to be mine. You are my destiny.’

‘You’re weird,’ she replied with a giggle. She smiled at him, looking at his grey eyes, the bleach blonde hair-

Vren gasped, jolting out of the memory.

“It was you in the toy shop,” she said.

“Yes, we were meant to be with each other. My parents promised me to the Dark Lord as well.”

Vren took a step back.

“I’m confused. Why now? Why wait so long?”

“You know the answer to that. The Dark Lord has returned, he alive. I know you feel it in you.

And I did tell you. I told you many years ago. You chose not to listen.”

Draco took her hand and brought her close to him. Vren suddenly found herself unable to speak. She stared at him, into grey eyes that softened at the sight of her. He brushed her hair away from her face and in a matter of moments his lips were on her. A sensation exploded inside her, a sensation of wanting, needing him. Her legs felt weak; she gripped his arms to keep from falling and in doing so deepened the kiss.

When they parted it was as if she had no control over her actions. She kissed him back, wrapping her arms around his neck. It was like she had waited so long for this moment. Had she always felt this way? Or were these feelings coming because she knew the truth?

“Meet me at the edge of the Forbidden Forest tomorrow at midnight,” he whispered in her ear.

“I will,” she nodded.

He bade her goodnight, kissing her hand. She watched him disappear into his dorm. She picked up her book in a daze and headed to her own dorm. It was only later, as she lay in bed, that she realized Liana had been standing in a corner, watching the whole thing.
