Silk Stalkings
or “How Severus Snape learned to value women’s clothing”

Chapter One - Chemise Him for the First Time in Years

“You’re joking.”

“I’m not.”

“You must be,” Severus rebutted, his voice just this side of hysterical pleading. “Dear God, Albus, you’ve got to be.”

“Unfortunately, Severus, I’m not. It has to be done, and you are the best man for the job.”

Severus grimaced. “On the contrary, Headmaster, it seems that the best man for the job would be a woman.”

Dumbledore sighed as he glanced once at the surly-faced younger man sitting he che chintz armchair across from him. “They are expecting a man, Severus. It’s got to be a man. I don’t know how else to explain this to you.”

Severus mimicked Dumbledore’s heavy exhalation. “They are looking for a man, and yet they want this man to dress as a woman in order to speak to a woman, who is actually another man dressed as a woman.”

Dumbledore grinned widely, his blue eyes twinkling merrily. “Precisely,” he responded jauntily. “I knew you’d catch on eventually, you are quite an intelligent--”

“Oh please spare me the arse kissing, Albus. I still don’t understand why you want me for it. For pity’s sake, get Lupin,” Snape’s face melted into a sneer, “he’s much more believable as a woman. Or for that matter, find Potter. I know in your infinite wisdom, you’ll find him somehow. Talk him into it.”

“Well, Severus,” Dumbre rre responded slowly, “it’s actually more believable in our scenario if we had someone who was slightly more obvious as to their masculinity. And besides,” Dumbledore paused at great length before continuing, “it’s Harry that you’re being sent to rendezvous with.”

Severus had a prolonged bout of gape-mouthed staring before he questioned Albus. “What?” he asked, dumbfounded. “I thought you said that I was being sent to speak to a man who works in a club and lives life as a woman.”

“I did.” Dumbledore paused again, but Severus only watched, his mouth still hanging open. “As you know, Harry fled from our community after the downfall of Voldemort. My guess is that he simply couldn’t handle the guilt of causing death. But, in any case, he fled into the Muggle world. For months, as you know, we could not find him. And at long last, a member of the Order – whom, for reasons you will guess soon enough, will remain nameless – found him working in a club in Soho, living life as a man in … what is it called again? Ah yes, ‘drag.’ Apparently being in ‘drag’ – meaning dressing like the opposite gender – is common among certain populations of homosexual Muggle men.”

Severus howled with laughter. “Ha! No wonder he and Weasley were always sneaking off somewhere. So Potter is —” Severus chuckled derisively again, this time louder.

“Now, now, Severus,” Dumbledore chided, his eyes still twinkling just a tad, “Mr. Potter’s personal business is none of your concern. However, as far as I know, he simply assumed that role because of its insurance of anonymity. Harry is, as far as I know, only assuming this lifestyle for the purpose of hiding. Which is why we must find him and help him back to our world.”

Severus grumbled loudly, but Dumbledore continued, suddenly gravely serious.

“Severus, he is avoiding a great deal of pain, I realize, but he is also one of the greatest assets our world has.”
Snape said nothing to this proclamation. True, Potter had single-handedly taken down the Dark Lord, but only now, five years and a few months later, was the prominent limp Severus had acquired during the final battle starting to become indistinguishable. Severus had suffered greatly for his indiscretions as a Death Eater, and, at the final showdown with Voldemort, he had paid for it in blood. Potter, however, had gained a great deal of strength and protective qualities as a backlash of the last spell. Yes, Severus admitted grudgingly, Potter is important. But Severus didn’t have to like it.

“Now,” Dumbledore resumed after allowing Severus a moment of disagreeable reverie, “I have spoken with the owner of the club, and he has agreed to allow you to begin working as a new installation in the club. You will start working on off-nights for Harry, gaining information about him in his new life, and then you will be worked into his acquaintance so you can get closer and speak to him. I have also assigned you a liaison from the Order so that you may be more acquainted with the subculture you will be moving into and who will school you in certain motions and mannerisms that will make you appear more female.”

“Oh, Merlin, help me …”

“Now, Severus …” Dumbledore began, but Severus never found out what it was he had intended to say. At that moment, there was a series of tentative knocks on
Dumbledore’s office door.

“Come in,” he chimed brightly.

Hermione Granger moved tentatively into the room. She grinned as soon as the wizened old wizard came into her view. She hadn’t been in this office in nearly six years now, but she still felt a plummeting feeling as if she were a student who had misbehaved.

“Miss Granger, how enchanting to see you. How has life been treating you in the years since I’ve seen you? Pleasant and gentle I hope.”

Hermione smiled and opened her mouth to answer him, but Severus burst in.

“Oh for God’s sake, Albus, please. If this is really to be part of my humiliation, can’t you just skip the niceties and get right to it?”

Dumbledore, still smiling brightly, turned from Severus back to Hermione. His face got somewhat more serious, but still retained a bit of his good humor. “Well, Miss Granger, if you’ll excuse Severus and his brusque introduction of the situation, I’m afraid I did call you here with a certain agenda. Please, make yourself comfortable.”

Hermione settled herself in the soft armchair opposite Dumbledore and on Snape’s right side. The man still, after over five years of adult work with the Order of the Phoenix and higher study with McGonagall, had the power to intimidate her into nervousness.

She snuck a sideways glance at Snape, to which he growled loudly and practically leapt from his chair. She straightened quickly and faced Dumbledore.

“You have to be joking, Albus. First the completely ridiculous nature of this mission and now you are suggesting that I work with HER on a mission that is so …” he searched for a word that would reveal nothing, “delicate?”

Hermione felt much like a ping-pong ball, bouncing her line of vision between Dumbledore and Snape. Dumbledore sat serenely until Severus fied aed a string of muttered expletives. Finally, Snape looked back to the two of them – Dumbledore’s face completely bemused, Hermione’s utterly bewildered – and then regained his composure and sat down.

“Miss Granger,” Dumbledore began, “I have asked you here to serve as a liaison for an undercover mission as the last act of the Order of the Phoenix. I know no one else in the Order that I trust with a situation matter that is, as Severus put it, this delicate.”

Hermione glanced nervously between the two men and then back to Dumbledore.

“Of course, sir, I’d be honored to help. What is the mission?”

“Well,” Dumbledore began, “you will serve as a source of information and background for an agent who will be going into the Muggle world and assuming a role of a rather unique nature.”

“Oh?” Hermione asked. “How so?”

Severus groaned loudly. This is going to be a nightmare.
