He was lying spread eagle, suspended in a place where time and space were things to be manipulated, not obeyed. The sand felt warm and soft on his back. Overhead, the skies were devoid of light. There was an absence of sound, despite the wind caressing his skin, ruffling his hair softly, and drying the tears on his cheeks.

He rose slowly to his feet, and all he could see was the endless expanse of black sand – a blackness so absolute, an absence of light. The bleak landscape went on to infinity, or as close to infinity as makes no difference.

The air was heavy with a stillness that clung to him like moisture-laden mists, making his limbs heavy and his senses dull. He ran a hand over his eyes, trying to clear the dullness. His hand came away slick and wet, and he stared at his hand in shock – blood was oozing from the cuts on his palms, and his nails were torn and bloodied. He stifled a gasp, as the blood dripped down his wrist, soaking the cuffs of his shirt with crimson blossoms. And yet he could not feel any pain.

He staggered forwards, tripping over his feet aell ell face forwards on the soft black sand. A heavy weight pressed onto his back, rendering him immobile. His breath was laboured as he tried to haul himself to his knees, fighting against the unseen assailant.

A sudden pinprick of light appeared over his shoulder, but the light was quickly absorbed by the sand, sapping the energy.

“Last chance to change your mind, Malfoy,” the voice was cold, commanding. “Denounce Voldemort. Swear your allegiance to me.”

“And if I do?” he challenged, despite the pain.

“The question is, what if you’t,”’t,”

He gasped as strong fingers pressed against his throat. Fear and rage swept through him. He struggled against the stranglehold. “And you expect me to believe that you are the champion of the Light? You can’t fool me, Headmaster. I can see through your devious mind. You are the real enemy of the Wizarding world, not Voldemort.”

Blue eyes bore into grey like chips of ice. “Denounce him, or feel my wrath,”

“Never,” Lucius spat defiantly. He staggered to his feet. “I will expose you as what you really are, Headmaster. No matter how long it’ll take, I will tear your mask away, and we will spit upon your corpse.”

“So it has come to this, eh, Lucius?” Dumbledore’s voice was soft, menacing. His eyes glinted. Without warning he raised his hand, palm outwards. Lightning shot out of his fingers, engulfing the blond in a searing fire.

Lucius screamed as he was flung backwards. Blood oozed from the freshly opened wounds on his body. The pain was intense, it bore deep into his being, splintering his bones, boiling his blood. He gasped as the thick, metallic tang of blood filled his mouth. Thick, cold chains appeared from nowhere. It coiled around him, shackling him face downwards to the ground.

Dumbledore looked down his hawk-like nose impassively at the student. He lifted his hand again and Lucius’s robes combusted in a cold fire. Surprisingly there was no pain as the fire licked his blood soaked skin. Anothere ofe of the hand, and the chains tightened, forcing Lucius’s now naked body into an obscene X.

With a satisfied grunt, Dumbledore produced a thin cane with an ivory and silver handle. He strode forward until he stood directly behind Lucius. The blond turned his head, and his eyes widened in disbeli

“No,” Lucius said hoarsely.

Dumbledore smiled beatifically. The thin cane whipped through the air and made contact with the soft unyielding flesh …
