I suppose I should not have been surprised that there had been an accident. The way tensions had been rising between Houses as war escalated indicated something woul wro wrong. But I didn\'t, and now I\'m staring at bloody bodies and weeping children
They all tell me it was an accident, a misfired spell striking another curse and the impact bringing ancient and crumbling rock down around them. I don\'t want to believe my eyes.
He lies there, unmoving, beautiful silvery perfection even in this, the last of the dust beginning to settle as a horrified quiet settles across the corridor.
I will myself to move, to go to him, see if his heart still beats, knowing the answer. His robes are torn, bloodied, split up the arm revealing the ugly blemish he took upon himself to prove, once and for all, that he was as good as his father.
My eyes give out and I force myself to turn away, blinking back the only visible sign of my pain even as Poppy arrives, her quickly indrawn breath the marker of her own surprise. They had probably just told her, as they told me, that it was an \"accident\".
There are five Slytherins in the rubble -- Crabbe, Goyle, Zabini, Parkinson... and him. Malfoy. The boy who has spent the majority of his seventh year trying to insinuate himself into my bed. The boy who is only doing this on the instruction of his elders, to gain their acceptance and perhaps their trust. The boy who knows he can play on my weakness for his father.
The boy who is most probably dead.
Pomfrey is trying to talk to me. I do not answer. I turn and walk away. As soon as they are out of sight I break into a run.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dumbledore watches Snape\'s hands shake as he sips his tea, even as he tells his Potions Master that he will see to the matter of informing the families of the \"accident\".
\"It is not your fault Severus. You cannot be everywhere at once.\"
\"And you can, I suppose?\" The reply is quick, snapped and sarcastic, bringing a sigh forth from the Headmaster.
\"No, I cannot. It was an accident, my boy, simply an accident.\"
Obsidian eyes flash with anger as Snape looks up to him. \"An accident?\" he spits. \"Then why was there the trace of a Weakening Spell in the air?\"
The quick fading of the twinkle in the Headmaster\'s eyes tells Snape this is news to him. \"Are you sure?\"
\"I know the feel of a spell, Headmaster. Someone deliberately weakened that wall.\"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I look at you, lying there, still so perfect, and I refuse to believe you are gone. We... the Headmaster and I... We were going to save you. From your father, from the Dark Lord
From yourse
A cold, bitter laugh escapes my lips and I turn away to leave...
... And Lucius stands in front of me, cold, menacing. He takes one look at you, and he too turns his back. I do not catch the comment that falls from his lips, it was not directed at me, but I feel he has abandoned you too.
So I turn back, for one last look.
Your body is gone.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The rumours about the vanishing body of Draco Malfoy begin to fly through the school almost as soon as Snape leaves the Hospital Wing. Everyone skirts around the Potions Master, half-afraid he had something to do with the vanishing, and half-afraid of how he is reacting to the loss of five of his precious Slytherins.
He, on the other hand, seems to be hell bent on proving something. No one, save the Headmaster, knows what, or why. The families come forward to claim their dead, all except Malfoy senior, who avoids Hogwarts like the plague.
No one knows why that is, either.
The Gryffindor trio dread the upcoming Potions lessons, only to find Snape has gone. Dumbledore, the twinkle faded from his eyes, admits nothing save that Snape is taking \'personal time\'.
\"Personal time my foot, he\'s lost it! Done a runner!\" Ron hisses across the classroom, missing Harry\'s worried look.
Hermione notes it, but says nothing, her attention focused onto her books.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There is only one thing I can do now... And do it I must...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Days later, Voldemort is on the move. Losses on both sides are high, the pain of loss increasing in all Houses. Snape is still missing, worried looks are passed across the staff table as they eye his empty seat. Still Dumbledore keeps quiet.
Members of the Order of the Phoenix are seen coming and going from HeadHeadmasters office. Tonks is a regular visitor, her wild looks becoming more and more tame, until word comes.
The dawn of the final battle is upon them.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A life for a life. You will be safe, my godson.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A bloody battle ensued, and finally Voldemort was staring at the wrong end of Harry Potter\'s wand. \"I have to do this, you know,\" The dark haired boy said softly. \"I\'m going to be free... Once and for all... Avada...\"
\"Kill me and curse your lover, Potter!\" The reptile-like creature spat at him, and Harry froze.
Voldemort took advantage of Potter\'s momentary mistake, turning the tables so that Harry was pinned beneath him, wand against his throat. \"He begged for another\'s life... Not yours, not his own. He begged for the Malfoyt\'st\'s life, Potter... And I took great pleasure in telling him the boy died of my will...\"
Harry tried to move, to throw the Dark Lord off him, but it was too difficult, and too late. \"Avada...\"
Again the killing curse was interrupted, this time by Snape\'s loud \"Expelliarmus!\" and Voldemort was thrown backward from Harry, who wasted no time in raising his own wand, and casting the curse he had begun.
It was done.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You hate me, don\'t you?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
They sat in Snape\'s chambers, staring at each other with cold eyes, Snape\'s dulled obsidian more distant than Harry\'s shining green.
\"Are you going to tell me what he meant?\" Harry asked softly. \"How he knew about us?\"
Snape looked at him, fury bringing fire and light to shine forth through the dark pools. \"You have no right...\"
\"I HAVE EVERY RIGHT!\" The Boy-Who-Lived stormed. \"My greatest enemy tells me my secret lover BEGGED for someone elses life! My nemesis\' life!\"
\"Your nemesis is... was... my godson. I didn\'t realise when Draco\'s body went missing, that Lucius had had it sent to Voldemort.\" Snape paused. \"I should have realised. His birthday fits into a unique period... his blood carried more than just Veela properties Potter... His blood is almost as potent to a Dark Wizard as yours. Voldemort had him killed... because he wanted to test my loyalty, and his father\'s. And because he needed the blood.\"
Harry shook his head. \"That doesn\'t explain anything!\"
\"Draco\'s blood was the key ingredient in a magic-sapping potion. When the boy appeared to have died, and his body vanished I was called to Voldemort to make it, bring it back with me and feed it to you... I didn\'t know I had been fed a weaker form of Truth Potion... and our... relationship came to light.\"
Snape seemed to deflate. \"But not before I attempted to... persuade the Dark Lord not to use Draco\'s blood. He hadn\'t killed him. Dead, his blood was useless. But the illusion of Death was very, very well performed. You see, Draco had set off the spell by picking a fight with someone as he had been instructed to, so the wall would fall in such a way to cause grevious injuries. Whilst he was there, he took an untraceable potion... One of my own design. If I had known...\"
Harry cut him off. \"Who set the weakening spell you thought you sensed?\"
\"Draco, as instructed.\"
Harry stood, shaking his head. \"I\'m going to bed, Severus... We can talk later. When you have better excuses than these.\"
Snape watched him walk away, as Lucius appeared from the shadows. \"Finite Incantatum,\" He whispered softly, and Snape slumped forward blindly. \"Well done my pet,\" The blond man crooned softly, stroking his hair. \"We will bring about this new age after all, now Potter has done us that immense favour in removing the idiot Riddle...\"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I hate you Lucius. Damn you, let me go! I will not bring about the end of the world.
Why is it always you? Your Imperio...
I could never deny you anything.
Harry...
Save me from myself.
