Chapter 1: Strange Attack
Harry\'s 17th birthday was quickly approaching. In terms of Voldemort and his evil activities, last year had been relatively quiet. In fact, it had been almost like his first year and third year, except there was no DADA professor helping Voldemort or Dementors guarding Hogwarts against Sirius Black. Harry still choked at that. It had been a year since his godfather was killed by Bellatrix Lestrange at the Department of Mysteries. But instead of moping around, he worked on his Occulmency last year and was able to repel Voldemort multiple times. That was probably why all things, to paraphrase a famous literary title, were quiet at the Hogwarts front.
For the past two summers, his guardians, the Dursleys, had pretty much left him alone. To continue being on their good side, Harry had volunteered to cook the meals during the weekdays and to do outside work. This and the threat that members of the Order had given the Dursleys at the end of his fifth year, had cowed them into virtual silence. But Harry suspected there was another reason for their cooperation: this was the final summer that he would have to spend with them. After he graduated from Hogwarts, he would be able to live on his own. Provided that Voldemort was defeated, of course.
The reason Voldemort had tried to kill Harry as a baby was because of a prophecy. Voldemort had only heard one part about the one having the power to defeat him approaching. He did not know that he needed to die or kill Harry. But Harry had suspected Voldemort would soon find out because of what was beginning to happen. Even though his sixth year was quiet, he had started to weaken in terms of strength and at first, people thought it was either a disease and/or an attack by Voldemort. But due to his connection to Voldemort through his scar, Harry suspected that Voldemort was also starting to weaken. Basically, the final part of the prophecy was beginning to take shape: if neither killed each other, neither would survive. Harry only hoped he would have enough strength to finish out his education because he would need them: NEWTS were fast approaching.
The time was 8:00 in the morning, July 30. Harry left his room and headed downstairs to make breakfast. But there was an eerie silence. Even though his birthday was tomorrow, he was still under the restriction of underage magic. Yet, something was wrong. He drew out his wand and began checking room by room. He headed to the living room where a shock awaited him: the Dursleys were bound and gagged with a tall blackhaired wizard pointing his wand at them. \"You filthy muggles! Now, where is the boy!\" the intruder snarled.
Since he had the element of surprise, Harry decided on a different tactic. Having watched some American football on TV, he had a running start and tackled the intruder. The intruder cursed, with his wand flying out of his hand. Now, Harry and the intruder were on an even playing field. The intruder got up and snarled. \"So, Potter! I knew...,\" but Harry delivered a blow to the intruder\'s head, causing him to stumble backwards.
\"Not used to a physical...mugglelike attack, are you?\" Harry smirked and drew out his wand again and had it pointed at the stranger\'s heart. But there was something disturbingly familiar about him. But before he could figure it out, the intruder vanished. Not apparated, not portkey, but simply vanished. What the heck was going on?
Harry proceded to untie his relatives, told them to stay put and went off to owl the Order about what happened. Hedwig must\'ve flown faster than the sound barrier, because about ten minutes later, Moody, Lupin and Tonks were in the living room of the Dursleys. Vernon Dursley paled when he saw them again, especially Moody. But since he was almost killed a little while ago, he was also glad to see them.
\"Potter, we need to go to headquarters now. You\'re no longer safe here,\" Moody growled. Harry nodded and got his things. But just as they were about to set off, another weak spell overcame him. Not again, Harry thought. Lupin and Moody rushed over and helped him to stand on his feet. \"Alright, Potter?\" Moody asked, almost sympathetically...well, as sympathetically as the ex-Auror could get.
Harry nodded, but the latest weak spell took even more energy out of him. He was beginning to doubt whether he would have the strength to face Voldemort, let alone defeat him and finish out his education at Hogwarts. The group used a portkey and were soon back at Number 12 Grimmauld Place. Moody talked to Mrs. Weasley and Dumbledore. Mrs. Weasley rushed over to Harry and helped him into a bedroom and gave him a Dreamless Potion. She then turned and went back downstairs.
\"What\'s happening with Harry, Albus?\" Mrs. Weasley asked, tears coming to her eyes. Even though he wasn\'t biologically related, she still regarded him as one of her own children though and a member of her family.
\"Molly, I\'m afraid the prophecy is beginning to take shape. This year, either Harry will kill Voldemort or be killed by Voldemort or neither of them will survive,\" Dumbledore announced gravely.
Meanwhile, at a secret location, Voldemort was having similar difficulties. \"Wormtail,\" he hissed, \"help me to my chair.\" The balding Death Eater trembled in fear as he helped his rapidly weakening master to his chair. For the past year or so, Voldemort had started to weaken and he now ongeonger had the strength to punish his Death Eaters for failing to find an answer. \"Lucius!\" he snarled and Lucius Malfoy stepped forward. \"I\'m giving you this final chance to make up for your failure. I don\'t care what you have to do, who you have to talk to, but find out two things: that blasted prophecy and why I\'m am weakening. And if you fail, Wormtail will execute you!\"
Meanwhile, the mysterious attacker appeared right outside of the Burrow. Smiling as he detected her presence. Soon, we\'ll be together again, he thought. And walked to the front door.
