Secrets In The Eyes Of The Enemy- Chapter 1-Playing Catch-up
It’s been eleven years since The Golden Trio and The Slytherin Prince have passed through Hogwarts Halls together, but time marches on for everyone.
Harry Potter is no longer renowned as ‘The Boy Who Lived’ but instead as ‘The English Savior’. His heroic capturing of the snitch has saved England on more than one occasion from a potential loss. His Gin Ginny Weasley turned Potter is a fine chaser in her own right, and shares duties as Chuddley Cannons Captain with her husband. They decided it would be best to rebuild Godric’s Hollow and make it once again a family home. They couldn’t wait to wed so a month after Ginny finished school they married, and by September they found themselves expecting their first of three children. The eldest Sirius is 9, Lily 7, and James 4. They are a rambunctious lot who can often found in the company of their numerous Weasley cousins.
Ronald Weasley married his Hogwarts sweetheart’s sister Pavarti Patil. The two spent a fun filled drunken weekend together that caused Ron to realize he had been dating the wrong twin. They too have three children, Ronald Jr. 9, Harry 7, and Hermione 5. Ron endures endless poking about his choice in children’s names, but when asked he always replies, “I only hope my children are as close as the three of us were.”
The trio remained close even after graduation despite Hermione’s attempts to cut herself off from the rest of the world over the loss of her children. Though every department in the ministry attempted to find the twins, after that fateful graduation night they were never seen. After years of searching when all they leads they had, had gone cold. The Ministry no longer considered the twins missing persons, but lost souls. Their file was handed over to the department of mysteries, and found itscollcollecting dust on a shelf. Given no hope that the children that were lost would ever be returned to them, Hermione and Draco plunged themselves into despair over their grief. It was only with Albus Dumbledore’s kindness and guidance that they were able to keep their marriage and sanity together.
Within a few years of Voldemort defeated Professor Snape decided he would prefer a more solitary life away from Hogwarts and resigned as Potions Master. Likewise Kingsley Shacklebolt decided it was time to return to being an aurora within the ministry. The departure of these fine professors in two key courses left Dumbledore with a perfect opportunity to kill two birds with one stone. It was decided that not only were Draco and Hermione competent enough to teach, but that it would be just what they needed to focus their lives in a different direction.
So for the eleventh straight year Draco and Hermione Malfoy attended the start of term faculty meeting.

Dumbledore’s ever-jubilant voice resonated through his office, “Welcome all. I trust everyone enjoyed their summer break?” the grouped nodded and murmured affirmatively to the headmaster’s question. Pleased to hear the response he turned toward the back left corner of his office and continued with a twinkle in his eye, “Draco, Hermione, please tell Noddy thank you for her little treats. I found a most delicious batch of fudge tucked into my robes this morning.”
Draco smiled and said, “She was devastated to see you leave sir. She swears that the elves here aren’t taking care of you properly, or you wouldn’t be only skin and bones.”
Dumbledore chuckled and replied, “Yes indeed for her sake I may need to return to Avalon over Christmas break, if only to assuage her fears about my care.”
Draco grinned as he replied, “Of course sir you’d only indulge in fresh batch a sweets for Noddy’s benefit.”
Dumbledore laughed and continued, “Alright enough about the simple pleasures of an old man and on to the task at hand. The Hogwarts express departed the station on time and is due to arrive in thirty minutes. Hagrid has already left to guide the thestrals to the bottom of the mountain and make sure the boats are in place for all the first years.” A quite sob was heard from the corner of the room but after receiving a nod from Draco, Dumbledore continued. “Minerva, how many first years are we expecting this year?”
In a firm tight voice Minerva McGonagall announced, “Thirty-eight first years will be joining us this evening. Yes, quite an improvement from last years Twenty five.”
Hermione’s voice squeaked from the corner of the room, “Are there any twins?”
McGonagall looked to Dumbledore before answering, “There are two sets of twins this year, Alex and Elizabeth Pucey and Jaden and Rose Nott.”
Hermione scurried from the room with a trail of tears left in her wake.
Dumbledore announced to the remaining professors, “We better head down. The students should be arriving shortly. Minerva would you please make sure Hermione is all right. I need a word with Draco. “
“Yes sir of course.” And McGonagall along with the remainder of the staff filled out of the office until only Draco and Albus were left behind.
Dumbledore began, “Have a seat Draco.” Draco took a seat in one of the high-backed leather chairs situated in front of Dumbledore’s desk. Once they were both seated the headmaster continued, “Draco I’m terrible worried about Hermione. I haven’t seen my granddaughter smile once since we left Avalon three days ago.”
Draco frowned as he replied, “Albus this would be the year the twins would be starting and it’s tearing hp inp inside. It’s been eleven years and not for lack of trying but we’ve never found as much as a hair. I know it’s a lot to hope for that they would just come walking in with this year’s group, but that’s just what she’s hoping. Truth be told I think I am too.”
Dumbledore nodded in understanding before saying, “We have done everything in our power to find them and I only ask that you are there for your wife should they not be amongst this years group.” Dumbledore lifted an old dust covered book from his desk and handed it to Draco before continuing, “I will tell you though that neither set of twins is listed in the registry. It does offer us hope that our wishes may well come true but we must also realize there are many reasons for them not to be listed: the parents may have remarried, they may not actually be twins, or they may be adopted. While I would like nothing more to see our family whole once more, I must ask you to please brace yourselves for the worst.”
Draco looked down at his hands as he said, “Albus I’m not sure how much more I can do. The hope that we would find them someday no matter how far in the future is the only thing that has kept us going. If they’re not there tonight I’m not sure there is anything left for us.”
Albus replied with sadness in his voice, “You have done more for her than anyone could ever ask. I only hope that the two of you would remember the love you share for each other was there long before the children ever came into this world.”
As a single tear cascaded down his cheek Draco responded, “Hermione is the only reason I am still here today. I love her more with each moment we spend together. Should they not be there tonight, if she loses that last string of hope, and she choose to leave this world. I will follow her.” With that said he left the headmasters office without so much as a second look.
Dumbledore placed his hands together and softly prayed, “Please bring home the two we’ve lost before we lose two more.”
