The Prologue
~*~*~*~
“What exactly are you telling me, sir?” Harry Potter asked wearily. It had been a terribly long night, and he desperately needed sleep. His mind was far too muddled and confused to be contemplating life and death among other things.
Dumbledore smiled sadly. “I understand that you are quite exhausted, Harry. You had a trying night; however, you must carefully consider what I am telling you.”
“Which is…?”
“In plain and simple terms, Harry, you may select two people to bring back from the dead.”
Harry stared blankly at the Headmaster.
“How?” he finally managed.
“I’m afraid that is something that we cannot discuss right now,” Dumbledore replied quietly. “You must make your decision within twenty-four hours.”
“What?” Harry gasped. “Twenty-four hours! How am I-“
“Please do not waste your time arguing with me on this point. At some point in the near future, it will all be explained to you,” Dumbledore spoke regretfully. “Perhaps it would best for you to return to Gryffindor tower and try to rest some.”
“Rest?” Harry nearly glared at the Headmaster. “How am I supposed to rest when I have a decision like this on my mind?”
“Good night, Harry. Today was especially traumatic. You need sleep.”
Harry crinkled his forehead before leaving Dumbledore’s office. He was in deep thought as he walked through Hogwarts’ weaving corridors.
“You okay?”
Harry gasped and jumped back against the wall. He sighed when he saw who was in front of him. “You scared me,” he whispered.
“Sorry. You seem quite jumpy. I have to say I can’t really blame you after today.”
Harry numbly nodded and leaned his head against his lover’s chest.
“So what did Dumbledore want to tell you?”
“Oh nothing much,” Harry muttered sarcastically. “I have twenty-four hours to decide which two people I want to bring back to life.”
“What?!”
“You heard me,” Harry muttered.
“Only two?”
“Only two.”
“Gods, Harry, what are you going to do?”
“I don’t know,” Harry replied with tears in his eyes. “I never knew my parents, but the only person who has ever felt like a parent to me was-“
“Sirius.”
“Exactly,” Harry shuddered and allowed himself to be buried in his lover’s embrace. “Merlin, help me. I have no idea what to do.”
