The Things I Didn't Say

Warnings: Maybe a little sappy, but the song is overall a great one. Song: \"Sweetest of All\" by Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show. The lemons come in the next chapter.

Hermione sighed as she looked around her room. All of her belongings packed away in her trunk, waiting for the house elves to take it to the train. She slowly walked around the room, letting her fingers trail over the furniture, the memories returning. Games of Exploding Snap after curfew with Harry and Ron, late nights studying, lazy afternoons reading in the window seat and those eyes, searching her soul, making her crazy with passion.

She shook herself out of that memory with the arrival of the house elf to take her trunk. With a snap of his fingers her whole life at Hogwarts was gone. She felt the tears spring to her eyes again. She wiped them away, determined to make it home before she started crying. She mentally braced herself and walked into the common room. Harry, Ron, and Ginny were sitting there, waiting on her. She smiled at them, sitting on the arm of the chair Ron was in.

\"All packed \'Mione?\" asked Ron. She nodded, laying her arm around his shoulders. He wrapped his arm around her waist, just holding her. Harry grinned at them, Ginny sitting in his lap, tears forming in her eyes.

\"I can\'t believe you guys won\'t be here next year! What am I g to to do for fun? No invisibility cloaks, no late night potion brewing. Qudditch won\'t be the same without Gryffidor\'s best seeker and beater ever!\"

Harry kissed her cheek gently. \"We\'re not going far. Ron and I are going into Auror training and Hermione is going to the University. We\'ll be back to visit before you know it. Besides, I\'m going to be at the Burrow to see you all this summer.\" Ginny giggled, kissing his nose. Ron just scoffed.

Hermione stood up, straightening her skirt. \"I\'m going to walk around the castle before it\'s time to leave.\" Ron started to stand. She held her hand up. \"It\'s ok Ron. I just want to say good-bye to everything. I\'ll be back before the train leaves, promise.\" Ron nodded, settling back in his chair.

Hermione left through the portrait hole, sadden at the thought of it being her last time doing that. She wandered down the halls, bidding farewell to the moving paintings. The ghosts of the houses were wiping their translucent faces with shimmering handkerchiefs, telling the newly graduated students good-bye. Nearly Headless Nick tried to hug her, but settled for her promise that she would owl him every week.

Down more hallways, good-byes to more Professors, more memories playing in her head. She didn\'t notice until she shivered from the chill that she had made her way to the Dungeons. The letter in her pocket made itself known, and she knew this was the time to give it to him. She knocked on the door and waited.

Severus Snape sat in his chambers, looking at the brown liquid in the glass he held. Another graduation had come and gone. Another class of hardly-prepared Witches and Wizards were being unleashed on the world. He snorted. Unleashed was a good word. There wasn\'t one of thosedentdents that was ready to be out on their own. Well, maybe one was ready.

His mind went back to those soft curls, those chocolate eyes that saw him for who he was, those lips that knew exactly how to... \"Whoa there boy. Better stop those thoughts right now. She is leaving for her life. You really couldn\'t expect her to stay, could you?\"

He drained the glass, then stood up, walking around the room. This was what was left of his life. A room in the dungeons; a lonely room in the dungeons. He shook his head, stripping his clothes and crawling into bed. He forced the memories back, fell asleep and hoped he wouldn\'t dream until after they were gone.

Hermione knocked again and waited. It was obvious that he either wasn\'t home, or he was ignoring the knocks. She sighed, taking the letter from her pocket. She looked it over once last time, making sure the seal was still intact and then slid it under the door. With a last, long, wistful look at the door, she departed to board the train to take her home again.

Severus awoke sometime later, his head pounding from the drinking. He stumbled out to the classroom where he kept several potions for just such an occasion. He uncapped one, drank it, then looked around. Maybe he could clean the classroom. That should keep his mind occupied. \"Yeah, occupied with the thought of you and her on that table, you and her against the door, you and her on the desk, hell, you and her everywhere in here.\" He shook his head, starting back for another round of booze when he saw the letter.

He was tempted to send it back to Dumbledore, where he knew it belonged, but the handwriting made him stop. It was hers. She had given him this letter. He gently opened the seal, careful not to hurt anything that would one day remind him of her love. The words he read made even the fortress like emotions of the Potions Master falter:

Severus,

There are something\'s in this world that I know are for certain. Spells, incantations, history; those are certain. Love is another thing that I know is certain. I know you didn\'t believe me when I first told you I loved you, but I wanted to let you know that my love for you was one of the most certain things in my life. I know that living my life is the best, but I also know that I\'ll never stop loving you. Please, if you can, wait for me to finish at the University. If not, I\'ll understand. I just wanted to ask before I left. I love you Severus Snape and I don\'t care if you love yourself or not.

I found the words to a song that describe our relationship. It\'s by a Muggle band, Dr. Hook, but I think they\'ve caught the dynamics of our relationship. Believe me when I say it was the sweetest of all.

All my undying love,

Hermione

Out of all of the nights I remember.
Of all of the loves I recall.
There are many who live in my memory
but you were the sweetest of all.

Wasn\'t it sweetest of all babe?
Wasn\'t it sweetest of all?
I wasn\'t your first love -
I wasn\'t your last
but wasn\'t it sweetest of all?

Sometimes I still think about you.
Sometimes I wish that you\'d call.
And sometimes I feel like you\'re lyin\' here with me
and it\'s still the sweetest of all.
So keep your good-byes in your pocket you ain\'t goin\' nowhere at all.
Your memory is stayin\' here with me
\'cos you were the sweetest of all.

Wasn\'t it sweetest of all babe?
Wasn\'t it sweetest of all?
Of all of the lovers you let lie beside you
weren\'t we sweetest of all?

Severus kept his eyes on the letter for several minutes afterwards.sighsighed, folding it back up gently, replacing it in it\'s envelope. She had asked him to wait for her. Wait for her until she finished at the University. He put the letter in a wooden box beside his bed and turned the key. He sat back down in the chair by the fire and smiled. Wait for her to finish at the University. He could do that. Like she said, it was the sweetest of all.
