\"Angel came down,
From heaven yesterday,
She stayed with me
Just long enough to rescue me\"

Angel - Jimi Hendrix

Hermione was awakened by a loud banging on her door. She stumbled out of bed, grabbing her wand out of her robes which she had passed out in, and threw the door open, glaring with the one eye she had managed to open.

\"What?\" She snapped trying to focus. Willow Rosenberg, one of her team was standing at the door, looking at her in concern.

\"Oh sorry Hermione, we thought you would be awake, we were getting worried about you.\" Said Willow in a soft voice.

\"Why would you be worried about me?\" Hermione waved her in and began looking for the hangover cure she always kept on her since becoming an Auror, encountering many late night drinking sessions.

\"Well, you didn’t come and check in with us.\" She said, looking very uncomfortable at having to say this to her superior.

\"Shit!\" Hermione looked at her watch 4.25am. She was supposed to have taken over the patrol at 4.00. \"O.k. I’m coming now. Do you have anything to report?\"

\"Well, Finn and Harris saw Professor Snape leaving the grounds at 20.00 hours but you told us to let him come and go without questioning him so they just logged the time and continued the patrol. Other than that, nothing at all.\" Willow said.

\"Professor Snape has not come back yet?\" Asked Hermione. She knew, before Minerva had mentioned it earlier that evening, how many times Snape had been called, as her team were monitoring traffic in and out of the school and he was the only one who ever left the grounds in the evening anymore.

\"Not as of when I left. Tara said she would carry on patrolling until you took over.\"

When Hermione was promoted she had been allowed to pick her own team. She had picked Willow Rosenberg, Tara Maclay, Alex Harris and Riley Finn after watching them give a demonstration on the prevention of magical riots. They were all stationed in England from the U.S, and had always worked together. Hermione had been impressed with them straight away and after going undercover with her a couple of times they had instantly wanted to be part of a team headed up by her.

Hermione performed a cleansing charm on herself, not bothering with the make up charm and changed into an old pair of blue jeans, a white t-shirt and trainers. She quickly ran a brush through her hair, which was always poker straight now after Lavender and Parvati over did a straightening charm on her in their sixth year, and which she wore loose tonight, falling down her back.

She grabbed her wand and a set of old robes, and she and Willow headed out to find Tara.

~*~*~

Tara was patrolling the lake when Hermione and Willow found her.

\"Hi guys.\" Said Tara, smiling tiredly. \"Nothing to report Hermione.\"

\"Right, thanks for staying out here, you two get off to bed now, and I’ll finish off here\"

The two women headed off to the castle and Hermione pulled her robes tighter around her and shivered with cold (Y’no for someone who was once considered the cleverest witch in a century, you\'re big idiot when it comes to dressing for nightly patrols) She carried on around the lake and headed down towards the gates.

She wouldn’t admit it to anyone but she was worried about Snape. He was usually back by now and after her conversation with Minerva earlier, she was getting more and more uneasy that he hadn’t returned yet. She had some idea of the sort of state he came back from meetings in. She remembered overhearing the adults talking about him one night, when she was staying at Grimmauld Place, the summer before her sixth year at Hogwarts. She and Ginny had been sitting at the top of the stairs when they should have been in bed. She already had a bit of a secret crush of him.

(Ginny handed her an extendable ear and put her own in.

Hermione frowned “I don’t know if this is such a good idea Ginny, if we get caught using these again your mum is going to be furious”

Ginny smiled at her “Oh come on Hermione, live a little”.

They dropped the ears over the banisters and listened. They could make out the voices of Mr and Mrs Weasley, Tonks, Remus and Sirius.

“Sooner or later they are going to find out and kill him” said Mrs Weasley.
Both girls sat straight up, thinking she was talking about Harry.

“Oh well, no great loss there then” said Sirius snidely.

“Sirius, we all know what you think of Severus, but he is still a member of the order, one of us” said Tonks, “And if he keeps pushing them for information, they will figure it out”

“Dumbledore says that he has to be admitted to the infirmary every time he comes back from one of those meetings” said Mr Weasley sadly “He may not be the most pleasant man in the world but I think we all know that he is trying to make amends”

Sirius mumbled something under his breath causing Remus to say “Come on Padfoot, you know as well as I do that he is an invaluable member of the order and his information has helped us save a lot of lives”

The girls jumped up and ran to their rooms as they heard Mr Weasley saying that everyone should call it a night, but Hermione didn’t sleep that night, wishing they would just see through the cold exterior, to the brilliant man and give him a chance.)

“What the hell did I know” she said, shaking her head “Where the hell is the stroppy prick?” (Maybe he just snuck in past the team while they were patrolling another part of the grounds and is safely tucked up in the Batcave by now, while you’re out here freezing your arse off) She thought to herself, snorting.

She made her way back around the lake towards the direction of the school gates, trying to convince herself simultaneously, that it had nothing to do with Snape and that she hadn’t been a little bit hurt by Minerva’s assumption that she wouldn’t care if he got killed.

(O.k., just because you hate him doesn’t mean he’s not part of your family)

The giant squid reared its head to see who was about and dipped back below the surface

(O.k, so you were planning to kill him that one time, but who hasn\'t thought about ofing a mean spirited, sarcastic uncle or cousin at one family do or another?)

She started down the path that led to the gates, angry with herself that Minerva’s comments had bothered her so much. She looked at her watch, 4.45am \"Alright you stubborn, ignorant, spiteful bastard, where the hell are you?\" She said out loud to nothing, and that’s when she heard the groaning.

She ran to the gates, and there he was.

He had managed to crawl onto the school grounds and it looked like that had taken all his strength. He was laying on his front with one arm stretched out in front of him and the other one trapped beneath his body. His head was lying on the outstretched arm, there was blood running down the side of his face, which was badly bruised (My god he looks like he’s been hit by a car) \"Severus, can you hear me? Are you badly hurt?\" She knelt down beside him and felt his face. He was freezing. She stood up and removed her robes, casting a warming charm on them, and covering him in them.

Severus felt sudden warmth seeping into his body, and thought that if it wasn’t for the unbearable pain he could have gladly slept for a week. He opened his eyes to try and make out what was going on. He looked around him, dawn was breaking, the grounds, taking on an eerie pink glow, and then his eyes came to rest on her (I must be dead)He thought to himself. (Although how I ended up in this place I’ll never know. I certainly don’t deserve it.)

There was a young woman kneeling down next to him. She was dressed in white and her long dark hair fell over her shoulders, almost to her waist. She looked at him and smiled, her big, brown eyes showing obvious relief at seeing him awake. With the rising sun casting a light glow behind her, he thought she was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen.

\"Angel.\" He managed to croak.

\"What?\" She said, clearly surprised

\"Are you an angel?\" He tried again, and reaching up to touch her face with a trembling hand. She covered his hand with her own and they stayed like that for a couple of seconds and then he passed out.

Hermione was stunned. She had never thought him capable of any emotions except hate and anger.

She shook herself out of her thoughts, carefully cast mobilicorpus on him and gently began to hover him up to the castle, wondering how he would react when he woke up.

If he woke up.

Slitheringriffendor ; I wanted to make her completely different on the outside, but still show her human vulnerabilities, which everyone has no matter how tough. Glad you like it.
