House of Pain

I own not the Harry Potter universe and Absinthe can not be owned by anyone for she is a living soul I only helped to give birth too.

Chapter 8

House of Pain

Severus Snape considered Albus Dumbledore to be one of his best friends, like a father even. But right now he was ready to inflict the Crucio on him and not even
think twice about it. It wasn't Albus's fault though, how could he have known what the sight of that girl would do to him. Time turners couldn't take you back very
far but he could swear he had just stepped back in time when he saw Julienne's face. No it's not Julienne's face, Absinthe, her name was Absinthe. He couldn't help
but wonder if that was because of him. Absinthe, their poison of choice. Wasn't that what she had called him, her poison along with that other name that he
couldn't bare to here. No he had to get these thoughts out of his head. It didn't matter now anyway. She was gone, really gone this time, but she had been alive for
all these years, ... she had been alive and he hadn't known it.

'What if... No, stop this immediately. This train of thought is useless and completely irrational.'

If there was one thing he couldn't stand it was being irrational. Of course there were plenty of things he couldn't stand and she seemed to incorporate them all into
one nicely formed package that he was unable to resist. He had even entertained the thought that Absinthe was his child then he saw Blacks eyes, Sirius Black's
mocking eyes. That was the final humiliation, to know that she actually chose him to father her child. The very man who exposed the Potters to Voldemort.

'I wouldn't be surprised if he was the one who killed her parents. There you go again, stop thinking about it. Find something to do.'

All he could do was think about Julienne and pretty soon he was in his favorite chair reliving the memories.

It was time to do the sorting. Professor Mcgonagall sat the hat on the stool and it said it's little song. Severus knew exactly what to expect. He was from a long
line of wizards and witches all of which went to Hogwarts. He knew he would be sorted he knew he would go to Ravenclaw, and he knew how his seven years
would be spent. Every family member before him was on the Quidditch team. They all became prefects, they all had graduated with honors and had gone on to
work in the ministry. At the age of 25 he would be introduced to his future wife they would be married and would be expected to produce another witch or wizard
within the first 2 years. He had no reason to question this system it had obviously worked for his family in the past and he was sure it would work for him.

Well, he had graduated with honors at least. The first problem came with sorting. He dow down confident that he was a Ravenclaw, and very proud of the fact. The
hat sat silent for a great while, Severus began to wonder if his family had lied to him about the way this worked, then...

"Well, I definitely know you, but you don't seem to fit. I honestly don't know where to put you." said the voice in his ear. "I know your family are Ravenclaws, but
you don't seem to fit that mold. Your different, you have the soul of a Griffindor, brave and strong. On the other hand you have the overwhelming desire to prove
that you are good no... better than the tradition. It's all here. Even you don't know it yet. I think Slytherin is the best choice." Before he could protest he heard the
hat shout Slytherin and the tables were cheering. He got up and walked to the Slytherin table, completely unprepared for his future for the first time ever.

His parents had practically disowned him for what they called betraying the family. His father was extreme in his punishments as he had always been. Snape came
back from Christmas black and blue. In his second year when he didn't make the quidditch team, it just got worse. Pretty soon he was spending every holiday at the
school and going home only for the summer. If he could get out of it he wouldn't do that. It was his third year, turning thirteen, hormones raging, that it all went to
hell. He had realized his specialty in the area of potions, another first for the Snape family. He spent all his spare time in the dungeons or the green house. That's
where he met Lilly, she was having problems with the herbology class and was trying to improve her grade by doing extra work. She wasn't doing to well
however, whatever it was she was trying to keep alive had withered at her touch.

"What have you done?" He looked worriedly at the plant hoping it wasn't poisonous or rare and sounded angry.

"I think it's too late. There doesn't seem to be any help for it now." She never even looked up she just kept looking at the plant. He could here the shakiness in her
voice and was certain she was about to cry. Not knowing what to do he began to reprimand her.

"Now see here, crying isn't going to fix anything. Tell me what you've done and we'll fix it." She looked up at him, in shock from the verbal assault, and began
stuttering.

"I-I-It's a Phoenix Flower. All I did was water it."

"Silly girl, didn't you read your book at all! It's a PH-OE-NIX FLO-WER do you think you should have watered it? It is suppose to rise from it's ashes. How can it
catch on fire if it's well moistened?"

Lilly's face was red and her nostrils were flaring tears began running down her cheeks. "Now listen here you rotten little know-it-all, I didn't ask for your help, and
I don't appreciate you speaking to me like that."

"Maybe that's what you need, someone to talk to you like this, if you had used a little common sense and been a little rational it wouldn't have happened. All you
had to do was think, and you would have come up with the right answer."

"Why do you care anyway?"

"..."

"Well?"

"I hate failure, and irrational behavior. They're signs of weakness."

"Well I must be the weakest person ever!" Another voice said coming from behind him. He turned to see a strawberry blonde walking toward him. "I'm irrational,
unpredictable, chaotic, non-consistent..."

"Inconsistent." he corrected

"and I have bad grammar."

"Not to mention your failing arithmancy."

"Well now let's be fair Lilly, I'm only failing because I don't go." She went and put her arm around Lilly's shoulder. She gave Severus one of her best smiles and
stuck out her hand. "Julienne"

"I'm Severus." He refused to shake hands.

"Oh, what's wrong, you too good to shake hands with a weak person. Scared it'll rub off on ya'. Well how about a friendly little hello kiss then." She advanced on
him so suddenly that he backed into a flat of pots scattering them on the floor and falling backwards. Instantly she was on top straddling him when he put his hand
back on a broken piece of ceramic cutting it very deeply. He cried out in pain and Julienne took his hand. She pulled the piece of pottery out of the wound and
used a handkerchief from her robe pocket to wipe away the blood, his brain registered a scent of roses coming from her. She kissed his wound softly and Severus
could swear that it actually stopped hurting, 'The smell of roses must be getting to me.'

"We need to take you to Madame Pomfrey. This will need to be healed."

Before he knew it he was on his feet being led to the hospital wing by two girls he had just met, and only slightly aware of a new sensation, one he had not been
told about by his family or anyone. As the girls handed him over to Madame Pomfrey he didn't realize that he had a dumb smile on his face. The girls waved good
bye in a mockingly fake sentiment way, Julienne actually using the handkerchief to wave and dab her eyes. "Bye Sevie-poo" they said in unison bringing him back
to reality a bit. The smile faded but only slightly as the girls smiled and walked away.

It was almost a month before he was graced with the presence of Julienne again. Someone had put something in his pumpkin juice the night before, he was certain
it was Sirius Black, and it had caused him to oversleep. He jumped out of bed and ran out of the Slytherin house and tried to get to the eonseons for potions as
quickly as possible. Before he could get there he was grabbed and pulled into an alcove. Someone covered his mouth and he smelled roses again. He didn't even
try to fight, she moved her hand from his mouth and made the shush signal against her lips. Before he knew it he had grabbed her hand moved it and was kissing
her already puckered lips. He pulled back slightly embarrassed waiting for a slap instead she smiled at him and repositioned her hand in his so that their fingers
were locked together. Then he heard a god awful commotion, next thing he knew Sirius Black came running past them with Argus Filch close on his heels. Even
Mrs. Norris was in pursuit. Once they had past Julienne pulled Severus out of the hiding place.

"I didn't want you to get trampled." She kissed him quickly and ran off. "You'd better get down to potions I'm sure you're expected." She turned the corner and
was gone. Severus didn't see her anymore that year. He never could find her during meal times. She didn't seem to be in any of his classes as far as he could tell
she only existed in his mind. That entire summer was spent thinking about her.

Absinthe awoke in a hospital bed in a room with moving pictures. 'Oh shit. You've done it now, you've managed to get yourself to the one place you mom didn't
want you and I'm willing to bet that old man with the stupid smile on his face is Dumbledore.' Sure enough, the first words out of his mouth were "Welcome to
Hogwarts, Absinthe I'm Albus Dumbledore."
