Resigned

CHAPTER 9: Resigned

As the evening wore on, Remus actually ended up enjoying himself. He drank only a couple pints as he had to drive home, and chatted with several of the townspeople. He watched Hermione dance with almost every old man in the town, carefully avoiding the younger men, including Joel the bookselling wife coveter.

The last song of the evening was a slow song called True Companion. To Hermione’s amazement, Remus actually agreed to dance with her. She had expected to have to plead and beg, maybe even get a little help from their new friends. None of that was necessary, when she asked, he took her hand and pulled her into his arms on the floor.

She could feel the heat of his palm pressed into her back, and the soft stroking of his thumb over her skin. She didn’t think he was aware of the tiny caress, and smiled. She had one hand cupped around the back of his neck, idly stroking the soft hair at his nape, and the other was held firmly in his as they moved slowly to the music.

“I thought you would fight me on the dance.” She said, moving a little closer so she could talk to him without others overhearing. At least that was her excuse when she pressed herself against him.

“It would seem strange for a new husband not to dance with his bride at least once.” Remus was amazed at how silky her skin felt beneath his hand.

“But you don’t like to be so close to me.” She whispered.

“A little too late to worry about that now, isn’t it?” Her taste would be forever imprinted on his memory, and even now he wanted to sample her sweet lips again.

“Are you sorry you kissed me?”

“I didn’t have much choice, but no, I am not sorry.” Hermione tucked her head into his shoulder.

“Will you kiss me again?” She asked.

“Somehow I don’t think I will have much choice about that either. It seems all my noble intentions towards you count for naught. I always seem to be fighting the inevitable, and I always lose. You would think I’d have learned that lesson by now.” He said, resting his cheek atop her head.

“Does it have to be so bad Remus?” She was saddened by his continued resistance to what she knew was something special between them.

“If we start something, it can’t end well Hermione. We will both be hurt in the end.”

“There is no “if” we start something Remus, it started months ago when I realized my feeling for you were more than just casual or platonic. If it has to end, then it is our choice to end it well or not.” She pressed her nose into the side of his neck, savoring the soft, spicy scent of his cologne.

“You are so young.” He said, closing his eyes. “You don’t seem to understand that every relationship I have ever entered into has ended badly.”

“Maybe because they were not the right ones for you, did you think about that? Tell me, who could ever understand you the way I do?” She kissed his neck softly, just below his ear and felt him shiver.

“You have a point there. But you are so young, and crushes come and go…”

“Don’t do that Remus. Do not trivialize my feelings. Think about who you are talking to, do you really think I am prone to silly crushes? Do you think I take my recent actions towards you lightly?” She was looking up at him now, her whiskey colored eyes bright with indignation.

“You shouldn’t waste your heart on me. I can not be the man you need me to be.” He said, humbled and honored that she should care for him so much.

“You’re the man that I want, and that is all that I need for now, so drop it Remus. Stop fighting me and let yourself be happy, just once.” The song ended and the crowd was applauding and cheering for the band while Remus and Hermione stood there in silence staring at one another.

“Now will you look at that?” Angus said to Shane and Maureen. “Love is a beautiful thing.”

“I wouldn’t have thought such a young woman would be interested in a man his age.” Maureen said as she wiped out another glass and set it under the bar.

“Age doesn’t matter when it comes to love. Besides, that one has an old soul.” Angus said smiling.

“He seems a might reluctant Da, are you sure he loves the girl?” Shane asked his meddling, matchmaker of a father.

“He does, he just doesn’t want to. Besides, I’m never wrong about these things.” Angus said, slapping his son on the back.

Remus escorted Hermione from the pub by her elbow. Outside on the walk she shivered slightly when a cool breeze blew across her skin. Remus took the sweater she had draped over her arm and settled it around her shoulders. He put an arm around her shoulders and pulled her close to his side, sharing his more than ample body heat as they walked down the street to their car.

When they were settled into the tiny compact car, she became aware of just how tired she actually was. They had barely reached the edge of town where the road opened up and she was asleep, her head falling over to rest on Remus’s shoulder. He glanced up at the three quarter moon and sighed. Just a few more days and another night of his life would be sacrificed to the curse coursing through his blood.

Hermione sighed softly in her sleep and snuggled closer into his side. He was reluctantly resigned to his fate where she was concerned. He had done everything he could to dissuade her from her quest to establish a relationship with him, and he had failed. Maybe after she read a couple of those books she would change her mind.

He pulled into the drive outside their cottage and walked around to the passenger side. He hated to wake her, so he slid his arms beneath her and lifted her out of the car into his arms. He closed his eyes and sniffed the air, making certain there was no one near before pointing his wand at the door and opening it. Once inside he set her to her feet, steadying her as she swayed slightly.

“Are we home already?” She asked, kicking off her shoes.

“Yes, go on to bed, I need to get our things from the car and lock up.” She nodded sleepily and headed towards the bedroom. She dropped her cardigan on the way and just before she disappeared into the bedroom she gave the little bow at the small of her back and tug to loosen her dress.

Remus pointed his wand at the car and watched their purchases float into the house and put themselves away. Magic could make one awfully lazy, he thought with a slight grin on his face as he locked and warded the cottage for the night. He went into the bathroom and changed into his pajamas after a quick shower and made his way to the bedroom.

He gasped and came to a sudden halt in the doorway. Hermione’s cream colored dress lay in a heap on the floor while the witch who had been wearing it was sprawled across the quilt on her stomach wearing nothing but a scrap of nude lace and satin over her backside. She was exhausted, and he shouldn’t be thinking such lascivious thoughts about her delectably round bottom, but he just couldn’t help it. He was a man, not a saint. Hell even a saint wouldn’t be able to stare at that and not have a few wayward thoughts.

He really would rather she put on some sort of night wear so he walked to the side of the bed and shook her shoulder gently.

“Humph.” She grunted.

“You need to put your nightclothes on.” He said quietly.

“Sleeping.” She muttered.

“I know, but you can’t sleep in just your knickers.”

“M’kay.” She mumbled as started to roll over.

“Okay, never mind! Just, don’t do that.” He said, halting her movement. He was having a difficult enough time dealing with the sight of her knicker-clad bottom; he wouldn’t be able to handle seeing her bare breasts at this point. He convinced her to shift without exposing herself so he could tug the quilt from beneath her and cover her with it. He made his way to the other side of the bed and crawled inside, thankful for the rather exhausting day as he slipped easily into sleep.

Alrighty…I have resigned my Remus to the fact that Hermione will not back down…and now that he has kissed her, he is more inclined to play along. So…on we go to some “play”….a full moon…..and a little werewolf nookie perhaps?

I’m so glad you are liking this! I will probably write more Lupin in the future now that I know it’s going well : )

NORTHSTAR- This Hermione is more like me. I tend to say what I think when I think it, I’m brutally honest and when I want something…..ITS MINE!!!!! I’m a bit on the spoiled side…..daddy’s girl, you know how that goes LOL I have no sense of embarrassment or shame….if you don’t really want to know the answer, you really shouldn’t ask me. : )

ANGELBABY – Aren’t most men really just oversized boys? As far as LM and SS go, I figure all that stress from their deatheater days has taken its toll….time to loosen up and hang out with their wang out…rock out with their....oh wait…..thats another story…..The LM and SS all male review? Id buy tickets.

OxKING – I will always finish whatever story I am posting. I am sort of OCD about finishing things and its just plain wrong to get readers into your story and then leave them hanging.

KATE – I am in a good position for writing and updating. I have little little kids. While the oldest is in school and the little ones nap for 2 hours….I write while I do laundry. At night when they go to bed, I write for awhile. I’m lucky to be in a position where I don’t have to work, I can stay home and raise my children, it also gives me the time to write. Both for pleasure(fanfics, and they are my stress relief) and for profit LOL, 1st romance novel to be released in June 08.

***If I mention a song in my fics, I always post the lyrics

TRUE COMPANION Marc Cohn

Baby I've been searching like everybody else

Can't say nothing different about myself

Sometimes I'm an angel and sometimes I'm cruel

But when it comes to love I'm just another fool

Yes I've climbed a mountain

I'm gonna swim the sea

There ain't no act of God, girl

Could keep you safe from me

My arms are reaching out,

out across this canyon

I'm asking you to be my true companion

True companion

True companion

So don't you dare and try to walk away

I've got my heart set on our wedding day

I've got this vision of a girl in white

Made my descision that its you alright

When I take your hand, I watch my heart set sail

I'll take my trembling fingers, and I'll lift up your veil

Then I'll take you home and with wild abandon

Make love to you just like a true companion

You are my true companion

I got a true companion

Whoa true companion

When the years have done irreparable harm

I can see us walking slowly arm in arm,

Just like that couple on the corner do

Cause girl I will always be in love with you

When I look in your eyes, I still see that spark

Until the shadows fall, until the room grows dark

Then when I leave this earth I'll be with the angels standing

I'll be out there watiing for my true companion

Just for my true companion

True companion

True companion
