A Nasty Goodbye
Darque Hart:: So I added a little to the ending. Tell me if you think that closes it a little more. Was it just this chapter or were the others as bad. I rearranged the ending of 3 and the beginning of 4 as well. I think it made it more conclusive. Honestly, I don't like the chapters as they are. When it's all said and done I'll probably more them around more. But for the purpose of posting I keep them some what short. Eventually I'll rearrange where the chapter breaks are to longer chapters. But thank you for the only criticism I've had so far. I don't really have anyone helping or editing for me so I never know if I'm still doing well.
That Friday Hermione said her good byes to the Weasleys and promised to be there bright and early on the 23rd.
“I still don’t see why you don’t just come home now. Why do you have to make things so difficult?” Ron was still angry at Hermione.
“I told you Ronald, I’m having a rough time and I need some time to myself.”
“Geez, you’re so melodramatic sometimes. Not everything has to be about you. Did you ever stop to think about my family who looks forward to seeing you?”
“I can’t believe you!” Hermione ran back towards the castle crying. As she came through the front doors, she ran straight into Professor Snape.
Snape caught Hermione before she fell and set her back on her feet. “What’s wrong?” Hermione’s breath hitched as she tried not to get hysterical. “Alright. Come with me before you hyperventilate.” With that Snape pulled her into his chest and apparated to his rooms.
Hermione stared at him as if he had sprouted an extra limb. “But-but, I thought no one could apparate within Hogwarts. I read it. It was in–” Snape held up a hand to stop her ranting.
“What you read is correct. However, Dumbledore had to make it so I could apparate in and out so that I could leave for the meetings when I was a spy. And it’s been an added perk since then that Dumbledore forgot I have.” Snape smiled evilly. “I saw no need to remind him. It’s keyed to my signature so only I can do it. So don’t worry.”
“Oh.” Hermione sat down in the chair closest to the fire. Snape watched her for a minute while he took off his outer robes. She looked so depressed and drained.
“So, want to tell me what happened?” He sat down in the chair opposite Hermione rolling up his sleeves.
She didn’t look away from the fire, only closed her eyes. “No.”
“Do you honestly think I’m going to give you a choice?”
“You can’t make me talk in any legal way.” She looked over at him then went back to staring at the fire.
Snape knew he was going to have to fight it out of her; he just wasn’t looking forward to it. Looking at her with a smile playing at his lips, he waited for her to get uneasy.
“What are you smiling about?”
“Oh it just astounds me how intelligent you are and how incredibly childish you can be sometimes.” She turned to face him with an incredulous face. “I mean what makes you that I want to sit and play head games with a petulant child.” Hermione was on her feet before he finished, fists clenched at her sides.
“You’re the one who brought me here. I did not run to you. I just happened to run into you.”
Snape stood and took the step between them. “Yeah well, you made it my problem when you decided to cut yourself for no apparent reason.”
At that Hermione swung a punch at his head, which Snape easily caught. She fell against him pounding at his chest. “You told me you understood! You acted as if you cared!” She sobbed into his dress shirt.
Snape wrapped his arms around her. “Ssh. I know. It’s okay. Let it all out.” He rubbed her back trying to sooth her. “Now will you tell me what happened? Obviously I struck a nerve.”
“It was Ron. He keeps nagging at me about not going with him for the holiday. He said I was being selfish and that I should think of someone else for a change.”
Snape mentally cursed the halfwit. Without thinking he looked down and kissed the top of her head. Hermione froze. Shit! Why did I do that? Shit, shit, shit! Snape sat down on the arm of the chair and pulled her to stand in front of him. “I’m sorry Miss Granger. My mind must have gone elsewhere.” He watched as Hermione stared at her feet. “If you want to leave I understand. I just want to know you’re okay.”
“I’m fine, Professor.”
“That doesn’t make it okay.” Snape sat brooding with himself.
Hermione touched under his chin to make him look at her. “Actually it was kinda comforting.” Turning shy again, she turned around wringing her hands.
Snape stepped up behind Hermione and put his hands on her shoulders. Hermione closed her eyes and leaned back into him. He wrapped her arms around her. “Harry was the only person who has ever just held me. I miss him so much.”
“I’m sorry. I wish I could tell you it would get better. But that pain will always be there.”
