Hunter's Return
Author's Notes: This chapter is for all you Nickleback fans out there. It features songs off of their latest album All The Right Reasons. (If you haven't heard it yet go buy a copy today.) The Nickleback songs in this chapter are: If Everyone Cared (which I personally love even though it gets no airtime. Again buy the album.) Far Away, Saving Me and the first three lines of Figure You Out (I'll let you figure it out for yourself.) Also included in this chapter are Bon Jovi's Blaze Of Glory and Loreena McKennitt's The Mummers' Dance (sung by a special guest performer.) Hope you enjoy and please remember to review.
The Gryffindors' cheers could be heard through out the entire castle as they made their way up to the tower to begin the party. As the first group approached the portrait of the Fat Lady they could hear music coming from inside the Common Room. "It's the Phantom Musician." An excited second year screamed.
Prison gates won’t open up for me. On these hands and knees I’m crawling. Oh, I reach for you.
Well I’m terrified of these four walls. These iron bars can’t hold my soul in, all I need is you. Come please I’m calling and oh I scream for you. Hurry I’m falling.
As they enter through the portal leading to the Common Room they stop dead in their tracks as they see the new guy sitting on a table with his left leg dangling before him and his right foot on a chair, singing.
Show me what it’s like, to be the last one standing. And teach me wrong from right, and I’ll show you what I can be. Say it for me, say it to me. And I’ll leave this life behind me. Say it if it’s worth saving me.
More of their housemates begin to arrive and add to the congestion at the portal. Once they hear the music and see who's performing they also stop and listen.
Heaven’s gates won’t open up for me. With these broken wings I’m falling and all I see is you. These city walls ain’t got no love for me. I’m on the ledge of the eighteenth story and oh I scream for you. Come please I’m calling. And all I need from you. Hurry I’m falling.
Ron and Hermione arrive and see the large crowd standing outside the portal and are instantly concerned. As they fight their way trough the crowed to investigate the source of the traffic they also become shocked to find Hunter back and performing in the room.

As soon as Hunter stops playing he looks up and actually smiles at his audience. "Miss me?"
Hermione runs over and hugs him. "Where have you been?" she asks. "Katie's been so worried about you."
She was about to begin lecturing him when Ron places a hand on his girlfriend's shoulder. "Katie knew he's been hanging around school."
Hermione looks at her boyfriend in surprise. "You knew this and never told me."
Before she could redirect the lecture towards Ron, Hunter calls the other students over towards them. "Any requests?" Hunter asks. "Though I should warn you that I only know Muggle music, mostly Rock, a little Country and even less Celtic."
Hermione sees she's not going to win and looks at Hunter. "You know The Mummers' Dance?" she asks.
Hunter grins wickedly at her. "That's one of the few Celtic songs I do know. But you've got to sing since I don't know the words." Hermione shakes her head no as Ron and a few of the others begin encouraging her. Hunter's grin grows even more evil. "If you won't sing then I'll play one of my favorites guaranteed to offend."
Seeing the horror enter her eyes he began playing another song.
I like your pants around your feet. And I like the dirt that's on your knees. I like the way you still say please, while you're looking up at me. You're like my favorite damn disease.
Hermione practically tackled him as she covered his mouth with her hands. She looks at the faces of the first years around them and finally gives in. "You win," she says. "I'll sing." Hunter begins playing as Hermione closes her eyes and starts singing
When in the springtime of the year. When the trees are crowned with leaves. When the ash and oak, and the birch and yew are dressed in ribbons fair.
The other students spread out around them and begin rearranging the furniture around them. They sit down on the furniture and carpet to enjoy the performance.
When owls call the breathless moon. In the blue veil of the night. The shadows of the trees appear, amidst the lantern light
Ron smiles and takes the chair Hunter's foot had been resting on and enjoyed his girlfriend's singing as his teammates entered the common room.
We've been rambling all the night and some time of this day. Now returning back again, we bring a garland gay.
Katie's eyes widen in surprise as a huge smile claims her face. Hunter's back and he's actually performing for the other Gryffindors. She wants to run over and hug him, to cry her happiness into his chest but she doesn't. She just moves quietly towards the front of the audience with the rest of the team and takes the seats offered to them by some of the other students.
Who will go down to those shady groves and summon the shadows there. And tie a ribbon on those sheltering arms, in he springtime of the year
Harry took a vacated seat next to Ron and could understand why the former occupant vacated it so readily. Ron hadn't changed or showered after the game and was pretty ripe. He knew that Ron had planned on doing all that once he got back to the dorm so he could spend some time with Hermione before the party started.
The songs of birds seem to fill the wood, that when the fiddler plays, all their voices can be heard. Long past their woodland days.
Harry had never known that Hermione had such an amazing voice. It was almost like listening to an angle sing. Sitting beside his best mate he was just grateful the redhead had finally swallowed his pride and asked her out last month. If he hadn't acted when he did Harry was fairly certain that she wouldn't be lacking for suitors after tonight.
We've been rambling all the night and some time of this day. Now returning back again, we bring a garland gay. And so they linked their hands and danced, round in circles and in rows. And so the journey of the night descends, when all the shades are gone. A garland gay we bring you here and at your door we stand. It is a sprout well budded out, the work of our Lord's hand. We've been rambling all the night and some time of this day. Now returning back again, we bring a garland gay. We've been rambling all the night and some time of this day. Now returning back again, we bring a garland gay.
The room erupted in applauds and appriative cheers. Hunter agreed to play the rest of the party as long as they cleared a proper dance floor. The party soon wound up in full swing with Hunter providing the music along with a radio someone had provided and Hermione enchanted to act as a backup band.
I wake up in the morning, and I raise my weary head. I've got an old coat for a pillow and the earth was last night's bed. I don't know where I'm going; only God knows where I've been. I'm a devil on the run, a six gun lover, a candle in the wind.
Ron, who at Harry and Hermione’s request and his brother's threats, had showered and changed after Hermione’s performance. He was now dancing with his girlfriend with several other couples. Including Harry, who had invited Cho to the party, Ginny dancing with Neville and the rest of the team minus Katie.
When you're brought into this world, they say you're born in sin. Well at least they gave me something; I didn't have to steal or have to win. Well they tell me that I'm wanted, Yeah, I'm a wanted man. I'm a colt in your stable, I'm what Cain was to Abel, mister catch me if you can. I'm going out in a blaze of glory. Take me now but know the truth. I'm going out in a blaze of glory. Lord I never drew first, but I drew first blood, I'm no one's son. Call me young gun.
Katie had moved one of the comfortable chairs in front of where Hunter was performing and hadn't moved since his first song. She smiled as she listened to him play. She knew she had it bad but honestly she didn’t care.
You ask about my conscience and I offer you my soul. You ask if I'll grow to be a wise man, well I ask if I'll grow old. You ask me if I've known love and what it's like to sing songs in the rain. Well, I've seen love come, and I've seen it shot down. I've seen it die in vain. Shot down in a blaze of glory. Take me now but know the truth. 'Cause I'm going down in a blaze of glory. Lord, I never drew first, but I drew first blood, I'm the devil's son. Call me young gun.
Hunter's eyes never left Katie's as he played his song. He knew how she felt about him; her actions had made that fact very clear. He just wasn't sure how he felt about her. He couldn't get her out of his thoughts but he still wasn't completely ready to risk getting hurt yet.
Each night I go to bed, I pray the Lord my soul to keep. No I ain't looking for forgiveness,
but before I'm six foot deep. Lord, I got to ask a favor and hope you'll understand. 'Cause I've lived life to the fullest, let this boy die like a man. Staring down a bullet let me make my final stand. Shot down in a blaze of glory. Take me now but know the truth. I'm going out in a blaze of glory. Lord I never drew first, but I drew first blood and I'm no one's son. Call me young gun. I'm a young gun...
Hunter announced that he needed a break and set the radio to play on its own until he got back. Walking over to Katie, he invites her to his room to talk. Katie accepts and soon they are sitting on Hunter’s bed as he smokes a cigarette.
"I wanted to apologize for how I acted at the last party." He says setting his cigarette down. "I was upset and had no right to take it out on you." His normal shields and safeguards now gone, Hunter gave her what she wanted. He hid nothing from her allowing her to see him for who he really was.
Katie wrapped her arms around him and held him tightly. "There is nothing to forgive," She said softly. "You were hurting and needed to let someone know how you felt."
They talked for a while longer and he finally admitted that he had been watching her and the others since he took off. They returned to the party after nearly fifteen minutes and Hunter returned to playing.
"This is a song I heard before I came here," Hunter told them as he picked up his guitar. "I hope you all enjoy it." He then looks at Katie and smiles. "This one's for you, Katie."
This time, this place, misused, mistakes. Too long, too late, who was I to make you wait. Just one chance, just one breath, just in case there’s just one left. ‘Cause you know, you know, you know. That I love you; I have loved you all along. And I miss you, been far away for far too long. I keep dreaming you’ll be with me and you’ll never go. Stop breathing if I don’t see you anymore.
Couples begin to dance to the slow soft music and hold each other tightly as the move with the rhythm of the music. A single tear runs down Katie's cheek at the words he's singing. She knows they're not his but they’re close enough for her.
On my knees, I’ll ask. Last chance for one last dance. ‘Cause with you, I’d withstand all of hell to hold your hand. I’d give it all, I’d give for us, give anything but I won’t give up. ‘Cause you know, you know, you know. That I love you; I have loved you all along. And I miss you, been far away for far too long. I keep dreaming you’ll be with me and you’ll never go. Stop breathing if I don’t see you anymore.
Hunter continued playing and watched everyone's reaction to the song, especially Katie's. The song was more accurate then he cared to admit at the moment but he had missed her, even though he barely even knew her. Her willingness to reach out to him and refusal to give up and leave him along did mean something to him. And despite his better judgment so did she. I'm just not sure what.
So far away, been far away for far too long. So far away, been far away for far too long. But you know, you know, you know. I wanted I wanted you to stay. ‘Cause I needed I need to hear you say, that I love you. I have loved you all along. And I forgive you, for being away for far too long. So keep breathing, ‘cause I’m not leaving. Hold on to me and never let me go.
Around two in the morning Professor McGonagall made her usual appearance to breakup the party and send everyone to bed. She was shocked at the scene that greeted her. Hunter was sitting on a stool in front of the fireplace performing for the other Gryffindors.
The common room had been rearranged into a mini-concert hall with students sitting and standing all around him. Katie was sitting in the front row wearing Hunter's jacket smiling at the young man.
From underneath the trees, we watch the sky. Confusing stars for satellites. I never dreamed that you’d be mine. But here we are, we’re here tonight. Singing Amen, I’m alive. Singing Amen, I’m alive.
Their Head of House quietly made her way towards them and stood in the back as she too joined the audience. He's very good and plays with such passion. If he were to apply that same passion to the rest of his life, there's nothing he couldn't do.
If everyone cared and nobody cried. If everyone loved and nobody lied. If everyone shared and swallowed their pride. We’d see the day when nobody died. And I’m singing, Amen I, I’m alive. Amen I, I’m alive.
The Deputy Headmistress found herself actually smiling at the young man's talent and decided to speak with the Headmaster about possibly arranging for Hunter to perform in the Great Hall for the rest of the school.
And in the air the fireflies, our only light in paradise. We’ll show the world they were wrong
And teach them all to sing along. Singing Amen I’m alive. Singing Amen I’m alive. If everyone cared and nobody cried. If everyone loved and nobody lied. If everyone shared and swallowed their pride. We’d see the day when nobody died. If everyone cared and nobody cried. If everyone loved and nobody lied. If everyone shared and swallowed their pride. We’d see the day when nobody died.
The Phantom Musician was gone and Hunter Catiar was alive. For the first time since Erica dead, Hunter felt as if maybe there was something worth living for again. He still wasn't sure what he felt about Katie but he had decided to see where things between them went. I owe her that much, I owe myself that much.
And as we lie beneath the stars, we realize how small we are. If they could love like you and me, imagine what the world could be. If everyone cared and nobody cried. If everyone loved and nobody lied. If everyone shared and swallowed their pride. We’d see the day when nobody died. We’d see the day; we’d see the day when nobody died. We’d see the day; we’d see the day when nobody died. We’d see the day when nobody died.
