Chapter Nine – The Agreement

Lucius only wakened once in the night to groggily pull the covers over them both, and then he passed out again. He didn’t wake up until well after the sun was high in the sky. Lea was sound asleep against his back, making little wuffling noises with each breath. Her slight weight felt good against him with her long brunette hair tangled across him under his chin and catching on his morning whiskers.

Her presence was having an effect he hadn’t foreseen. She was company for him. He liked it. He could always send her back to wherever she stayed when he didn’t want her, but her presence was soothing to him right now. Lucius often felt the loneliest early in the morning and late at night. His incarceration hit him the worst at those times. He had never kept the convenience female overnight, preferring to spend an entire day of sex with her and then send her away at nightfall. He decided that Lea’s new duties as a mistress had just expanded to keeping his isolation at bay. He was pleased with his decision. It never occurred to him to ask her if she wanted to stay with him.

Lucius rose and left Lea snuggled under the covers. He returned to his own bedroom to gather his clothes for the day and then went to take his morning shower. He returned to the second bedroom immaculately dressed and shaved to confront a still sleeping Lea. Sometime during the night she had retrieved the shirt and now wore it, again with only a single button closed. She had wiggled the covers off in her sleep and was sprawled onto his side of the bed.

Lucius’ curiosity was momentarily piqued by the shirt. He remembered now that she had favored it last night before removing it. It had meant little to him then, as he was focused on having her body, but now he wondered. Was she susceptible to nice clothing? It might be a way to commence his control of her as his property. Lucius reached out and gently shook Lea’s shoulder. He wasn’t prepared for her to shoot off the other side of the bed and back against the wall. She blinked at him and clutched the shirt to her.

Lucius knew that the shirt wasn’t being used for modesty; the shirt was her shield against his – or more likely someone else’s - advances. He merely looked at her and said, “Come, Lea, and have breakfast with me.” Lucius left the bedroom, reasoning that his absence would calm her and let her wake up enough to follow him to food. He would have to remember not to wake her with any physical touches. Not until she was more at ease with him.

Lea appeared in her gray shirt after she visited the bathroom. He had heard a great deal of splashing and she smelled of his soap when she finally sat at the table with him, carefully choosing the chair where the extra place setting was. Her hair was wet all around her face and her hands still had droplets of water on them. Lucius added to his knowledge of her, understanding that if she had a choice, she wanted to be clean. That boded well for their future association, as he was himself fastidious by nature.

Lea looked at the dishes and cutlery at her place setting. This was different than the set used the evening before. The wizard had two sets of dishes and eating utensils. Whyever would he need two? It was a puzzle to her. The ones the night before had been much prettier and a more fussy design than these. Lea’s opinion of the wizard dipped a little. He was foolish to waste his money on an extra whole set of dishes. He was very pretty, and he hadn’t hurt her so far in bed, but he wasted his money. She sighed to herself. No one was perfect, but his star was little tarnished now in her eyes. Lea looked up at him expectantly, waiting to see what she should do now.

Lucius started eating his breakfast knowing she would do what he did and he was right. However, why was he getting the impression that she was somehow disappointed in him? She had given no overt clue, except for that sigh. He shook off the feeling and changed tack, “Why don’t you button the shirt up all the way?” Lucius didn’t need the distracting stimulation of her nakedness right now.

A simple answer, “Takes longer to remove it,” stifled that conversation. Lea didn’t add that she didn’t want him to tear off any of the beautiful buttons or rip the material in his haste if she wasn’t taking it off fast enough. Her poor tunic had enough rents in it from eager hands and she didn’t want this shirt to suffer the same fate. Lucius remained oblivious to her real reason; it would never occur to him that an old shirt had so much value.

Lea selected the same utensils that Lucius was eating with and slowly but inexorably vanquished her entire meal. Then she put the utensils down and waited for him again. Lucius was taking a bit longer to finish his portion as he was reading a paper beside his plate, so she quietly looked around the room.

Lucius covertly watched her as she studied his dining area. It was near the kitchen at one end of the drawing room, separated from the main living area only by a wide archway, so she had leisure to look around the entire drawing room also. Her bright blue eyes fastened on his bookcases. She sat staring at the bookcases for some minutes with a look of sadness mixed with wonder. Lucius decided after breakfast to find out if she could even read. If she was a witch, she must have studied some spells, even rudimentary ones. Perhaps she couldn’t practice them much inside the walls of the prison. Many spells wouldn’t work here.

Finally the wizard was finished with his food, and he rose from the table. Lea rose with him. Lucius was having a rather difficult time looking at Lea with her shirt covering very little; he was valiantly trying to control his desires just to prove to himself he could. He managed to put aside his intentions until later and instead led her to the bookcases. Lightly touching his fingers along the spines of a shelf of books, he asked, “Do you read, my dear?” He was careful not to touch her, but stood close by her side.

Lea had been taught her letters by her mother by scraping them on the walls of their room and forming them in the dirt of the outside walkways. She knew their sounds but hadn’t had much chance to read anything. Her mother had tried, but had little time to spend on her daughter’s education. She had been taught a few spells too, but didn’t have a wand, so her learning was completely without practice.

Lea looked helplessly at Lucius, shaking her head, “I know the letters, not the words.” She wanted to learn to read more than anything, but knew that no one would help her. She wanted to learn the spells that should have been her birthright, but that would take a wand, which was far down the road after she made enough money to leave the prison. Her illiteracy had helped to condemn her to her position, because the Warden had told her he had a document saying she had to work off her mother’s debts. There was no such document, but Lea couldn’t read the paper to refute him.

“Have you lived here all your life then?” asked Lucius. At her age she should still have been in school.

“I was born here,” she replied.

It suddenly all clicked for Lucius. She was the old prison whore’s daughter and had taken her place when she died. The old whore had mentioned a daughter. So she truly wasn’t an inmate like he was. But it looked like she was trapped just as effectively by her poverty. He wondered who her father had been - an inmate, perhaps? Or the Warden, himself? No, the Warden wouldn’t have made his own daughter the prison whore. Well, it was unlikely, at any rate, Lucius thought cynically.

Had she taken the job voluntarily, or had she been coerced? His conscience felt a slight twinge, but his fertile brain whispered that she could be bought for his use. He’d already had her and he liked her body’s effect on him, making him feel twenty years younger and randy with it.

“Would you like to learn to read? I could instruct you. If you are willing to meet my price.” Lucius scented a victory from the look on her face. He looked directly into her wide blue eyes and kept his own eyes locked on hers.

Lea was taken aback by his offer. She had an excellent idea of what the price would be, but she didn’t understand why he would want to teach her to read when she had to give him any sex he wanted anyway. Where was the catch? “And this price is…?”

Lucius was a bit startled at her calm question. He thought she’d be overcome with her fear response, but it seemed he was wrong. “I want sex on demand, of course, whichever way I prefer at the moment, but I also want your presence in my apartments unless I ask you to leave. Then I will specify when you are to return. I want exclusive use of your body. You are not to service anyone else unless I command it.” Lucius added that last bit for effect and he wasn’t long in getting it.

Lea shuddered with fear and distaste at being at the mercy of more strangers and unable to save herself. But hope took root in her heart and she gathered all the courage that had seen her through her horrific life so far. Her body seemed to be her bargaining chip with this rich wizard, and so she met his bluntness with her own, “You will have to negotiate that with the Warden. He has papers that say I must work off my mother’s debt. If you pay that off, I can do everything you want for one galleon a month, except that last one.” She said fiercely, “The moment my mother’s debt is paid off, I and only I will sell or give my body to whom I choose. If you purchase its use in return for reading lessons, it will be a business trade between us. And we will need to have an end to our arrangement. When I have learned to read to my satisfaction, our agreement will have to end, or we will have to discuss what we want from each other again.”

Lucius was dumbfounded. That hadn’t happened very often in his life and he was as entertained as he was angry at her attempts to deal with him. He shrewdly suspected that the old git of a Warden hadn’t any such papers against her, and so no money would change hands there. He had no intention of sharing her in any case, so he lost nothing there, either. The ‘deal’ should have been a total win for him at the cost of only a few galleons.

But having their deal end when she learned to read was a completely different set of affairs. He already saw that she was smart as a whip if basely ignorant. It would probably not be long before she had mastered reading enough to end their agreement. He wouldn’t have much more to offer her than additional money at that point, and if she had money she would leave him and the prison.

Lucius decided that by that time he would probably be tired of her anyway, so he put out his hand to seal their agreement. Lea wanted his agreement in writing but knew she couldn’t read it anyway, so she shook hands with him and hoped he had a bit more honor than trading sex for reading lessons had so far shown. Ultimately she would be no worse off than before and she would have some money and lovely food and amazing surroundings in the meantime. She smiled briefly at him and then the smile disappeared as if it had never been.

Lucius was quite literally dazzled by the sudden smile that sat so strangely on her somber face. It was as though a sun had appeared and then hidden again. And her clasp in their handshake was making his cock awaken. He wanted more of her attentions, and found himself hoping for another smile like a stupid schoolboy. Thoroughly disgusted with himself for his reaction, he scowled at her. Her response was predictable if unwelcome. Her face closed in on itself and she started to distance herself mentally again, as if waiting for a blow.

Lucius erased his scowl with an effort and after letting go of her hand, left the room. He wanted her back mentally with him because he had plans for the afternoon that didn’t include reading lessons. She was so damned prickly he was going to be by turns intrigued, annoyed, amused, and downright furious with her, but he didn’t think he was going to be bored or lonely for quite awhile.

To Nemesis and Gaps of Misery: Thank you for your comments. I appreciate the feedback.

Besides the physical allure of Lucius Malfoy, I'm fascinated by his devious and ferociously intelligent mind and how it is used against others. I like matching him against worthy opponents. For all that I can thank Jason Isaacs for his ability to bring so much to a character who really only has had a few moments of screen time so far (HP movies 2-CoS and 4-GoF). An amazing actor.
