Chapter 9: Threats

~^~

Hermione woke up and realised Draco was gone, gone to get married. There was something about him that she couldn\'t reach, as if he had two sides. She loved one side, but hated the other. Was it possible to love and hate someone at the same time?

They\'d made love last night and this time she really wanted to. The first time was... well it was odd. She hated Draco with all her heart, but was terribly attracted to him. It was as if she loved the fact that he had a bad side. Of course, she\'d hated herself after. But, she couldn\'t deny that there were things that made him different than she imagined. For example: his overwhelming sweetness. When she sat on that chair, naked, she saw the shock in his eyes. She saw the utter disgust he had for Voldemort, the Death Eaters, and Pansy.

She did not understand how someone could live amongst people they hated willingly. That was the strange part about Draco. Also, there was another thing that she couldn\'t put her finger on. A secret maybe, but there was definitely more to Draco than she knew and expected.

To love and hate a person isn\'t easy, Hermione realised that now. She was disgusted of herself and him. How could she betray \'her people\' like this? Of course, she had this

plan- that failed miserably when she realised she cared about him. Love your enemy; you must be insane if you love your enemy. Of course there\'s that proverb, \'There\'s a thin line between love and hate\', and well it was really thin here!

Hermione sighed and held her head in her hands. There was a soft knock on the door, making her frown. Draco was the first person that crossed her mind, but it couldn\'t be Draco. He was getting married.

The door opened slowly, and revealed ringring of red hair.

\"Ginny!\" Hermione exclaimed, when she realised who it was.

Ginny quickly closed the door behind her and walked towards Hermione, who was still sitting on the bed. \"I\'ve missed you. You haven\'t visited us for a while, are you ok?\" Ginny asked, pulling Hermione into a hug.

\"I\'m fine!\" Hermione said, trying to sound happy.

\"He didn\'t... hurt you... did he?\" Ginny asked concerned, climbing on the bed as well.

\"No!\" Hermione said quickly, biting her lip. \"No, he didn\'t hurt me.\"

\"Then what is it?\" Ginny asked, grabbing her hand. \"I know something\'s bothering you. I can see it in your eyes.\"

\"It\'s... I can\'t tell you Ginny. I\'m too embarrassed to tell you. You\'ll hate me, everybody will hate me if they knew,\" Hermione said, putting her hair into a bun.

\"Is it that bad?\" Ginny asked concerned, biting her lip. \"I wish you could tell me. You know I would never hate you, Mione. You\'re my best friend.\"

Hermione sighed and looked down at her lap. She really did want to get this off her chest. It was a burden to carry it alone and she needed some advise. \"I...I love him,\" Hermione stuttered, while trying to fight the tears from coming into her eyes.

\"Who do you love?\" Ginny asked, crawling closer to her best friend.

\"Draco. -Ginny gasped at this- I love Draco,\" Hermione said, burying her face into her hands once again. \"It\'s so confusing. I\'m supposed to hate him and I really do, but I love him as well. He\'s not what you think he is, he really isn\'t!\"

\"Hermione, he\'s a Death Eater. He\'s exactly what I think he is,\" Ginny said, clenching her jaw.

\"You don\'t understand... He\'s not acting like one. I thought he would have raped me by now, or humiliate me in every possible way, but he didn\'t. He took care of me. He even protected me from Voldemort. I think he\'s really capable of caring,\" Hermione tried to explain.

Ginny just shook her head. \"I don\'t understand. I thought you loved my brother. I\'m not going to judge you on this, because you\'re a clever girl. But Draco Malfoy?\"

\"I do love Ron, but not in that way. I loved him, but we weren\'t getting anywhere. Draco\'s really sweet in a weird kind of way. Like when you\'re alone with him. I think he\'s not that evil himself. He\'s just forced to be. Oh God, I really do love him. And now he\'s getting married to Pansy. He hates her, but Voldemort wants him to. Voldemort wants them to produce an heir. She\'s such a bitch, I really feel sorry for Draco. I heard them arguing and she has him trapped. If he refuses to marry her or have sex with her, she\'ll tell Voldemort,\" Hermione said, looking pleadingly towards Ginny.

\"And what if she tells Voldemort? I thought Draco was his heir...?\" Ginny asked.

\"Well that\'s the point I don\'t get either. Apparently, Draco doesn\'t have anything to say about his whole life and Voldemort agrees with Pansy, so he\'ll punish Draco... or something like that. I wouldn\'t want to fight Voldemort either,\" Hermione said, sighing deeply.

\"You really love him, don\'t you?\" Ginny asked, putting her head on Hermione\'s shoulder.

Hermione nodded, but remained silent.

\"And I thought my love was impossible,\" Ginny suddenly grinned.

Hermione frowned and eyed her oddly. \"Did I miss something here?\" she asked, raising her eyebrows.

Ginny\'s cheeks flushed deep red, as she tried to hide her smile.

\"Gin! Tell me!\" Hermione exclaimed, slapping her friend softly.

\"Promise you won\'t laugh?\" Ginny asked, suddenly serious.

Hermione nodded and put her hand on her heart.

\"Ok, well over the summer Harry stayed with us,\" Ginny began her story.

Hermione rolled her eyes. \"I should have known! Well go on!\"

Ginny glared at her for a second before continuing her story. \"Anyway, I couldn\'t sleep one night. So, I went downstairs to get a cup of tea for myself. To my surprise I saw Harry stand outside, watching the stars. He looked kind of sad, so I went to him-well after I paced through the kitchen for half a hour, that is. I asked him if there was something wrong. He just shook his head, so I offered to make him a cup of tea. He said that he would like that. It was really freezing outside and he was standing there in his pyjamas. I told him it was better e cae came with me to the kitchen. He didn\'t respond, so I grabbed his hand, which was ice-cold. He turned around slowly and out of nowhere, he pulled me into a hug. At first I was shocked, I never expected him to do such a thing. When he pulled back from the hug, he just kissed me. We\'ve been together since,\" Ginny said, blushing slightly.

\"Now I know why he kept walking away suddenly and then come back all flushed,\" Hermione laughed.

\"I trust you \'Mione, just make sure you don\'t make a wrong decision. It\'s good to follow your heart, but don\'t rely on it too much. Promise me that,\" Ginny said seriously.

Hermione nodded. \"I\'m glad we had this conversation Gin,\" she said thankfully.

\"Me too. I\'ve got to get back, take care!\" Ginny said, jumping from the bed and walking out of the door again.

Hermione sighed happily. She was just lying back again when there was another knock on the door. Hermione smiled and jumped out of the bed; quickly scanning the room for something Ginny might have forgotten to take back with her.

\"What is it.\" Hermione said cheerfully, but her voice trailed off when she saw who was standing in the doorway. It was as if her heart wouldn\'t beat again and her lungs wouldn\'t take in any air.

\"Hello Mrs Granger, how are you doing today?\" An ice-cold voice drawled.

Hermione\'s eyes widened with fear, but she refused to show it. \"I wish I could say I\'m doing fine, but since you\'re here I\'m not.\" Hermione spat, glaring bravely at the ugly man/creature in front of her. For a second she wondered if she could call the \'thing\' in front of her human, but pushed the thought away.

\"Mind your tongue, you young foolish girl,\" Voldemort said threateningly, grabbing her arm in very tight grip.

Hermione cursed herself anied ied not to cry out in pain when Voldemort dug his nails in her upper arm.

As quickly as he grabbed her arm, he let go of it and marched into the room. Hermione however stayed where she was. She wanted to be close to the door so she had the opportunity to flee if he tried to harm her, which she was quite sure he would. She\'d never seen Voldemort so close and wondered why he was here. A scared feeling blocked her heart from beatinr thr the second time as she remembered the conversation between Draco and Voldemort not long ago. He wanted her... in his bed... She bit her tongue and clapped her hand over her mouth to prevent herself from screaming.

\"Come here, Mudblood!\" Voldemort sneered, taking his wand out of his pocket and pointing it towards Hermione. \"There are a few things we need to discuss.\"

Hermione followed his orders slowly as she walked towards the couch. She carefully sat down on the couch he was pointing to, not wanting to touch his hand, which was trying to push her back to her place. If it had been Draco, Ron or even Harry she would have leaned into the touch, but she did not want to touch this creep unless sas fas forced to.

Voldemort, who noticed this, smirked at her. He occupied the seat next to Hermione, who shifted uncomfortable. \"That\'s better,\" he said, still smirking. \"Now, tell me, Ms Granger, what is going on between you and Draco Malfoy?\"

\"Nothing!\" Hermione said a little too loud and a little too fast.

Voldemort raised his eyebrows. \"You know... I think you\'re not telling me the truth. I know Draco\'s attracted to you, but what about you? What is Draco doing to your heart?\" he traced Hermione\'s cheekbone with his long, pale finger. Hermione clenched her jaw and pulled away immediately.

\"That is none of your busin\" H\" Hermione spat, disgusted by Voldemort in every possibly way.

\"Oh, but I think it is. See there are many people, including Mrs Parkinson and myself, who\'re not happy at all about this \'thing\' between the two of you. It, whatever it is, has to be over,\" Voldemort sneered, standing up and standing in front of Hermione.

\"I don\'t know what you\'re talking about,\" Hermione snapped, looking the other way.

Voldemort grabbed her chin and forced her to look at him. Once again, his nails dug into her skin; this time drawing blood. Hermione felt the blood slid down her neck and clenched her jaw so that she wouldn\'t show any reaction.

\"That is not the way to talk to me, you silly girl!\" Voldemort bellowed, slapping her in the face. \"I think you misunderstood me.\"

Hermione let out a soft sob. \"I understand. I understand. It will stop,\" Hermione said desperately, still feeling the sharp pain of his nails in her cheeks.

\"I don\'t want it to stop. I want it to be over. You know what the difference is?\" Voldemort asked, raising his eyebrow.

Hermione shook her head, while she couldn\'t fight the tears anymore. Slowly her eyes filled with unshed tears until they found their way down her cheeks.

\"I\'ll explain it to you. To stop something doesn\'t mean it\'s over. If I kill you -at this Hermione gasped- I would stop it. However, Draco\'s affection, or whatever it is, would still be there. The same happens when I separate you, you two will still feel the same towards each other. I want it to be gone completely. I want it to be over!\" Voldemort scowled. \"I do not intend on having a muggle-loving heir.\"

Hermione just nodded, not knowing what to say to him. She was so scared that she\'d lost the ability to think clearly. She didn\'t even remove the blood from her neck and face. It was as if she was in some kind of trance.

\"Now... I don\'t care if you still have feelings for Draco, but I want Draco\'s feelings for you gone! And that is exactly what you are going to do for me,\" Voldemort said, taking his place next to Hermione again. \"Now, here\'s what you\'re going to do. You are going to have a relationship with me and break Draco\'s heart. Do you understand?\"

\"Now why would I do that?\" Hermione asked, getting herself together again. \"I would rather die before I leu lau lay one finger on me or co-operate in one of your nasty plans!\"

\"Oh really?\" Voldemort asked amused, which frightened Hermione. \"I guessed you would say that. See you don\'t find it hard to kill yourself, but I don\'t think you\'re able of killing someone else. That\'s why I made sure you would work with me.... BRING HIM IN!\"

Hermione looked to the door, which opened. Ron was thrown into the room and collapsed on the floor. Hermione tried to stand up, but Voldemort held her down.

Ron looked in horrible condition. Hermione was sure they had cast one of the unforgivables on him, since she knew the symptoms. \"RON! Let me go!\" she yelled, \"RON! LET ME GO!\"

However, Ron didn\'t answer, nor did he move one bit.

\"What did you do to him?\" she yelled to Voldemort, while tears were streaming down her face.

Voldemort just grinned, while he held her down firmly. \"Now, here\'s the deal. You work with and and your little red-haired friend lives. You work against me, he dies. It\'s as simple as that,\" Voldemort grinned.

\"I hate you!\" Hermione spat, trying to slap him.

\"I\'ll take that as a yes. Mrs Parkinson is going to be so happy, because she\'ll be the one who\'ll take care of the heartbroken Draco,\" Voldemort said, giving her a fake smile. \"Take him away.\"

\"No! Ron!\" Hermione yelled again, trying to get Voldemort off her. \"You bastard!\"

\"Hold your tongue!\" Voldemort hissed, pointing his wand to her.

Hermione gulped and hid her face in her hands.

\"Let\'s get to the point. You\'re seeking for power, you find me terribly attractive and you think I rock your world,\" Voldemort said, laughing hly.hly.

Hermione raised her eyebrows. \"You are such a fool! Do you really think Draco\'s going to believe that? He knows I\'ll never do such a thing,\"

\"My Lord, with all due respect. I think she\'s right,\" A third voice said behind them.

Hermione and Voldemort turned around to find Lucius Malfoy standing in the doorway.

Voldemort moved his wand to Lucius. \"Who gave you permission to speak? Crucio!\"

Lucius Malfoy doubled on the floor, obviously trying not to make any sound. Voldemort broke the curse and Lucius stood up again, this time paler than usual.

\"Now,\" Voldemort smirked. \"What do you suggest?\"

\"My Lord, Draco is a clever boy. It would be better to find somebody more... more...\" Lucius struggled with his words.

\"Attractive?\" Voldemort finished his sentence, with mock surprise in his voice.

\"No, my lord,\" Lucius said quickly, but Voldemort wouldn\'t let him speak.

\"I know what that Potter did to me! I know I\'m not so attractive as I used to be. That\'s why you are going to be her new lover,\" Voldemort smirked, looking back to the shaking Hermione.

Hermione just clenched her jaw and looked away. \'Look on the bright side... He\'s more attractive than Voldemort...OH GOD! This is so bad!\' she thought.

\"Lucius, take her to your room. We\'ll figure out what to tell Draco later on,\" Voldemort ordered, walking out of the room.

Hermione sat there, waiting until Lucius pointed her wand to her and ordered her to come with him. Somehow it took a second longer than she expected. She looked Lucius in his eyes, but he avoided her gaze.

Frowning, she did as she was told.

*

In the meantime, Draco was trying to act as happy as possible, being congratulated by over a hundred Death Eaters. He wondered if he would be able to sneak up to Hermione, but Pansy was clinging to him every second of the party. She kept telling him how much she looked forward to that night. It was the one thing Draco dreaded even more than marrying her.

He kept telling himself that when this was all over he could be with Hermione and that he would make an attack possible from the light side on Hogwarts. It could be over in a few days, if he would collect valuable information and since he didn\'t feel like staying with Pansy 24/7, he would spend more time with Voldemort.

Besides, the light side would have to attack before all the dark creatures were transferred to Hogwarts. He didn\'t know when, but it would be soon. Soon everything would be over. The whole marriage wouldn\'t even exist anymore.

He just hoped he wasn\'t killn thn the battle, but he was prepared to give his life. The life he had now wasn\'t worth living.

Draco looked around to find his father, but he couldn\'t find him anywhere. Nor did he find Voldemort. He raised his eyebrows and turned to Pansy.

\"Where did our Lord go and my father?\" he asked her.

She looked slightly taken back, but recovered before Draco could even register it. \"Probably doing business. You know how they are,\" Pansy said, waving her hands casually.

Draco nodded, and looked around to find someone else he could have a decent conversation with, or find out some valuable information. If he wanted to get information, starting right away would be better.

\"Dracy, let\'s go now,\" Pansy purred in his ear.

Draco pulled a face, making her glare. \"I need to talk to someone,\" he said, giving her a fake smile.

Pansy sneered slightly, before Draco took back his arm, which she was holding tightly and rushed away. He would do anything to postpone that moment. He knew it was going to happen sooner or later, but he would rather have it later.
