Chapter 9
Time passed as it always does and soon it was the middle of November. Evan was almost two months along and was loving every minute of it, well except the morning sickness. Things had quieted down a bit and there were only a couple of demon attacks. He had also steered clear of Malfoy and had spent some time talking with Hermione.
He was beginning to think something was off with her, she wasn’t at all the way he remembered her. At times she talked very fondly of Harry, as though she never believed he had killed anyone. At other times she talked as if he was the scum of the earth. It was all very confusing. He had at times even talked to Wyatt about it worried, she might have figured out who he was.
They both figured that was unlikely and decided it had to be something else and even wondered if she was under some type of spell. He and Wyatt had even gone so far as to talk to Snape about it. That had been enlightening to say the least.
888 Flashback 888
“Professor Snape, may we speak with you for a bit?” Wyatt asked as he and Evan entered the room. “Do you have some spare time?”
“Actually I have a little time if the two of you don’t mind my grading some papers.” Evan was shocked to hear the civil tone coming from Snape. Remus and Sirius had told him the man had changed after he had been bonded to Hermione, but he didn’t really believe them.
“We were here to ask you about your wife, if you don’t mind answering some questions?” Wyatt said.
“Not at all, what is it you would like to know?” Professor Snape asked the two of them.
“Well, lately I have noticed that she tends to have two extremes when talking about her friend Harry. Has it always been that way or could there be something forcing her to act that way?” Evan said to the Professor.
“Since before we married she was like that. Actually has been since the end of her fourth year here. I always wondered whether she thought he had done it or not. I admit I never thought he could have and actually my respect for him grew when instead of turning on the light for treating him so poorly he defeated the dark giving our world peace. He didn’t even stick around to reap the benefits of his actions; instead he left and went into hiding, and has not been heard from since. I don’t blame him for that, well not anymore. His godfather actually beat some sense into me on that account.
Hermione had taken it hard when he left, but shortly after had gone to hating him. At times she would cry for him and say it wasn’t fair what we did to him. Then she would say hurtful things about him. She and I actually had a secret relationship before the bond was forced on us, we had gotten together after one of the many times I spent comforting her, and I found out a little to late what Weasley and her were going to do and tried to stop them. After the bond was forced Hermione treated me like I was the scum of the earth. Nothing like how we had interacted with each other before this happened.”
888 End of Flashback 888
Evan and Wyatt found out that day that Hermione and Snape had talked about bonding and having children. Then Hermione changed and wanted nothing like she had dreamed with him. He had told them that she felt he didn’t love her though he was constantly trying to remind her of how much he cared for her. He still wanted children with her, but she was convinced she didn’t want them with him.
This convinced Evan even more that she was under some type of spell and from the sounds of it had been since the end of fourth year. It sounded like someone was putting these thoughts into her head and he decided today he was going to figure out how they were doing it, if they were.
Telling Wyatt where he was going he left in search of his once friend to find his answers. He ended up finding her in her classroom grading papers, knocked on the door to get her attention, and was surprised when she just glared at him.
“I was wondering if I could talk to you in private if you have the time.” He knew she was done with classes for the day and decided to take a chance.
“Fine, where would you like to go?” She said while still glaring at him.
“Wherever you will be most comfortable.” He said, glad he had grabbed his own wand. Though he could use his dad’s just fine, he preferred his own as he got better results and he wouldn’t underestimate Hermione, not when it could put his child’s life in danger.
“Well then let’s go to my quarters. My husband might be there, but he will probably be in his lab.” Evan noticed the way she spat the word husband and almost felt sorry for Snape. He knew the man loved her and was devastated that she didn’t feel the same for him as she once had. He really hoped he was right about the spell, as it would put the Snape’s marriage back to how it should be.

They had just gotten to Hermione’s quarters and walked in. Evan was surprised to see Snape sitting in an armchair drinking a cup of, what he thought smelled like tea, judging by the way is stomach was reacting he was probably correct. It seemed tea was one of the things that set off his morning sickness.
“You should go, Mr. James wants to talk to me in private and frankly I don’t want to be in your presence more than necessary.” She said while glaring at her husband.
Evan saw the look that crossed Snape’s face and actually did feel sorry for him. All he could think was how he would feel if Wyatt talked to him like that, it would break his heart. “Actually I think he should stay as this concerns him as your husband.” Evan said while watching Hermione’s reaction.
“Fine, let him stay. What is it you wanted to discuss?”
“Actually I wanted to run a scan on you to see if there were some sort of potions running through your system, or if there was a spell placed on you no one knew about. The scans are more powerful than ones normally used, so should be able to pick up on something others may have missed.” As he said this he saw a look of hope cross the older man’s face and the look of skepticism cross Hermione's.
“I guess you can do this, but it is a waste of time.” She said.
He told her to lay on the couch and pulled out his wand. He heard a gasp come from the other man in the room and knew he had been found out. The fact that Hermione didn’t recognize the wand made him even more sure she was under a spell.
He began the scan and was not surprised when he found something clouding her brain. It was a dark substance and from what he could tell it came from a potions he had ingested about a week ago. Suddenly everything made sense.
Someone had been drugging her and had started at the end of their fourth year. The times she was kind when she was with Snape were times when the potions didn’t have any affect or had not been taken. The question was how were they getting into her system.
He was about to just use his magic to cancel the affects when he noticed something, he put a temporary stasis charm on her so she could think clearly, like herself, and looked at the two in the room.
“There has been a potion affecting her and it looks to be a dark one. I would be able to cancel the affects, and have for now put a temporary stasis on you to keep the affects at bay, but you are what looks like three months pregnant. Assuming by your face you didn’t know. The problem with the potion is that it will terminate the pregnancy tonight at midnight and the amount of magic it would take to counteract it would also kill the baby. And with my pregnancy it would take to much magic from my baby to continue to put the temporary stasis on you.”
Hermione, who felt more like herself than she had in a long time, began to cry. She wanted this child, by the looks of her husband he knew exactly what the potion was, and it wasn’t good.
Severus turned to his wife and decided to give her what would be even worse news. “That is not all Hermione, losing the baby because of the potion will also make you infertile.” He wanted to cry himself when he saw his wife break down in front of him, but continued “there is a potion to counteract it, but that too will kill the child and make you infertile.” As he said this a tear rolled down his cheek as he realized there was no way to save his baby. He and Hermione would never get to be parents and that broke his heart.
It was then Evan got an idea. “Severus do you have the directions for the potions somewhere?” Severus nodded and got off the couch where he had been holding his wife trying to comfort her. Evan looked at the two of them, “I am going to go but I will be right back with some people who might be able to help us.” That said he got up out of his chair and went to find the two best potion makers in his family and his fiancé. He would need Wyatt to help comfort Hermione and Chris and Piper were the best when it came to Wiccan potions. They just might be able to find a way to save the baby.
When he returned he brought with him Piper and Chris who immediately went with Severus into his private lab to try and find a way to modify the potion using Wiccan and Wizarding ingredients. He had also run into Albus and explained the situation so Albus and Wyatt had gone with them to help care for Hermione. He was also going to help try to figure out who was drugging her.
They still didn’t know who had done it and hadn’t seen the three brewing the potion at five minutes to minutes to midnight. Hermione had pretty much curled up into herself and the others could tell she had given up hope of finding a way to save her child. Wyatt was sitting in one of the armchairs with Evan half asleep on his lap. Evan had been holding the stasis charm on Hermione and feeding what he wasn’t using on her to his baby. Wyatt was really starting to worry, if he didn’t stop the charm Evan would be the one to suffer, as he knew his lover would never stop giving his magic to their baby.
Just then the door to the lab opened and the three tired potions brewers walked out of the lab. Snape walked over to Hermione and knelt in front of her. “Love I think we may have a potion that will help save the baby. It is the only chance we have but you have to drink it now.”
Hermione took it from him and downed it in one gulp. Evan instantly felts the affects of the first potion leave and was finally able to drop the charm. When the charm was dropped he passed out in Wyatt’s arms, no longer able to keep himself awake, as he had left no magic for his own body to run off of. All his that was left was going to the baby.
Hermione fell right asleep, one of the potions side affects. Snape scooped her up and looked at Wyatt who was holding Evan. He knew how far away their rooms were and didn’t want the other man to have to carry Evan that far. “There is a guest room right over there,” he said pointing at a closed door, “why don’t you two sleep in there tonight.”
Wyatt nodded and said a quick goodnight to his mother, brother, and the headmaster before taking his fiancé into the room and putting him to bed. He went back to the sitting room just as Snape came out of the master bedroom and found they were the only two left.
“Did he hold the charm on her all night?” Snape asked when he saw the younger man.
“Yeah he did. Had me real worried for a while there. He usually doesn’t deplete his magic like that, but when he does he will sleep the entire night and tire easily for the next couple of days, probably longer because he will make sure plenty of his magic is going to the baby. Speaking of babies did the potion work?”
“We won’t know until morning. The affects of the potion are gone but as to whether or not the baby survived, we will just have to wait. What made him think to combine the different types of ingredients? I would have never expected something like that out of him as he was terrible in potions when he attended here.”
“So you figured it out then?” Wyatt said and smiled at Snape’s nod. “To answer your question he came up with the idea once when we needed a more potent potion to vanquish a demon. As for his being terrible at potions, you are actually wrong on that account. He studied and passed his OWLs and NEWTs when he went to the U.S. He really does know what he is doing when it comes to magic.”
Severus couldn’t believe someone he and his wife had treated so poorly had risked his own health to save their child. He really didn’t know Potter as well as he thought, but was willing to try and get to know him and his fiancé. It was the least he could do after what Potter had done for him.
He was beginning to think something was off with her, she wasn’t at all the way he remembered her. At times she talked very fondly of Harry, as though she never believed he had killed anyone.
