SUMMARY:
Rose struck out at Malfoy’s ankle with her foot, sending him flying. They both scrambled for the wands and grabbed blindly.
Rose struggled to her feet pointing the wand at Malfoy who was facing her as he got up too. The silence hung thickly as the two teens gathered their breath. At some unknown signal they both yelled the first thing that entered their minds;
“CRUCIO!”
“CRUCIO!”

CHAPTER 9
They stood facing each other; eyes tightly shut.
Nothing happened.
Ice blue eyes met navy blue eyes, and froze with tension.
Rose began to smile; Draco tried to hide his amusement. They both started laughing with relief.
“I think…I’ve got your wand!” Rose giggled.
The wands fell to the floor as the teens collapsed in mirth on the hearthrug as the fire crackled away merrily. Draco reached over and took her hand in his. Rose didn’t pull away. They both sat together in front of the fire exchanging stories until dawn broke.
So preoccupied were they that the noise from outside the portrait hole took them by surprise. Jumping apart they scrambled to their feet and ran for the door.
Standing on the other side were Harry, Ron and Hermione with looks of astonishment on their faces. The smiles on Draco and Rose fell as the trio facing them glared with disdain. Rose pushed Draco away from her,
“See? It’s for me, so you can just go back to your crappy room.” She snarled.
Draco looked startled for a second before his trademark sneer appeared on his face.
“So it is. Dumbledore’s favourite mutants, trying to recruit?”
“Fuck off Malfoy; we came to see Rose, not you, ferret face.” Hermione spat.
“Better than being a Mudblood though, eh Granger?” With that he walked away up the stairs.
Hermione grabbed the back of Ron and Harry’s robes, restraining them from the temptation to kick Malfoy’s arse into the next realm. Turning to Rose she shook her head and pushed her out of the way as she went to the kitchen. Ron advanced toward Rose,
“You traitor. And you call yourself a Dumbledore?” He shoved past her to join Hermione.
Rose stared at the ground, her clenched fists trembling with the anger and sadness conflicting in her mind. Suddenly, she felt someone take her hand. Looking up she saw a pair of deep emerald eyes framed by round lenses.
“Come for a walk with me.” Harry said, and let her from the common room.
The portrait hole closed behind them but the sound of Ron and Hermione arguing could still be heard. They walked in silence, hand in hand out of the school and towards the lake. The sun twinkled on the clear waters as the giant squid lazily raised a tentacle in recognition. Rose shivered in her summer pyjamas as a morning breeze swept in from the lake; Harry took off his robe and wrapped it around her. They continued walking in silence; neither of them wanting to speak. Rounding a corner they bumped into Pansy Parkinson and Blaise Zabini kissing; each couple stared at the other in shock before Pansy grabbed Blaise and walked away. Rose began to giggle, Harry looked at her with a smile on his face as they sat down underneath a willow tree.
“That’s more like it. Now, do you want to tell me what all that was back there?”
Rose’s face fell and she looked at the ground.
“How long were you standing outside the door?” She asked.
“At least five minutes, we heard a fair bit. You know, the stories about your family.”
“Oh, yeah. We just talked, we’re allowed to do that. I have to kinda get on with him, I do have to live with him after all!”
“I know, but Malfoy’s been an enemy of ours for so long that we get suspicious very easily whenever he’s been around. He makes our life hell sometimes, Hermione’s a lot of the time.”
“Oh yes, poor little Hermione.” Rose muttered bitterly.
“Hmm? Did you say something?” Harry asked.
Rose shook her head quickly, she reached out and pushed Harry’s hair aside to see his scar. She traced its shape with a gossamer touch; Harry took her hand in his and kissed it softly. Rose moved closer and Harry wrapped his arms around her. They sat there together until Harry’s wand shot a bubble in the air before him. Hermione’s face appeared in it; glaring at Rose she turned to face Harry.
“Lunch is ready, are you coming in?” She asked.
“Sure, we’ll be there in a minute.” Harry answered; the bubble popped.
Rose stood up and took Harry’s hand again as they walked back towards the castle. If the morning was anything to go by then lunch was bound to be exciting. Rose sighed at the thought of arguing with her cousin again, at least this time she had Harry on her side, that should deflate her cousin’s head a bit. She giggled silently to herself at the idea of Hermione getting taken down a peg or two; the bitter thoughts began to creep back into her mind, except, this time she embraced them with relish. This year people were going to notice her no matter what.
