Chapter 9
Chapter 9
She closed the door behind him and he followed Dumbledore to his office. The argument was intoxicating enough. She had fire and passion. But the tenderness as he left almost did him in.
He saw in her eyes concern and affection for him. He knew it was only a friendly affection, but he couldn’t be choosey now, could he? She cared for him. That was enough.
He sat in a chair opposite of Dumbledore and they sat in silence for a moment. Then Dumbledore handed him a piece of parchment.
“Severus, you can allow others to deal with this matter. The Aurors, Harry in particular, would very much like to handle this. However, given your history, I thought I would give you an opportunity to handle this. But only if you want to.” Dumbledore eyed him over his half moon spectacles.
Albus really didn’t want Severus to go. He had asked too much of him already over the years. But he also knew the raging monster within Severus and knew it would never be put to rest if he wasn’t able to finish this himself, once and for all.
“How trustworthy are your sources?” Severus asked.
“I am sure of it. Bellatrix Lestrange and her husband have been causing chaos all over the wizarding world since Voldemort’s demise. She needs to be stopped. However, I will allow you to decide if you wish to be the one to do it.”
Severus held in his hands his fate. He knew it. Without the Dark Lord around to reign in Bella’s insatiable desire to torture and cause pain, she was a new dark force to be reckoned with. He knew…he was the one that had to do it. Better not let Potter go after her. It would make the Daily Prophet within the hour.
He folded the paper into thirds and placed it in his pocket. He had to do it. He nodded to Dumbledore and rose from his chair to go.
“Severus?” He turned to face his headmaster.
“Shall I alert Professor Browning?” He actually had the audacity to try and hide his smile. Severus felt a growl coming on, but he stifled it. Should he? Better to not involve her really. But she did care about him. She almost told him so tonight. Almost…
Severus nodded his head to Dumbledore and exited his office. Stealing himself for what was sure to be a long night.

A/N: I know...kind of short. But...there is much more to come....
