Chapter 9: Enlightenment
He just didn\'t understand. He thought Lucius was getting better. But now, the taller blonde was sitting up in front of the fireplace, adamantly refusing to explain himself. Shawn sighed a little and began to fix himself a glass of lemonade. When they went horse back riding the other day, Lucius seemed so different.
When riding the horse, he seemed more like a champion equestrian than a man who could still be insane. It almost looked correct- Lucius seemed to be every bit the British gentleman appearance wise, even wearing belted blue jeans and old tee shirts. However, his personality still left alot to be desired despite the recent shocking changes.
Shawn sighed looking down the hallway to where the family room door remained open. He just didn\'t get it. He started to head to the living room to do some cleaning, when a knock came at the front door. Normally when Shawn was on the road with the WWE, he had a staff running the place to take care of any guests. But any time he spent specifically at the ranch, it was closed for the time being so Shawn could relax. He hadn\'t been expecting anyone at the time, but sometimes folks stopped on by having gotten lost on the long stretch of road. And that\'s exactly what he figured when he saw the tall and thin pale man with limp hair, and a young man who bore an incredible likeness to Lucius when he had opened the door. \"Hello...\"
\"Good morning. Do you happen to be housing a man by the name of Lucius Malfoy here?\" The pale man asked in a long, drawling voice. Looking at him, Shawn guessed he must be a very intelligent person, just by the sound of his voice and the way he carried himself. If it wasn\'t for the rather unfortunate mess of dark hair he had, he\'d probably be very attractive.
Even more of a surprise! More Brits, and they were looking for his house guest. \"May I ask who is calling?\"
The boy at his side opened his mouth, but the tall man silenced him with just a wave of his hand. \"An old school friend, and his son.\"
Shawn glanced to him- hell, he was a carbon copy of Lucius now that he looked at him. Which made him a little angry. Lucius had never said he was married, nor that he had a son! If Shawn had known, he\'d had never have kissed him! \"Oh, I uh-- I\'ll get him.\" That bastard- he was going to get him for this. Shawn stormed down the hallway, glaring in on Lucius. \"Your son is here.\"
\"My so- Draco.\" The taller blonde murmured pushing past Shawn and walked quickly down the hallway.
He wondered who the hell named their kid \'Draco\', but then again, his name was Lucius (not pronounced Loosus, but Lu-ci-us as he was told many, many times) so he shouldn\'t be too surprised. He heard the sounds of talking coming from the entrance way, and he knew he should be a good host... But this was aggravating. Then again, he can\'t really judge Lucius-- Who knows? He might be a single father. But still! A son!
---
Draco. My boy. My pride. I\'ve missed him so much this past year, and he\'s looking pretty bad. His eyes light up when he sees me, and I\'m sure mine did the same. But our faces remained the same-- Cold. Malfoys do not express emotions openly. We do it with dignity, and certainately not in front of company. \"Draco- How are you this year?
\"Well, father. I\'m very well.\"
\"And your academics?\"
\"Excelling. Like always.\"
\"What about Quidditch?\" I know Draco would never be the seeker I was back in school, but the boy tries his best. Contrary to most opinion, it is I who spoils him, not Narcissa.
\"I... I didn\'t play a single match this year, father.\"
\"What? Whatever for?\"
\"It\'s a very long story, Lucius. One that you should know.\" Snape murmured then looked to Shawn who wasn\'t looking entirely thrilled at the moment, for whatever reason. \"Excuse me, but do you happen to have a room where the three of us can talk?\"
He nodded and pointed to the room that I had been in earlier. \"You can go right back in the family room-- I won\'t bother you.\" I couldn\'t help noticing that he sounded a little miffed. He pushed past me and went up the stairs.
---
Looking at the long, drawn out expression on my oldest friend\'s face was a little troubling. In the year that I had last seen him, he looked to have aged twenty years. \"Severus, what happened? Your note..\"
\"A lot has changed, Lucius.\" He said sharply, then looked to Draco who was sitting at my side. \"Show him.\"
Draco sighed rolling up his shirt sleeve, showing me what I never, ever wanted to see on him so young. It was the dark mark, a symbol that your life was over before it began. I got mine with Severus when we both turned 18...
\"Draco...\" I murmured looking at the mark marring his pale flesh. \"Why did you let this happen?!\" I shot at Severus well aware of the nasty tone of my voice. \"You were supposed to protect him!\"
\"It\'s not Professor Snape\'s fault!\" Draco shot back. \"If you didn\'t fail your mission he would have never... Never...\" Tears formed in my son\'s eyes, and his face paled tremendously. He whipped away the tears with his palms fiercely then looked at me with an anger that I\'ve never seen in him before. \"He told me he\'d kill you and mother if I didn\'t do exactly what he said!\"
I was just about as pale as Draco was right now- and that was a quite feat, believe me.
\"It\'s all because you failed and got thrown in jail! I wouldn\'t have had to become a death eater, and I wouldn\'t have had to quit school because of it!\"
\"Draco!\" Snape snapped at my son, and instantly he clamed up. He had that power about him that commanded your full attention- that you never, ever disobey him. Only the foolish ever did. My son instantly calmed down, with the addition of hot tears spilling down his face.
\"What happened, Severus?\" I asked using the years of practice we Malfoys have in emotional oppression. My son is crying but I can\'t show how I feel about it; I want to do something for him, but even if I did, I wouldn\'t know what to do.
\"Because you failed in the Ministry, Voldemort was, to say the least, violent. He decided to take revenge for it upon Draco, giving him a mission in which he couldn\'t succeeded in. And because he could not do the task, he WOULD kill you and Narcissa.\"
I gapped a little, highly confused. The Malfoys have shown nothing but perfect willingness to our lord, why would he ever feel to do strike out so violently against us? \"Wh-What?\"
\"The assassination of Dumbledore.\"
\"Draco!\" I shouted looking to him in shock. That was a suicide mission if I ever heard one! But I am still here... so...
\"I couldn\'t do it!\" He wailed grabbing one of the pillows to let out awful sobs. \"I couldn\'t kill him, father. I couldn\'t do it, I couldn\'t... I couldn\'t...\" He had begun to shake now do to the force of his cries.
\"Then...\" I looked to Severus\'s vacant stare trying to find the words. \"Severus...\"
\"Yes, Lucius. I know Draco couldn\'t do the deed- No death eater before him could, and certainately not a young boy such as Draco would ever be able to complete such a task. Though, he did try very hard.\"
\"I don\'t want to be a death eater- I... I don\'t want to kill people, father! Every time I think about it I get so sick I.. I can\'t...\" Draco lurched forward like he was going to retch, but it was just a dry heave. \"I don\'t want to go to war!\"
I looked at Draco\'s pale, sick face soaking with tears and my heart froze. I did the first thing that came to my mind which was hug my son. I held him tight against me-- as if he\'d disappear. I don\'t think he knew what I was doing at first- maybe he thought I was trying to smother him. But then it dawned on him and he hugged back, soaking one of Shawn\'s tee shirts thoroughly with his tears. When Severus and I joined, we had each other to lean on. It\'s always easier when you have a friend, but none of the others had boys being forced in at 16. Draco\'s all alone.
---
Shawn who was very well known for his busybody ways was perched outside of the door, trembling. To his credit, Shawn was bringing glasses of lemonade for them. He didn\'t understand what they were talking about fully, but for the most part... He was housing a man in some sort of crazy group that just assassinated someone! Wh-What if they all came to his ranch and killed him too? Lucius had been calling him a muggle, and he knew it wasn\'t a compliment.
\"I don\'t want to be a death eater- I... I don\'t want to kill people, father! Every time I think about it I get so sick I.. I can\'t... I don\'t want to go to war!\"
His hands trembled on the tray, shaking so much that he dropped the tray with a clattering crash. The kid couldn\'t have been more than 16-17 years old and he was in on this practice?! He should have NEVER taken Lucius into his home. He was too nice for his own good!
He had to grab some things, his car, and all the money he had. They could have the ranch and every thing else as long as Shawn was allowed to live.
He took off down the hallway racing for the stairs in the main foyer. Just some clothes, some jeans, and a few precious mementos-- that\'s it.
Shawn leapt up the stairs just as he heard Lucius\'s commanding voice for him to stop.
Of course, stopping anywhere outside of 50 miles away from here was not in Shawn\'s plan. He was half way to his room when a hot blinding sensation enclosed him and everything went completely black.
