Chapter 9: The Goodbye

Hermione snuck quietly into her dormitories, trying desperately not to disturb her sleeping room mates. A smile seemed to be permanently glued to her face as thoughts of she and Remus’ earlier ‘get together’ in the room of requirements played in her head. Hermione had managed to make it to her bed before she heard Lily’s voice from across the room.

“Where did you disappear to tonight”? Lily asked knowingly.

“Just a small walk with Remus”. Hermione answered a little too quickly. She was sure the blush on her face was glowing in the pitch darkness of the room.

“Uh huh…is that what they call it now a days”. Hermione heard Alice chime in.

“Just because I took a walk with Remus does not mean we did anything of the sort”. Hermione answered defensively.

“I would believe you, but that smile glued on your face gave it away the second you walked in. Now, spill the details before we have to go beat it out of Remus”. Lily demanded.

Hermione knew she was beaten once again. These girls would stop at nothing to drag the information out of her. “Ok”. Hermione gave in.

She told the long story about him taking her to the room of requirements. Lily and Alice were very attentive through the whole story. It wasn’t until Hermione had finished that they began throwing questions at her.

“So, when do you think he’ll ask you to marry him”? Alice asked

Hermione was a bit shocked by this answer. She wanted to laugh, but contained herself. “I don’t think either of us are thinking about marriage”. Hermione answered. “We’ve only be ‘seeing’ one another a few weeks”.

“Yes, but I can tell he likes you very much”. Alice replied.

“Oh, Alice leave her alone about that. Not everyone gets married strait out of school”. Lily answered. “But, while we’re on the subject, do you think you’ll marry him”?

Hermione honestly had no idea how to answer this. If she were truly from this time, marriage to Remus Lupin would definitely be a possibility. Seeing as how she was nearly twenty years younger than he in her own time, it didn’t seem very likely. Though, she wouldn’t say no to the future Professor Lupin either.

“I’m not sure, we’ll just have to see where our relationship takes us”. Hermione thought it was fare answer, though she knew it didn’t satisfy Alice and Lily, they thankfully dropped the topic.

After a few more minutes of conversation the girls finally decided to fall asleep. Hermione slept well that night, her thoughts and dreams filled with the one man she loved, and the sorrow that she would soon have to leave this place and return to her own time. ‘The sooner the better’ she continued to tell herself.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Remus and Hermione continued their late night visits to the room of requirements, each visit intensified their relationship. Hermione would always return to the group of giggling girls after her late night adventures where they would stay up half the night talking about what events had taken place that evening.

Hermione’s favorite thing that Remus continuously did was write her letters. After the one class they had separately, Remus would always slip a love note into Hermione’s hand when passing her in the hall. This melt Hermione’s heart to a point of pure boiling love, she was becoming so attached.

It wasn’t until a few weeks after Hermione and Remus had become so close that trouble began to come. The boys would were always crouched over a map in the common room after dinner every evening. They were looking over the Marauder’s map.

It was about the third week of Hermione’s arrival when she found that the Marauder’s map was going to give her some trouble. She had walked into the common room finding Remus alone looking over the map.

“Hello, Remus”. Hermione greeted him cheerfully walking over to sit beside him on the couch.

Remus jumped in surprise and confusion. “Hermione, I didn’t see you coming”. Remus studied the map more carefully.

“Really”? Hermione asked looking over Remus’ shoulder to see her name was not on the map. This sent Hermione into a panic.

“That’s odd”. Remus stated.

“What’s that you’re looking at”? Hermione asked playing dumb, hoping to distract his attention away from the map.

“It’s a map that shows everyone’s location within this castle”. Remus stated. “You seem to be missing. I don’t know how that’s possible”.

“Well, maybe it’s a flaw, even the best wizards mess up sometimes”. Hermione was searching for excuses.

“No, it’s not possible for someone to be missing”. Remus stated.

“Well, maybe it’s because I am new, and the map hasn’t noticed my presence…” Hermione knew this sounded completely ridiculous, but she was at a loss.

“No, even the ghosts are present on this map”. Remus stated. “Where exactly is it that you originally came from”? Remus asked.

“I’m not able to tell you at this time”. Hermione answered thinking quickly. “I’m to keep all that information secret to keep those around me safe”. Hermione felt a wave of stupidity hit her after the words left her lips.

“That doesn’t explain the fact that you don’t exist”! Remus was practically yelling.

“Look, there’s a lot about my life I can’t tell you right now…”Hermione began, she was close to tears and her words were trembling.

“How can you say that”? Remus demanded. “I am in love with you, and have been since the moment I saw you in the hospital wing. You know my darkest secret, but you can’t tell me yours. What are you so afraid of”?

Hermione felt guilty, she knew she should tell him everything, he deserved to know. Tears were building up in her eyes, threatening to spill at any moment.

“If there’s no trust in our relationship, then I don’t think we should continue to see on another”. Remus stood up and left. Hermione let the tears run freely. She ran up to the dormitories and was shortly joined by a concerned Alice and Lily.

“We heard what happened”. Lily said sitting down next to Hermione, putting a comforting arm around her. “I’m sure he’s just in a bad mood, the full moon is tomorrow night.

This brightened Hermione’s spirits a bit. Maybe he was just in a bad mood, and just overreacting because of the full moon. Hermione wiped the tears from her cheeks and allowed the girls to speak comforting words to her.

When it came time for dinner, Hermione convinced Alice and Lily she was not hungry. Hermione just lay in her bed thinking of how lonely she felt without Remus. She felt pathetic and helpless, he was the first person who had any real meaning in her life. Hermione’s thoughts were interrupted by the dormitory door opening.

“Hermione”. A familiar voice came from the door way. She looked up to see Remus standing there. “You weren’t at dinner, I thought I’d come check on you”.

Hermione sat up and looked out the window. She could hear his footsteps come closer, she felt the bed dip under his weight as he sat down next to her.

“I’m really sorry about what I said earlier. The full moon is coming and the wolf is very close to the surface, I don’t want to end our relationship”. Remus put in arm around Hermione and she leaned into him, hugging him tightly.

The embrace turned into a series of soft kisses, which turned into passionate, lingering kisses. Their tongues were intertwined, Remus’ hand was under Hermione’s shirt. Hermione had removed Remus’ shirt and had his trousers undone. Hermione’s shirt joined his own on the floor. Remus pushed her skirt up over her hips and removed her now soaking underwear. Hermione managed to get Remus’ pants and boxers to his knees. He was pounding into her, deeper and harder than he’d ever done before.

Hermione was biting her lip trying not to scream. She felt new waves of pleasure rush through her entire body. Her finger nails were leaving trails along his back, and her thighs were raw from his grip. Hermione came hard and Remus followed almost immediately. They just held each other for a few moments. The thought of losing each other was more than they could handle. Tears were on the brim of Hermione’s eyes once again.

Remus left shortly after their love making, Hermione dressed for bed and fell asleep instantly. She didn’t even hear Lily or Alice walk in.

The next morning at breakfast, Remus was not there. Sirius told Hermione he had not felt well at all that day, and he was spending the day in the hospital wing, until that evening.

Hermione walked to her first class of the day, only to be stopped by professor Dumbledore. He requested to see her in his office that evening after dinner. Hermione agreed. Hermione, deep down knew this was it, she knew she was going home. She even knew what it was that she had found. It was love, and her sacrifice was love as well.

Hermione skipped dinner and wrote Remus a long note explaining as much as she possibly could.

Dear Remus,
I know this is sudden, but I must leave. There are many things I wish I could have told you, but it’s better to keep it as this. I know for a fact we will meet again in the future, and you will then understand why things happened this way. I never meant for them to be like this, I’m sorry for how much I have hurt you, I have hurt myself as well. Please don’t wait for me, I hope you find happiness in your life.

Forever yours,
Hermione

Hermione left the letter on Remus’ bed and then headed towards Professor Dumbledore’s office. The stairs were already open to her, she climbed to the top and entered the office. The Professor was standing by his desk, facing her with a flask of potion.

“Are you ready Miss Granger”? Professor Dumbledore asked.
