Chapter 9: Naïve?

Tonks and Remus returned to Grimmauld place at dawn. Sirius welcomed them with breakfast. He was so bored being locked up in the old house that had hidden inside its walls some of Sirius’ darkest memories and worse childhood experiences. Not to mention the portrait of Mrs. Black that still yelled and shrieked at him. Even though she had been dead for years her horrible soul still haunted the house.

Tonks and Remus sat down to the pile of eggs and toast Sirius had generously made for them that morning.

“So, it looked like you guys actually did have a struggle. By the look of both of you it looks as if you’d taken on an army of death eaters”. Sirius stated completely oblivious to what actually occurred that evening.

Tonks looked down at her shirt and pants, she was dirty and had grass stains all over. She reached up to brush a hand through her hair and found she had tree leaves and all kinds of grime stuck in it. Remus didn’t look much better.

“Oh…we just had a few problems with neighborhood dogs, and pests. Nothing to worry about”. Remus lied. Tonks just smiled and nodded in agreement. “Well, I’m dead tired, rough night”. Remus said taking one last bite of his breakfast.

“Yes, me too”. Tonks said also. She had already devoured her breakfast. If there was one thing Tonks liked it was food, yet she always managed to keep a perfect shape.

Tonks began to stand up, Remus had already disappeared out of the kitchen. She was about to leave but Sirius stopped her.

“Tonks, are you shagging Remus”? Sirius asked with an amused look on his face.

“No”. Tonks answered a little too quickly. Sirius just glared through her lie. “I’m not, and I’m an adult, I don’t have to answer your questions. I can take care of myself”. Tonks answered stubbornly, she stomped out of the room and away from her too nosey of a cousin.

She entered her room and collapsed on the bed. ‘Thank Merlin, today is my day off’. She thought to herself. She slowly drifted into a deep sleep. She didn’t wake until later that evening when Remus knocked on her door.

It was 3 in the afternoon, Sirius was outside in the garden walking around. He wouldn’t be back for hours. Remus decided this was a good chance to talk to Tonks about what had happened between the two of them. He knocked on her door and there was no answer. He knocked three more times before he decided to just go in. The sight he saw made his heart melt. Tonks was curled up with her knees to her chest hugging her pillow, the blankets were in a mess around her and the long thick brown curls fanned out over her shoulder.

Remus moved closer not wanting to disturb her. She slept so peacefully, her chest was rising and falling with each deep breath she took. He sat on the edge of the bed and gently shook her shoulder.

“Hmph”. Was the only response Remus received. He gently shook her again.

“What”? Tonks asked in a sleepy annoyed voice.

“Nymphadora”. Remus said. This brought Tonks completely out of her sleep. She sat straight up.

“Remus, what are you doing”? She asked confused. “I don’t think I can handle another round. You’re pretty frisky for an old man”. She joked.

Remus gave her the stern Professor look. “That’s not why I’m here”. He answered.

“Oh”. Tonks blushed. “Sorry, but you really are you know. You’re the best shag I’ve….”

“Nymphadora”. Remus interrupted. “Can we talk about the shagging later”? He asked impatiently.

Tonks just mumbled something under her breath and rolled her eyes.

“What was that”? Remus asked.

“Nothing”. Tonks responded. “So, what did you want to talk about”?

“I wanted to talk to you about what happened in Surrey last night”. Remus began. “You are a sweet girl Nymphadora”.

“Oh Merlin, here it comes”. Tonks said rolling her eyes.

“Would you let me finish”? Remus asked stubbornly. Tonks rolled her eyes and again and let Remus continue. “You do realize I’m a werewolf. I can’t risk hurting you. You’re so young, you have so much a head of you”.

“Yeah, and I’m also a grown woman who can make decisions on her own. Stop trying to talk me out of it Remus. I have feelings for you”. Tonks was yelling. “Why can’t you for once accept the fact that another person on the face of this planet may be able to fall in love with you”?

“Because it’s not fair to you”. Remus was now yelling. “You don’t know what you want. You’re too young and naïve”.

Tonks was speechless. She was at a loss for words, she couldn’t remember the last time she’d been this mad. Tonks had the urge to start screaming, but all she could do was let the anger build. She turned and left the room running out the front door. She heard Remus yelling after her, but she couldn’t speak to him right now.

Tonks apparated to her flat in London, she had to go back to Grimmauld place that evening for an Order meeting, but she didn’t want to see Remus until she absolutely had to. Tonks cleaned up her flat and made herself lunch. She then decided to finish the nap she’d tried to take earlier. She woke up an hour before she had to be at the meeting, an owl perched on her window sill tapping at the window.

“Who could this be from”? She asked out loud, opening the door and allowing the bird to enter. She untied the parchment fastened around it’s leg and tossed it an owl treat. She then opened the letter:

Tonks,

Hey, I heard you took on a position with the Order. That’s great! I may be at the next meeting. I know this is weird getting a random letter like this, but it’s been a while. In case you are wondering, Romania is great, I enjoy working here. I hope everything is going well with you. I hope to hear from you, a visit wouldn’t hurt either. I hope to talk to you soon.

Charlie

Tonks mood lightened, she and Charlie Weasley had been such good friends. She never really got to see him now that he moved to Romania. Charlie was a few years older than herself, but she had met him through Bill during her time at Hogwarts. It was so hard saying good bye to him when he left. She promised herself she would write him after the meeting at the Order, and she also hoped he would be there this evening, at least she would have someone to talk to seeing that her and Remus weren’t exactly on talking terms.

Tonks shaved the letter into a drawer with the others he had sent her, then she apparated outside of the Grimmauld place. She stood between number thirteen and number eleven, then made her entrance as soon as the house appeared.

The living room was full of order members, but no sign of Remus or Charlie. Tonks took and empty seat on the couch next to Kingsley. She sat there until she noticed Charlie walking out of the kitchen.

“Charlie”. Tonks yelled running up to him and embracing him. Charlie practically picked Tonks up. He embraced her tightly. Neither of them saw Remus walk out of the kitchen.

“It’s so good to see you Tonks. I like the hair, it seems so….what’s the word, natural. A nice change from the pink”. Charlie stated.

Tonks gave him a playful smack on the arm. “Don’t start with the insults mister. I haven’t seen you for almost a month”.

“I know, I’ve been busy”. Charlie made up his excuse.

Tonks and Charlie talked until Albus appeared in the living room and the meeting began. Tonks and Charlie sat on the couch next to Kingsley. This was when Tonks finally noticed Remus. He refused to look at her. Tonks just shrugged it off. ‘And he calls me naïve’ she thought to herself.

The meeting went on for a while. Same old same old. Voldemort was up to this and the death eaters were doing their thing.

“Nymphadora, Remus, how did your evening go in Surrey last night” Albus asked.

“We had no problems sir”. Remus answered dryly for both of them not even looking at Tonks .

The meeting came to an end, everyone stuck around to drink and chat. Charlie and Tonks talked with Kingsley and other members of the order. Remus was silently talking to Sirius. After an hour or so people started to leave.

“Well, Tonks. It’s been great seeing you, but I have to work tomorrow”. Charlie stated. “I’ll try to make it to a few more meetings now that mating season has died down, the dragons get so snappy when they don’t have a mate”.

“Thanks for the warning”. Tonks joked. “I do hope to see you more often. Keep in touch”. Tonks gave Charlie one last hug good bye before he apparated. Leaving only Sirius, Remus, and herself.

“Well, this evening was productive”. Sirius stated walking into the living room and sitting on the couch. “Where were you all day Tonks”?

“Oh, I needed some things from my flat, so I decided to pop back there for a few”. Tonks lied.

“Oh, ok. Well, I’m off to bed. Good night”. Sirius walked upstairs leaving only Remus and Tonks in the living room together.

“Well, I suppose I should go to bed also”. Tonks stood to leave, but Remus grabbed her arm.

He swung her around to face him and crushed his lips down on hers. Tonks responded to the kiss immediately. Remus deepened the kiss and ran his tongue along her lips begging for entrance. They were in the middle of there snogging session when Remus broke it.

“What’s wrong”? Tonks asked.

“I just wanted to apologize for earlier”. Remus said.

“I thought that’s what you were doing”. Tonks answered with a mischievous grin.

“No, that’s what I’m ABOUT to do”. Before Tonks knew what he was talking about she was over his shoulder and on the way up the stairs.
